Xbox's 20th anniversary was one to remember! After a lot of damage done to Halo by 343, they made a positive imprint on the franchise with one of its most memorable moments. The multiplayer component is available now and despite the worrying Battle Pass, the game is great. Joining us is Rand Al Thor to discuss that on top of new backwards compatible additions to the library. Matty brought his candle to commemorate those that sadly did not make the cut. Additionally, Phil Spencer voices his thoughts on pressing topics such as the sustainability of Xbox Game Pass and the exclusivity in Elder Scrolls VI! Some shocking and some not so much...

The biggest issue with the game awards unlike other awards like the BAFTAs the jury’s don’t need to play the games in the nomination pools . So you have voters who have only played have the games. I’am not saying it’s right or wrong it that’s the way they do it.

Tonys_Always_Write

I think it could be interesting to have a staggered nomination process in which only games nominated for other applicable awards were up for game of the year or something like that, and then use ranked-choice voting to determine the winner.

I think you guys answered your own question about why forza wasn't nominated. You all said you dropped it or playing less of it the moment halo dropped. Sure it reviewed well but will it be talked about even a few months from now? And the elder scrolls thing is really Microsofts fault. They've been very play anywhere happy and other things making everyone question how they would handle legacy games from them and if they would go to ps5 or not and trying to be everyone's friend and not piss off the biggest console player base by taking away beloved games. Where Sony upfront would've been like yes these are now gonna be playstation exclusive sorry not sorry

Cog calling the game awards “our version of the oscars” is exactly what is wrong with the game awards, both have extremely high genre bias. And gaming is, for some inane reason, again trying to imitate the movie industry to “prove itself” as an art form. So a racing game would never be win or even be nominated, just like a horror or action movie in the oscars.

The way the nomination process is described doesn't give this impressions at all. Its done through ballots collected from "an international jury of over 100 global media and influencer outlets" and each ballot is completed through a vote within each outlet. What this means is if everyone is giving their top 6 games of the year, or just their top game of the year, then not enough of them enjoyed Forza to that degree. There's no sense that because the game is good and people who are fans of that genre think it's one of the best games of the year that others should have to vote for it. Choosing the best games of the year is entirely subjective and the perfect example of that is Colin's current game of the year is Outriders, a game with no nominations. The only way to satisfy everyone is if the amount of nominees for the game of the year award becomes flexible like the Oscars where there can be up to 10.

Just thought I’d let y’all know Call of duty has been doing these free to play weekends ever since modern warfare 2019, it may have been after the warzone release but I’m not sure. It is a good way to try the game and see if you’d be interested in buying it but i’m pretty sure they have outright said on multiple occasions it’s main reason for being is so people who only have warzone can play the multiplayer and grind gun levels much faster than in warzone. It makes sense they would do this now as well because the new warzone map and vanguard integration are supposed to release soon.

Matty going off on the critics who judge the game awards was great to listen to. Brutally honest but very necessary. Preach king

Rands comment on Forza not fitting the mold of the games that get nominated for GOTY doesn't even make sense when games like Animal Crossing, Mario Maker, PUGB, Hearthstone, Hades and many other non emotional, story focused, games have been nominated. The take on these outlets being in their own bubble and being unimportant outside of it is ridiculous. If these people on the jury are apparently not fit to vote then who is? Why do these people have to be held to the unrealistic standard of playing and enjoy every genre to have their nominations taken seriously? If anyone on this podcast were to be on the jury, they'd just as well have their own biases. If the nominations have to be representative of the masses then they'd be filled with very safe popular games. But it doesn't represent the masses it represents the people who play and review games for a living and that goes for every award show decided by critics. The D.I.C.E. awards are decided by Developers and 4 out of the 7 years of the TGA's have had the same winner. Most of the anger from the nominations is coming specifically from fans of the games that didn't get nominated and it's pretty obvious by looking at the 7/1 like/dislike ratio that the majority of people ARE satisfied with these nominations even though they exclude very popular games like Returnal and Forza yet include more niche games like Psychonauts 2 and It Takes 2.
