The Activision Exclusives Situation Gets Perplexing | Defining Duke Episode 58

The Dukes have spoken on multiple accounts about Xbox progress as a brand, but their communication leaves much to be desired. There has been no better public example than the back-and-forth statements on how Xbox plans to handle the games from their newly acquired publisher, Activision. From uncertainty, to delays of when the team will speak on such subjects, an "intent" to honor agreements, and now the latest statement which says that Call Of Duty will remain multiplatform. It leaves the Dukes asking what this means for future deals if Bethesda's acquisition was specifically for exclusives. Are some for Game Pass? Are others to keep Tencent and others away? It's tough to constantly read between the lines. In more digestible news, Scalebound is a potential return target, Halo Infinite is "dying," Nintendo is on another planet, and a man who listens to our show eats a whole onion for lunch. Early access to new episodes will go live every Thursday ad-free at 12:00 PM EST at http://www.Patreon.com/LastStandMedia . Episodes will be available publicly three days after. I'll believe it when I see it Phil Spencer is a snake oil salesman says some bullshit everyone wants to hear then turns around and does something totally different I don't think I've seen anyone in the game industry talk out the side of their mouth as much as Phil Spencer besides Peter molyneux

Even after all is said, I doubt new ip from any Activision/Blizzard studio will be on PlayStation unless it relies on a large player base.

It seems obvious to me that both Xbox and PlayStation are moving away from boxes and we'll see Game Pass and PlayStations offering on each other's machines and wherever else they can get them.

It is really tiresome watching microsoft try to have their cake and eat it too with the messaging for these deals. They aren't very gracefully walking the line between appeasing xbox only fans as well as the greater gaming community.

Onion story: I once walked into my best friends kitchen to see his dad leaning over the trash can with a whole yellow onion eating that mfer like an apple. With a shake of salt directly on the onion between bites. Never looked at that man the same.

Trent Miller

My dad said he tried that before but prefers it on bread with cheese.

Loved hearing the hockey talk. As a somewhat newer fan of The Columbus Blue Jackets. I played NHL 16 to learn the rules.

I don't get this Talking out of both sides of his mouth thing. People just aren't paying attention. Multiplayer/Live Service games are what they are talking about keeping and bringing to other platforms. New entries in Single player IP have been exclusive. People are just being purposefully dense because that's what they've been very clearly doing all along. COD was NEVER going to go exclusive because it made zero sense. It would kill the game.

Before Cog even said it I was thinking in my head Assassins Creed. I played a bit of origins and thought they turned a stealth game into a hack and slash. It started going downhill before that,(Unity was a pile of shit bug wise but enjoyed the game , Syndicate was very good) good) But those first three games were so much fun.

Will they get the Bungie treatment, or the treatment of the other studios that Sony bought? Well, all of those other studios were Sony second party studios first, so Sony already owned most of their IP. Only makes sense that what they produce will probably be exclusive. Bungie is the first one they've bought that wasn't just them consolidating their second parties and keeping them in the family. After all, this wasn't to be taken for granted since Ninja Theory was a former Sony second party studio and MS yoinked them. Several other Sony second parties have been slurped up by other publishers, like Ready at Dawn getting slurped by Oculus, The Chinese Room was slurped by Sumo, and Sumo was slurped by Tencent.

Great episode. I think people keep thinking to small about the Activision Blizzard deal this deal is bigger than just gaming. Activision was shopping themselves around it’s believed to be first to Meta second to Microsoft. No doubt third was Apple, Microsoft direct competitor. People keep forgetting Sony and Microsoft are not really competing with each other. I think this is why they don’t care about if COD is on PlayStation because that’s not Microsoft real sandbox.

MegaMan Battle Network was such a joy. Really sad Capcom is not doing anything with the IP at this time. Those games were incredible on Gameboy Advanced.
