A Little Inspiration | Sacred Symbols+ Episode 113

Many of you miss Fireside Chats, Last Stand's original podcast that ran from 2017 until 2019. Within, I interviewed all sorts of people from all walks of life, and while I still chat with folks about games, I wanted to make an exception today and expand the net a little. Welcome popular YouTuber Finn Mckenty -- also known as The Punk Rock MBA -- to the show. Finn's specialties are music and business, but today, we discuss being an online creator. Beginning with fanzines and even applying to GameFan in the '90s, Finn found his way to YouTube stardom and financial success because of hard work, determination, and a willingness to do what's necessary to break through. For those who want to know what it's like to go out on your own and chase your dream, whether in or outside of games, we hope this different kind of episode resonates with you.

Wow, great episode LSM! Finn is exceptionally well spoken, was a joy getting his perspective on content creation and the journey. The section on working for others vs working for yourself hits home for me. I have worked in the games/tech space for 6 years now myself, and the last 2 years I've been at my own startup ventures with a business partner and I wouldn't trade betting on myself and my ideas for the world after spending a long time working in traditional structures worried about stability every quarter. When you specifically mentioned working for an immediate contract rather than a long term goals under IGN, that is the case for so many I think and I experienced that hustle myself. Now, obviously a different dynamic in a lot of aspects because of answering to investors -- but it's a world of difference and where I feel most comfortable vs my old corporate path. The stress of bringing your own ideas to reality is much more welcome than the stress of killing yourself for others in a machine that doesn't care for you. There is a freedom there. Really loved this talk, Colin and friends. My only complaint -- I wish it was longer! Thanks guys, much love.

I'm not done but man, I'm really appreciating the conversation, especially as someone who has been applying to video production jobs for 5 months now after graduating, and getting ghosted after every interview, and being asked for ridiculous things, I am already done with the corporate world. I'm so sick of it and I haven't even started. I just need to start any job to become independent and have money coming in so I can then start fueling a proper self-employed career.

This episode is great! I've started a new job this year but have been feeling really discouraged by the pay for the amount of work I'm doing. I've always wanted to create something of my own, either doing freelance or starting my own agency. This episode was very insightful and really lit a fire under my ass.

I am but one man, but I can confirm that I am a conservative metal head. You’re welcome 🤓

Incredible episode, so happy to see fireside style content again. When Colin has his curiosity engaged, he has such an energy to him, and few things bring that out of him like a fireside chat. Glad to see Dustin there too!

Save your money, live lean, come up with a plan, start doing something on the side, then... =)

I'm really lucky I never had to go through the 'looking for a job' thing. Which is kinda weird, but true.

What a brilliant episode. I've been watching Finn for around a year now so to see you together and to get along so well was great. Fingers crossed he does come back on again. Also cannot wait for the Filip Miucin episode

Kevin Metzger

Definitely need to have Finn on again.

Wayne Moss

A very enjoyable episode 👍🏻 you guys keep delivering bangers every week.

That you are going to interview Filip is incredible. The audience needs to hear these stories if the subjects are willing to tell them. Solidifying the fact that you have the best content in the games industry!

2021-09-09 13:46:36 Another great pod cast & conversation. Anyone finding it ironic that all the gaming influencers that brought up about supporting Palestine aren't saying a single word about the shit going down in Afghanistan or doing fundraising streams for Red Cross support etc to help the people in the country?
