BioWhere? | Sacred Symbols: A PlayStation Podcast Episode 178

What happened to Electronic Arts-owned studio BioWare? Once the crown jewel of EA's family of devs, BioWare has experienced nearly a decade of consistent struggle, and now it's been hit with yet another punch: The loss of Dragon Age's Creative Director, seemingly on not-great terms, injuring a game that's already been in development for some six years. Needless to say, BioWare is a shadow of its former self with no true identity, begging the question: Is it even worth saving at all? Plus: Other news! Chrono Cross Remastered is apparently on the verge of being announced, while Sony is the newest company to be sued by its own employees, this time a female accusing the corporation of gender bias. Meanwhile, some dedicated and talented fans are in the midst of salvaging the online functionality of some of PlayStation 3's most important exclusives, while Hideo Kojima is finally getting into the movie industry, though we're unsure if that's where he belongs. After all of this (and more), we get into some listener inquiries to wrap things up. What in God's name is going on with Battlefield 2042? Are there rules that determine who's included in the credits of video games? Is scalping consoles really a worthwhile financial endeavor? Should Colin, Chris, and Dustin name their new child Drilin or Crustin (or both)? Get some Sacred Symbols merch! https://LastStandMedia.shop Follow the hosts on Twitter! Chris

BioWare honestly was killed off when the mass exodus began following the launch of Mass Effect 3. I like the ship of Theseus comparison. They were pretty much a totally different company by 2016. If only a publisher like Sony bought them instead of EA

Sorry to hear about your twin brother, Andy. My thoughts are with you and your family. I know how hard it is to have a family member stolen from you like that, so you have my sincere condolences. You don't know me but if I you see this and want to talk then I'll happily talk to you if you want.

I am making the next BioShock game in my basement. I am here to confirm it is a 2D open world anime dancing game in the style of Persona 3 Dancing in Moonlight.

Eebo85

This. I was just listening to the episode and thought the same

I love Chris' flopover hair in this!

People playing WipEout HD on PS3 aren't playing the Omega Collection on PS4. People busy with Warhawk aren't gonna be playing Deviation's game. People playing Killzone 2 might not care for Guerilla's next game. People crunch boosting Freedom Wars right now can't be playing Ghost of Tsushima: Legends. Doesn't hurt Sony my dick. Too much competition, but keep telling me Firewalk's game isn't competing with Factions 2. What is it you keep saying about opportunity cost?

LastStandMedia

The enthusiasts playing these old games aren't going to play those new games in any great number. There is no opportunity cost.

Great episode! I am genuinely curious about where you heard Wheel of Time was getting a bad reception though. You’d be hard-pressed to find bigger lovers of the book series than my family and I, and we all love it and think it looks pretty great, with maybe some iffy shots here and there. Getting good reviews as well from what I’ve seen from major outlets. Also, terrible to hear what Andy’s family is going through. Hoping he can continue to find joy in the podcast.

CrayGunstilin , you're welcome.

Can "Doing space stuff!" be a new merch line please? 🙏

I’m wondering if why we’re seeing more physical purchases on PS5 and Switch is due to the systems’ native storage solutions and in how they’re fairly limited in space, or with Sony’s console, the initial inability to upgrade the storage capacity.

LastStandMedia

Possibly, but the PS5 technically has more space than the PS4, when you consider the truncation in game size.

Kid-Organic

That may be true, but does Joe Public know this?

As a longtime bioware/mass effect fan to the point that I have mass effect tattoos (and plan to get more), I'm so disappointed with the state of bioware after that legendary trilogy. With all the people that have left, theres no way they can capture the magic of either sequels they're making and honestly I'd rather they just put both series' out to pasture rather than gruesomely killing them in front of us like andromeda leads me to believe. Even more unfortunate is that, I doubt they can get the support for a new IP, so as I see it, their choices are tarnish their reputation further with more soulless sequels or die a slow death by the hands of EA. It's real grim over here as a bioware fan smh

The Great Santini

I feel for BioWare… They seem to be a shell of what they once were and it can only be true that EA should take a large chunk of the blame. That said, it looks like ruining BioWare isn’t enough for EA. No, it seems like they’re intent on destroying one of their flagship studios (that’s been with them since 2005 IIRC): DICE. DICE was an absolutely beloved FPS studio and while they’ve always had rocky launches, the DNA of a great game was there. In recent years, we’ve seen key pieces of the DICE team leave at both leadership levels and below. We’ve seen disasters like the Battlefront 2 launch, the marketing disaster that was the Battlefield V launch, and now the disastrous launch of Battlefield 2042. 2042 is completely lacking when it comes to identity and it fails to maintain the parts that were done right in their most recent titles. One can only chalk this up to an utter lack of leadership and a lack of understanding of what makes a great Battlefield game. As a lifelong Battlefield fan (since playing 1942 on my parents’ PC back in the day), EA’s handling of DICE pisses me off to no end.

I was intrigued with Far Cry 6 but you’ve sold me on it, Colin. Loved 3, wasn’t a big fan of 4 and never played 5.

As for the reselling of PS5's, its not as annoying as it's been made out to be from that question. Many people sell them in person off FB marketplaces, craiglist, etc. Basically a PS5 costs about $500 and can easily be resold within a day at $750-$800... So thats an extremely low effort sale with no additional expenses, taxes, etc

Gotta say, the titles of the episodes each and every week are always on point!
