Xbox Has Acquired Activision Blizzard | Defining Duke Episode 55

For the long time Defining Duke listeners, we all know you have been waiting for a week like this. A time where a major haymaker is delivered by Microsoft and we can break it all down together. For the staggering price of $68.7 billion, Xbox has acquired publisher Activision and with it come a slew of development teams and IP that we're not quite sure even they know what to do with. Beyond inheriting a plethora of potential exclusive games and bolstering Game Pass, Xbox takes in damaged goods. Activision is far from squeaky clean as they have suffered from toxic workplace conditions for years with a leader at the top willing to purchase two companies with game's media in an effort to steer the narrative away from such a truth. It's ugly and there's a lot of tendrils to this conversation. Games, exclusives, monopoly, mobile gaming, and so much more. It's time to talk about about the industry's most historic acquisition yet in what will be a series of many from the hungry competitor moving forward. Early access to new episodes will go live every Thursday ad-free at 12:00 PM EST at http://www.Patreon.com/LastStandMedia . Episodes will be available publicly three days after. TLOU will reign supreme forever in my heart

I think Colin and Matty need to get together and have a debate on all these mergers. I enjoy how coming tends to stand on the middle while matty tends to lean on what’s best for xbox

People really need to stop implying they're confident that this deal will pose antitrust issues...it's incredibly far away from being a monopoly and it only makes that person look ignorant.

It was a lawyer saying this I think he know more than the general consumer . It wasn’t just about taking over different companies it was more the verticals they are buying I.e the streaming sight the developers and publishers not just how many studios they own.

Mike

Lmao muddy hills!

I want to say, the synergy between you two was shining even more in this episode! I'm the kind of guy who really likes when we go in depth on a topic. I learned a great deal and I thought it covered every corner necessary. Adding the discussion on the acquisition from SS+ and this one on DD, you did justice to the greatest gaming news in history. We only need need a law discussion with a lawyer and we'll be in business!

I appreciate this more fair minded view on the deal because while I'm not a huge fan of big consolidation and everyone getting bought up. The premise that Microsoft is some evil company buying up everyone is just asinine. As well as the notion that they didn't do it some virtuous way because they bought companies with the IP already when Sony does the same thing. Their most touted studios in Insomniac and Naughty Dog were bought. The notion Microsoft is doing it some evil way is just disingenuous to me. The precedent this sets does make me iffy but those acting as though this is some egregious act when it hasn't even finalized is just laughable to me. Especially when Activision wanted to sell.

I need an empire earth reboot or a remaster of the first one or something now that xbox has sierra IP. My first/favorite RTS ever.

Mike

Is there a good video or podcast that dives into the revenue concerns from this? The payback on buying Bethesda was easy, this is not.

Matty 2 things: 1. Your DBZ hoodies have been awesome, I want to buy them lol 2. The Dukes take on the acquisition was the most nuanced and interesting I have listened to/read. Great idea waiting a few days to let news come out and provide a more informed opinion. Great work fellas!

Hey dukes I had a great idea for a defining duke ultimate! Having watched both this and sacred symbols + on this whole ordeal I noticed the dukes and the sacred symbols boys are on opposite sides, I would love to see a 2v2 debate on acquisitions in the video game industry

I could easily see an Xbox version of “The PlayStation collection” on Sony consoles. Maybe 12 Xbox games in a collection in similar fashion and you pay your $10 extra a month or whatever Xbox would want to charge apart of PlayStation plus and it’s done.

MrMattyPlays

Thank you! Btw, all DBZ gear was found at Boxlunch. One of my favorite sites to go to. Enjoy ;)

Wow, what a bunch of fanboys Matty and cog are, kind of fanboys Colin hates

Dave Carsley

The only people I hate are people who use the word "fanboy" unironically.

Caleb Greer

Great discussion! You guys put a lot of what I’ve been thinking into words

Cass Whelan

Two cans and a piece of string, im done hahaha

I’m confused about the narrative of how Xbox buys games instead of incubating them. Who cares so long as the games end up good? What average gamer cares about the cohesion of the first party? That is something journalists care about, but average gamers don’t or shouldn’t care so long as they enjoy the games.
