Some people have the need for speed. Among them are the US Navy fighter pilots as portrayed in the 1986 Jerry Bruckheimer-led smash-hit Top Gun. The film stars a young Tom Cruise as Maverick, an ace pilot with a mysterious past and his own way of doing things. But really, this flick is a visual feast for the eyes if you're into fighter jets, dogfighting, and more. Is it corny and campy? Absolutely. Does it hold up today? Well, we'll leave that up to you. And yes, we'll even get into the theories about what the movie really means... although we're not so sure we agree.

My dad was in the military for 20 years. He was never a "Navy man" per say and he laments how his career ended; he's fighting even today for all of his medical benefits after his body started breaking down towards the end of his service. However, him showing me this movie has always made me feel so connected to his world. It's a little silly, but I feel almost apart of something I was only ever near while watching and remembering this movie. I always wanted to be a pilot but never went for it. Now my dad and I not so patiently wait for the sequel. Can't wait to listen to this one.

Congrats on the new puppy Colin. I’ve been debating getting another Springer Spaniel puppy. I have one that’s almost one year old and I want to get her a sister but it’s so much work haha!

I flew in the Air Force, and my call sign was "Cluba," as in Club a seal. I also got called Baby, or baby seal. Also, Colin is right, you have to get a call sign from another flyer.

There’s actually an entire Squadron called the “sundowners”. VF-111. In Vietnam they had massive rising suns emblazoned on their tails. Pretty balsy to put a former enemies symbol on their tail.

Love val Kilmer Top gun was a quintessential 80s movie. I would argue his best movie in this era was willow and I will die on that hill

Loved how Colin used "the need for speed" in the latest SS ep with Hoeg.
