The Lame Awards | Sacred Symbols: A PlayStation Podcast Episode 180

Have the Game Awards officially lost their charm? For as likable as Geoff Keighley is, this year's offering was a gratuitously advertisorial affair, and we simply have to call it like it is. What's the purpose of holding an audience captive for three hours, only to bombard them with commercial after commercial... other than bean-counting, of course? Still, through it all, it was still cool to see Quantic Dream's Star Wars: Eclipse, hear about Monolith's Wonder Woman game, get an official reveal of Alan Wake II, receive a release date for PS5 console-exclusive Forspoken, and more. Plus, there's everything else we need to talk about unrelated to the gala. Uncharted 4 and Lost Legacy finally have a release date on PS5, but buying them may be a more complicated situation than you may have anticipated, while a new Bill has been cast in HBO's The Last of Us, and it may not be who you expect. Plus: Ubisoft launches an NFT program, GTA Online gets story DLC, Activision-Blizzard continues to play with fire, and more. Then: Listener questions, ranging on issues like the use of social media in the industry, the advantages and disadvantages of using fake languages in fiction, the endless potential of a LEGO PlayStation game, and the fact that Chris accidentally outed Santa as being fake to a listener's kid. C'est la vie. Get some Sacred Symbols merch! https://LastStandMedia.shop Follow the hosts on Twitter! I love when you can tell it’s gonna be a banger at the 3 minute mark

Anonymous

The 4+ hour episodes are always a banger. Can’t wait to listen

Rob Aitken

Just want to say - person or persons working on the time stamps, and editing it into youtube, especially on a long show like this - you are appreciated!!

Jackie Rheu

Best time of the week!

Josh Jelen

Well said in regards to all the issues with this year's game awards. It felt really off and super cringe.

Angel Of The Past

To put it super bluntly. I watch the game awards 90% for the game awards. So the fact that they treat the awards as some kind of shitty show to the announcements is ridiculous. The fact that they only get 30 seconds per award, and out of the 30 awards only 10 get any kind of air time is insulting. I liked a lot of the games shown, a lot more than you all did at least, and I actually think I was pretty excited for the games coming, so I disagree with you all on that. So kudos to all the games shown, but as far as the "game awards" as a whole, absolute disgrace. Edit: My girlfriend wanted me to add that they did the "fuck the Oscar guy" a huge injustice. He deserved to be the host.

Ughh 😂 I can’t breath my stomach is hurting from uncontrollable laughter just from the beginning. The beanie talk was pure comedy.

I fucking love Glassjaw

I agree with your disdain for the video game awards. It was so underwhelming and as heavy. Great review of the show and I’m very excited to hear about your thoughts in full next week. That arc raiders game is from Patrick Sodurland who was at EA for a long time.

Cristian R

I think that Wonder Woman game makes a lot of sense for Monolith coming off of the Lord of the Rings games. Wonder Woman’s weapons lean towards a similar sword based gameplay and the Nemesis system would make sense if the game involves some sort of War mechanic involving the Amazons.

NickBLeaveIt

I mean I would say Thirsty Suitors looked different and original.

Kaleb

I hate to be negative but Colin you speak on the selection of games at the awards but based off what you talk about on the podcast it seems you didn't even play the majority of those nominated. Whether it be those nominated for goty, rpg, indie, action adventure, narrative, multiplayer etc. By all means be critical on the show and on Geoff but at least TRY to play the games before calling their selection sterile.

LastStandMedia

I don't dwell in the AAA space as much as the mainstream industry. That's how it goes. Just because a game is on that list doesn't make it more worthy than the many games I've played this year, many more -- in almost certainly all cases -- than most of those who voted on that list to begin with.

Kaleb

But you're complaining about games you haven't played. That's my issue.

LastStandMedia

It's not so much disdain as much as it's poor, capitalistically-gratuitous execution. A two hour show doesn't need to be three hours so you can sell lots and lots and lots of ads.

LastStandMedia

Well, Geoff is the host because it's his show. I wonder if he'd ever relinquish that role and simply produce?

Nick offerman in the tv show devs was one of the best performance I have ever seen.

Fourth dimentional hypercube

Super excited for Space Marine 2 tbh. one of my fave games on ps3. really felt great to play that one. Hopefully the sequel keeps/evolves the feel of the first one.

Nobody gonna mention they have headphones over their hats which cover their ears... what?

Andrew Gambill

What patreon tier do I need to subscribe to to get Colin to interview a furry and ask them all of his burning questions?

Kaz Redclaw

I don't think the problem with digital is "what if Sony disappears" but "what if Sony decides that it's no longer profitable to keep the clock servers and download servers for (insert system here) and takes them down?" It's happened before with Sony and the PS Mobile store, the DSi eshop, the Wii eshop, and also with numerous online servers for individual games. I imagine the ultimate answer will be "Hobbyists will hack the systems and make third party servers for them where everything is free."

LastStandMedia

I just don't see that becoming a reality. Even if Sony wanes, the PlayStation brand will live on.

Joseph Baker

I loved that Chris opened that package on the show. I'd love to buy one of those. Hell, shape it into a Dr. Wily logo and I'll hang it in my living room.

Liam Mcnulty

Really bad games show and underwhelming reveals. I found the virtue signalling hilarious, especially with all the CCP shilling lol.

Jakejames Lugo

I have many thoughts about the show, especially a few key points during it. Overall I still enjoyed seeing the new trailers tho.
