Call-In With Colin II | Sacred Symbols+ Episode 104

It's time to return to the phones! Well, Discord! As I did back in early June, I (Colin) sat down in front of the mic to take your questions, comments, concerns, thoughts, and ideas, live on the air with no notes and no preparation. Not surprisingly, the conversations are wide-ranging. What do I think of the debate around 'game difficulty' in the industry? What happened between Giant Bomb and Nextlander? Could Microsoft's acquisitions strategy backfire? Is there a bad game that still has exemplary mechanics? What's the deal with this Nickelodeon brawler? We touch on all of those topics and others. So hit play!

Jesus Christ. I haven't even started this week's Sacred Symbols. I have such little free time ATM and all the content keeps piling up. Looking forward to having a gaming podcast/Mass Effect binge day soon.

It really irks me this community gets shit on all the time, this was a great show good job everybody:)

Rob Aitken

Firstly, Dustin - I don't know if you get enough credit but you riding shotgun adjusting inputs on the fly as each user connects. To quote Red Letter Media "You may have missed it but your ears didn't" Well done sir Secondly - Need to integrate my discord to this, are you also accepting video feed as well? I can understand if not, out of fear of people video streaming weird stuff that you have to go back and cut out, just curious.

John Pliskin

Your take on gamepass and xbox is horrendously incorrect. Every Xbox that is made is sold. At this point its about supply as the demand is there. Sony started manufacturing the PS5 ahead of the Xbox consoles. This is a known quantity yet you continue to misrepresent the sales discrepancy as one of interest.

LastStandMedia

Maybe we can do video, but I feel like that's an unnecessarily complicated issue for what we're trying to accomplish.

John Pliskin

How can you say that when the number of Gamepass subs have been increasing rapidly over the past year or so, when Xbox consoles are currently sold out everywhere , where the xbox has shown to be ahead in June on the NPD. Truth of the matter is the data does NOT support your notion that the Xbox brand isnt alive and VERY healthy.

Max Davis

Just wanted to say love the team. Haven’t been able to listen a ton lately but when I do I always get a smile

Matt Wiles

Just 15 mins in and this is fucking brilliant. You’ve hit the jackpot here with this idea.

I appreciate that you guys actually have a short conversation with each caller vs just dropping them after they answer their questions and being patient with them as some were obviously less than comfortable at the start. You could tell that people got a lot more comfortable when they realized you guys talked to them like actual people. gg guys. Great show.

I love these call-in shows, I wish I wasn't busy during the times when you do the calls. Hope you do more!

Braden Summers

Can't help but think of W. Bush whenever I hear the "Fool me once etc" quote

Martin Donelan

Colin, on the subject of “Cooking RPG” check out a game called Battle Chef Brigade - ticks a few of the boxes. Keep up the great work lads!

Brandon Soto

Sakuna: Of Rice & Ruin is a cooking RPG, and it looks pretty cool. Also has side-scrolling elements in it.

Dom posa

Instant classic

Mason M

I always get secondhand stress on these types of live shows lol you guys do great job though

I think that was a very wise statement about casual players don't study the industry and the moment the start they are no longer causal players

Walker Simmons

That rant about critics and game difficulty was legendary. So glad you spoke about that topic it's been driving me crazy

Matthew Cooper

The reason why the quality of traditional games journalism is dog shit is because the people doing it aren't journalists, they're political activists. It's why the quality of most mainstream journalism is dog shit now. Also, reviewers should not be playing on easy mode, unless they make that they're brand or it's the thesis for that game. I always start on the normal difficulty and then adjust up or down as needed. If I play through a game multiple times I usually like to increase difficulty. Like for The Last of Us, I played on normal, then survivor, then grounded. For people who are familiar with TLoU, grounded is absolutely the way to play; but I wouldn't try playing that game for the first time like that.

The Chicken Chaser

As someone who hardly ever listens to Joe Rogan, please go back on his show Colin! Bring the shady communist dealings to light! Hope one day to call in and talk like Bane to you. Fun episode though sir

Caleb Greer

Please, dear God, reach out and try to get back on Joe Rogan to talk about the issue (as well as whatever else organically arises). If you do, though, don’t forget we were here first when the many new Patrons flood in. ;)

Nick Jones

Agree so much with Colin's argument that reviewers should play on Normal difficulty (pretty much exclusively) and if they DON'T, it should be brought up in paragraph number one of the review.

Cockthatslaps

Ok I don't know why I feel the need to comment this... "Fool me once, shame on you" = you are an asshole for fooling people "fool me twice, shame on me" = I'm an idiot for letting you (a person who has fooled me in the past) fool me! Great episode guys and love the content!

Erk-Prime

BotW you can make cooking interesting. If not looking for guides you discover combinations with all ingredients in the game...make a huge EXCEL sheet lol

LastStandMedia

I just don't understand where I said that it isn't alive or healthy? This is my point of confusion.

LastStandMedia

I appreciate that Jaffe likes to do that, but I'm not really comfortable doing it, personally. Feels rude and incomplete in some way, for our particular product.

LastStandMedia

It just feels like there was a time when the people writing about games were the people who were excited to do so, and happy to do so, and grateful to do so. And then one day that just changed.

Gerson Mercado

Such a fun set of call ins. I do dislike how games offer a good amount of difficulty options yet have no difficulty trophies. Is it just me or has that changed compare to the PS3 era?

BlindRiot

Excellent episode, I think many of the perpetually angry are simply being crushed neath the weight of their Hypocrisy.

BlindRiot

So Xbox outsold PS5 in June…https://www.forbes.com/sites/paultassi/2021/07/16/xbox-series-x-and-s-outsold-switch-ps5-in-us-dollar-sales-in-june/

Anonymous

But, it could also work the other way... "Fool me once, shame on me" = I'm an idiot for letting you fool me! "Fool me twice, shame on you" = Now you're just desperate for attention and an asshole for continuously tricking people. Thoughts?

Zack Apuzzo

Or, as our great George "dubya" Bush once said....fool me twice wont get fooled again

Cockthatslaps

Lol I always thought that was the dumbest speaking mistake where he forgot the saying and later realized he just didn't want a soundbite of him saying "Shame on me" to live in the newscycle, which was actually a wise decision 🤣

MJ SKA BOI

I have to say, in regards to the China conversation, that there is a lot to unpack here. First, in response to the caller, Colin, I don't believe any of your critics want to necessarily "defend" the ongoing genocide in China (unless we are talking about Tankies, but I don't think any Tankies or real leftists are out to get you. I think your critics on this topic are mostly sometimes misinformed center libs trying to navigate the minefield of twitter purity tests. It all comes back to capitalism, though. Capitalists the world over desperately want in on the Chinese market, because it is ideal for maximizing profits globally. Tencent, who you often refer to as a "communist company" is no different, in that their end goal is simply capital. From Twitch sponsoring Fortnite Streamers, to Activision withholding prize money over the Hong Kong protests, the problem here is the inherent greed in capitalism, not communism. These companies aren't going to speak up against the actions of a government that might exclude them from such a profitable market. They'd be actively hypocritical, and therefore uncomfortable. Americans don't want to feel uncomfortable. We live under a perpetual blanket of hypocrisy in that there is no ethical consumption under capitalism, and being afraid to stand up against this genocide is an effect of that, from the highest chairs of the United States government, all the way down to video games journalism publications.

MJ SKA BOI

We all saw what happened in the case of Activision v. Free Hong Kong. That sweet, sweet capital is all that these companies care about. It has nothing to do with Communism. It's about cash in hand.

Zibi Majewski

Colin, you're in such a privileged position it's almost annoying. Even if all of your patrons paid 1 dollar each month, it's still over £12k/month in your account for doing fuck all. Your job only requires you to "talk, talk, talk". No physical labor, nothing. How can you ever be depressed knowing you're living large doing nothing is beyond me.

Guybrush Threepwood

@ Zibi, This is a joke right? I mean, you are in here. Unless you spent the $1 just to come in here and say that? lol.

Hosky

Real joker level stuff paying to comment some shit like that on his patreon lol get a life

Miracle Peach

What did you feel the purpose of your comment was? What did you hope to achieve? Using the word “privileged” is inappropriate, considering Colin’s put in work from day one to get to where he is, today. What makes his career less valuable than your own? If you want what Colin has, then put the work in and achieve it. Otherwise, why are you complaining about it? This feels like the ever-popular thing to do of complaining about and invalidating another person and their career due to being unhappy with your own. What does complaining achieve? Stop it and put the work in.

Miracle Peach

Colin, love what you’re doing, man, and I’m planning to increase my monthly sub amount. Absolutely love the diversity of thought and the respectful conversation, and ESPECIALLY the respectful disagreement. It’s incredibly refreshing. I do have a recent concern…I rarely find issue with anything you do, but I do wish you would’ve sounded a bit more sensitive to people with disabilities in your comment about “people missing an arm.” I’m quite certain you didn’t mean anything bad by it, bc I know you’re a good dude, but it came off a bit harsh. I’m not even sure whether I agree or disagree with you on the topic; I just pictured someone with a disability hearing your comment and taking it the wrong way. Maybe I’m incorrect, but that was my initial feeling. Anyway, keep up the awesome content. Im truly hooked. Love you, Dustin, and Chris, and everything each person brings to the table.

Zibi Majewski

I have to apologise for my above comment. It was unnecessary, uncalled for and completely off the mark. Straight up assumption based on the fact I was angry at the world that day, when couple days prior my childhood's best friend (of my age) died suddenly of severe heart failure. I was drinking heavily on the day of that stupid comment I'm embarrassed of because I didn't even remember I made it until I received notifications from reply. To reiterate, I stepped out of the line, drink-typing baseless nonsense to person I quite frankly admire for years, hence I support the LSM with little I have. For that, Colin, I am truly sorry.
