Top Gun | KnockBack: The Retro and Nostalgia Podcast Episode 182

Some people have the need for speed. Among them are the US Navy fighter pilots as portrayed in the 1986 Jerry Bruckheimer-led smash-hit Top Gun. The film stars a young Tom Cruise as Maverick, an ace pilot with a mysterious past and his own way of doing things. But really, this flick is a visual feast for the eyes if you're into fighter jets, dogfighting, and more. Is it corny and campy? Absolutely. Does it hold up today? Well, we'll leave that up to you. And yes, we'll even get into the theories about what the movie really means... although we're not so sure we agree. One of the dumbest movies I have ever seen. Can’t wait to see what you two esteemed gentlemen have to say about it.

DANGER ZONE!!!!

Call signs are assigned by senior instructors during flight school and some times changed by squadron commanders later. My cousin, who flew Hornets than transitioned to Poseidon's was running late for inspection after a full day of flight training in the Florida sun. You can imagine he was quite ripe. 20 seconds of standing next to the squadron CO "you smell Funky!" and there it was, even after 20 years with the Fleet, a Captain, with the call sign Funky. Even better during the First Gulf War, his wingman kept falling asleep on missions as the ship had run out of go pills. His snoring came through loud and clear on the squadron comm channel. The CAG had a new helmet painted up with the Dwarf Sleepy ready for when they trapped

My callsign would be Voodoo (I’m from Louisiana).

Timothy Martin

Haha! I just spent some time in San Diego and had lunch at the “you lost that loving feeling” bar.

A buddy of mine is an air force fighter pilot and has the call sign “quake”. Never played the game, tho. What a loss.

Holy shit I was right about Treble! https://twitter.com/FFoP_Jason/status/1420487479598084100?s=19

Never thought about how iceman was actually the better/more responsible pilot. We’re sort of shoe horned into accepting maverick as the protagonist. But I wouldn’t want to be his wingman. Excited to re-examine the film through this lens. Obligatory danger zone!

When I lived in NY my roommate was a Drag Queen and even with that, the volleyball scene in Top Gun is among the “Gayest” things I’ve ever seen.

I know I'm late to the discussion, but there's a great documentary about the making of Top Gun in which Kenny Loggins says he wrote "Playing with the boys" because when he was in the room with a hundred other song writers watching the movie, he figured no one else would try to write a song for that scene.

The Top Gun 2 game was probably the biggest licensed game that bit me with its subpar nature in the 80's, I tried and tried to get into that game but just couldn't.

Another Top episode Top Gun is defo one of my fan favourite movies along with Rocky. Can’t wait for Top Gun 2 I hope they don’t spoil the franchise by delivering a bad movie.
