For the long time Defining Duke listeners, we all know you have been waiting for a week like this. A time where a major haymaker is delivered by Microsoft and we can break it all down together. For the staggering price of $68.7 billion, Xbox has acquired publisher Activision and with it come a slew of development teams and IP that we're not quite sure even they know what to do with. Beyond inheriting a plethora of potential exclusive games and bolstering Game Pass, Xbox takes in damaged goods. Activision is far from squeaky clean as they have suffered from toxic workplace conditions for years with a leader at the top willing to purchase two companies with game's media in an effort to steer the narrative away from such a truth. It's ugly and there's a lot of tendrils to this conversation. Games, exclusives, monopoly, mobile gaming, and so much more. It's time to talk about about the industry's most historic acquisition yet in what will be a series of many from the hungry competitor moving forward.

*Xbox has announced their intention to acquire Activision

Listening to the podcast nearly as upset as when one of Cogs game of the year was something he hadn’t ever played( only person on any podcast I have ever listened to do this lol ). But if you get days gone you get siphon filter remember they are in the same world .Still love you guys.

A comparison I’ve heard of Kevin Feige and Phil Spencer is actually one that resonates with me - similar questions were raised when Disney bought Fox, definitely consolidating the industry in a negative way but also bringing potential life to some mistreated IPs, and bringing increased value to consumers/fans. As many point out, this isn't a stagnant reality. It could change overnight, but currently I do share the same sentiment. I hope Phil can, with his team, aid in facilitating cultural changes at ABK. I do think quality will surge from ABK under new leadership, without being pigeonholed and forced to spit out a new COD game every single year, but contrastingly the consolidation of the industry is something that is admittedly uncomfortable. So, in more ways than one, the comparisons between Disney/MCU and Microsoft/ABK IPs seems apt in both its positives and negatives. The video game industry is a thriving one... new studios will sprout and amplify in the coming years. I'm not quite where others are at in terms of believing the third party will rapidly be depleted in some sort of Nintendo/Microsoft/Sony bidding war. Hopefully Xbox is done with acquiring (major) publishers, and instead looks to individual, smaller studios when/if they feel the urge for expansion in the future... the IOI or Crystal Dynamics of the world for example.. but I suppose only time will tell!

I was happy to see the drinkbox one go live first. Super informative on the game pass side of things. We frankly don’t know shit about the activision buy yet and it’s been all everyone’s been talking about. Way to Keep it fresh boys.

Big titty drinker

Subcription model services , call of duty frag head casual shooters, mobile games ? Billions spent and Microsoft has done nothing but push the industry toward areas I hate. Console war fun aside I'm rooting for them to fail. What they are trying to turn the industry into would be terrible for the types of games I like and type of gamer I am. Here's to hoping this blows up in thier face.

Sony fostering those relationships with those studios and putting our quality games for several years and then bringing them to the family..is SO DIFFERENT.. than Microsoft buying a ton of studios they’ve never fostered or interacted with except timed content. Im sorry that is not the same man.

Big titty drinker

Also yall wild for saying last of us 1 is better than 2. 2 legit is one of the greatest games ever created. There is basically no aspect it doesn't wipe the FLOOR with the 1st game outside of pacing. The swap conversation got yall boys tripping the only thing I would trade for ip wise is days gone for gears. All that other stuff like halo and the bethesda RPGs are extremely MEH.

Anonymous

I'm genuinely curious where Matty got the "Activision approached MS" angle from other than Jeff Grubb's recent article. Both Bloomberg and WSJ are reporting that Phil approached Bobby with concern about the whole situation AND to see if Activision would entertain a buyout.

Anonymous

Man shooters are one of my favorites genres. The best shooters (Cod4, Battlefield Bad Company 2, etc.) are easy 10s. Guess I'm just a frag head casual.

Garry

Look I usually really enjoy your show but for the people who can only afford one consuls you saying tuff go where the games are . I have bought both consoles because I can afford it but I feel for people who cant . And the rubbish you are talking about PlayStation and Nintendo they publish or finance games that would not be made without that support big difference to buying a publisher.

Anonymous

Gotta love the diversity of opinions on LSM. This podcast's perspective was very different from the SS+ pod on Tuesday, and it is great to see that can happen under the LSM umbrella. Overall though, some really smart analysis here that I didn't see elsewhere.

I'm going to be honest this particular deal compared to the bethsada one really bothers me. For one not much in the Activision catalog that excites me. Plus the cost worries me. That type of money for dead or declining ips and cod seems insane. I have a degree in economics and I calculated that it will take almost 20 years to make this money back from the gaming division

Anonymous

As much as I enjoyed Bethesda games, I would never choose them over any Sony IP, including Starfield. If I’m being honest, I wouldn’t buy any of the Xbox games over the PlayStation games the guys named if given a choice between the two. The only exception may be Jack and Daxter since that one didn’t resonate with me.

Wayde

It's not even a fair trade to talk about. Jax and Daxter has been dead for almost 20 years. Gears is still current. The better comparison would be gears for last of us. Most of the matchups they had were ludicrous. They intentionally put lesser games against the core xbox ips

Ben Scott

Great episode, Dukes! I enjoyed listening to your perspectives on the Acquivision. Is that a term we can get going?? Nah? Okay.

Walker Simmons

I'm hoping under Microsoft devs have more freedom to work on dead IP and to take more time rather than rushing out COD games even when they are clearly unfinished

TexasTaterSalad

Really enjoyed the episode! I will have too disagree on y’all’s take on exclusivity though. Cog said don’t go to Burger King and complain they don’t have a Big Mac, however I think it’s more like the Burger King bought the McDonalds right next to your house and said “but you can still get it at our location 15 miles away!”

Anonymous

I dislike this purchase because it is scary but hopefully new stuff comes from new studios

Operator 408

It's not the same thing. Had this conversation with them when Microsoft bought Bethesda, they just kept saying it was the same thing.

Fourth dimentional hypercube

Isn’t this going to make gamepass less profitable? Sure if they get a megaton of subscribers the money will come in. But it’s pushed that profit barrier further away from them. They amount of money required to pay for the devs and the games themselves as well as marketing it’s going to make gamepass a nonprofit service for a lot longer.

Stray_Bullets

I think TLOU1 has more slightly resonance with me personally, if only for being the first one. However, I agree with you on TLOU2 really just going above and beyond and exceeding expectations when the bar was already set so high. It’s the better game objectively. TLOU2 had much more emotional impact on me. I appreciate when the medium and these massive high production games don’t just give us exactly what we want: What would be “easy” or obvious; more of the same (a same that is high quality no doubt). I like when the player is challenged more in an internal way, emotionally or mentally. TLOU2 was a lesson in empathy for me. I think the emotions the characters would actually be experiencing in that scenario were transferred to me as the player. If you embrace that, then it all makes sense. It was by design. That sort of stuff goes a little over peoples heads, which is understandable and that’s fine. It’s all how you are approaching the medium. If you want the same action, the familiar characters you loved, similar beats, and generally the same kind of narrative experience that is easily digestible, then a game like TLOU2 could be a harder sell.

Wayde

If every one of their 25 million subscribers pays full price which we all know they don't and are around for an entire year they make 4.5 billion a year. Assuming 0 cost which I know that that's bullshit. It would take the current subscribers base 16 years to pay off what they paid for activation. As an economist I've done some calculations and I have come to the conclusion that unless something changes dramatically it's gonna take them roughly 2 decades with growth levels at an expected rate of 15% a year to become profitable. That's massively longer than companies like Amazon or Netflix took to make a profit.

Kickstand

Not on social media but want to let you guys know I listen to all the eps in full. Great show keep it up gents.

NuclearProstate

It's kinda dumb because I'm a PlayStation player because I prefer all the Xbox exclusives to the Sony stuff 😂

Craig Mcguire

My hope is main COD goes bi-yearly and warzone becomes the annual big thing to keep players consistantly engaged. Keep the 3 core teams and high noon on full support, either seperate Raven or let them also create a new team for new projects. TFB, Beenox and if they bring back VV proper get them back making the games they want to make.

Raymond Stuart

My daughter has been waiting on Pupperazzi for months since it was announced at last years ID@Xbox showcase

Will Hernandez

I would like to see another super episode with Colin, Matty, and Cog because I think there’s a bit of an echo chamber on both sides about what this acquisition means for Microsoft, Sony, and the gaming industry in general.

Robert Schultz

Can’t believe half the episode was about what studio Xbox should buy next. We’re still waiting for most of the studios they bought 5 years ago to put out a game…

Kaz Redclaw

From the Playstation side on Swap/Stop. Gears/Jak... swap it, but I actually don't care about either that much, but Gears is probably a stronger franchise. I wouldn't trade TLoU for Gears though. Halo/God of War, Stop it. Halo's largely gone cold to me, but God of War has been consistently good. Starfield/Horizon, Stop it, Horizon was in my top 5 games in the last decade. I'll probably play Starfield, but I'm probably going to just play it on my Xbox One S. State of Decay/Days Gone, Stop it, Days gone was in my top 10 for the last decade. I can't stand permadeath games, and I don't care so much for walking dead. I might trade State of Decay for Jak and Daxter though. Elder Scrolls/Last Of Us, Swap it. TLoU was a great game, but the end of the game that ended up being the sequel hook drove me insane, and because it was the sequel hook I didn't even play it. Elder Scrolls is a buggy mess, but I had more enjoyment out of the series and it annoyed me less. I'm more of an RPG player anyway. Fallout/Uncharted: Ugh. Stop it, but I would love either one. Fallout's been getting worse, Uncharted's stayed pretty solid even through to Lost Legacy. If given the option, I'd trade TLoU for Fallout instead of TES. Fable/Spiderman: Stop it. Spiderman was so good, and insomniac is insanely good all around, MS's greatest mistake was not giving Insomniac more time for sunset overdrive. Redfall/Sly Cooper. Stop it, even though the 4th sly cooper was kind of trash... It's such a good series aside from that. I liked redfall's trailer, but I don't know enough about it.

Kaz Redclaw

For me, Activision is more avoidable than Bethesda. Bethesda took a lot of games I considered very important. Activision? About 8 games in my library, mostly purchased on discount. A few games I stopped playing ages ago. Honestly, Double Fine had more impact for me than Activision. Obsidian had more impact. Ninja Theory was about the same level of impact. Activision's primary stuff I would have been interested in that they own is all the Dead IP that you're mentioning. The Sierra stuff, the Dynamix stuff, the Infocom stuff, The Toys for Bob stuff, the Universal stuff... etc. I'd already sworn off Activision's new games after their Hong Kong controversy.

MeatSpin11

Wow, I know there’s a hardcore Sony tilt in the LSM fan base because of Colin, but there is some serious salt. I enjoyed Cog and Matty’s take on this.

Tonys_Always_Write

At one point Matty, you commented on how Microsoft lockdown redfall and elder scrolls as console exclusives. This just isn't true... They are game pass exclusives. Both Xbox fans and Sony fans need to realize, that Game Pass is "the console" going forward. It is the same mentality that people need to read feels comments on, "our desire to keep call of duty on PlayStation." They definitely desire it, because they desire game pass on PlayStation.

Tonys_Always_Write

Also Matty, maybe you are right... But you are the only person I have hear pronounce Bobby's name that way. 😂 Everyone else says "K-oh-tick"

Ryan

#ActivisionDD Great show guys. Helped get me through the first half of my day. Keep it up boys

Homz

haha so much, i need a drink of water.

Big titty drinker

Eh in terms of what I play I dont really care. But the overall consolidation is terrible for games

Klutch

Are you guys that only play on Xbox worried about the tit for tat? Selfishly, I don't play cod and worry this will raise gamepass prices for something I don't play anyways. I would also worry about Sony taking a Japanese 3rd party as a response. Seems like a dangerous game for everyone.

Tonys_Always_Write

Yes/No. 1. Sony is not even capable of making a purchase the size. 2. I've seen a lot of "Microsoft started something bad here" sentiments... I'm not going to jump up and down over market consolidation, but Microsoft didn't start this. They are reactionaries to markets. The name of the game across all industries is increasingly consolidation. Microsoft is looking at people like Amazon... What if Activision went to Microsoft, and Microsoft said no? What if Activision or Google didn't? What a Facebook didn't? This does affect PlayStation... I've been telling people for a couple years now, Microsoft is not concerned about Sony. They are concerned about the other trillion dollar companies. 3. If Sony snatches up square enix or something does that suck? Yes.... But all of their Japanese games have primarily been exclusively anyways.

Zack Fair

Well you Xbox fans, I hope you're happy with Xbox new purchase as Gamepass subscription price will be going up eventually

Dave Carsley

Gamepass prices WILL go up. Microsoft has a ton of money, sure. But they can't just keep buying massive publishers for billions of dollars, paying them to make games, and releasing them basically for free (I know it's not "free", but it's close enough). They can't do that forever. It's not sustainable. And this is especially true if they refuse to allow owners of the most successful current gen console to give them $70 a pop for these games. Investors want a return on their $70B investment, and they're not going to get it at $9.99 per month.

Kaleb

I feel like everyone is ignoring that Bloomberg reported that Microsoft was already Interested in Activision back in 2020 AND that Microsoft was not the first company Activision approached. This whole idea that Activision came to Microsoft and the rest was history is just a complete whitewashing to make everything look clean.

Ian Everett Trout

Great episode guys! But remember that Microsoft hasn't done the acquiring ... yet. Also, I'm LOVING Rainbow Six Extraction! Would never have played it were it not for Game Pass.

Anonymous

It's not dirty either way. They don't need to whitewash anything.

FluffyNeko

Finally more people of reason. I felt like a madman because all i saw was journalists and youtubers giving praises about the acquisition and saying "well some people might see it as a bad thing" and then brush it aside and then see people say "next is Sega". I hope Sony doesn't do anything drastic.

FluffyNeko

A scary thought popped into my head. What if this acquisition will kick start these other companies like Google, Apple, Amazon and Tencent to start buying up as much as they can because it's big news, big money, and Microsoft keeps buying big companies.

lazer_josh

Lmaooooo Bobby cockdick

Ladder Ape

Guys you can't trade Fable for anything, please. Thanks that's all.

larry Seitz

During stop and swap part of the show has me really questioning all yalls gaming credentials. I need the south meme dumb dumb dumb

Zack Fair

Wasn't all you Xbox fans moaning about prices going up a while back

Tonys_Always_Write

@Dave Carsley What many people fail to realize is the subscription is not intended to be a point of profit. It's a revenue source sure, but the profit comes from the transactions made inside the games, or from people deciding to purchase the game after playing. "Game Pass" is the the console, and just like manufacturers subsidize the costs of hardware to get people to buy software. Microsoft / Xbox will always do what they can to keep the prices low as possible. Will prices go up? Yes. All prices go up. Are we going to wake up tomorrow to an announcement of a $5 price hike? No.

NeO JD

Was gonna say the same thing. Just wild choices.
