Marque and Reprisal | Sacred Symbols: A PlayStation Podcast Episode 157

Sony has finally announced a couple of first party acquisitions (and preemptively leaked a third), and while one target has been a very long time in coming, the other is out of left field, indicating that PlayStation is thinking more broadly about how, when, and in what fashion it gets its products into the world. Naturally, we delve deep, welcome Housemarque and Nixxes to the family... and pretty much do the same for Bluepoint, too, though at the time we're recording, a ring isn't yet on its finger. Plus, more news! A peculiar Konami partnership reignites persistent rumors, Sucker Punch's Ghost of Tsushima is getting a native PS5 port and an expansion, Remedy is going all-in on Control, Falcom and NIS America are giving Trails fans exactly what they want, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Will Kevin Butler ever make a comeback? When will PlayStation 5 games come to PC? Which video game websites (if any) are worth your time? Did Colin accidentally get a listener disciplined at work? If Colin is fat, then Im the human personification of the blob...

My dudes, I finally have a PS5. 8 months late to the party through no lack of trying. I am suddenly invested back into the eco system and I am wildly excited to listen to this discussion about the potential projects and games to come. It's funny how hard it was to track or care about PS when being barred from the club. Ha!

Dave Ramos

Was most excited to hear your take on the Trails news. I'm surprised (and a little disappointed) you guys didn't shred us Trails fans 😅. Anyhow, if you do get into the series with Cold Steel, I still highly recommend the PS4 ports. High-Speed/Turbo Mode is just much more respectful of your time than the Vita ports lacking the feature.

I used to deal with ear sweat during long headphone sessions, but i switched to the phillips shp9500. Most comfortable headphones have ever owned.

Timothy Martin

Now can we get PS5 remastered resogun and dead nation?

Toren R. (KESA)

I don't mean any disrespect whatsoever by the question, but I thought the term "indie" was a film carryover, which has to do with HOW the project is financed, but not HOW MUCH the project cost to make. Indie I'm pretty sure doesn't have a "loose" definition, but rather is often misused in common vernacular, which makes sense - without the backing of a major publisher, most games happen to have much smaller budgets and all the accompanying traits of a product that was made with less money. I think the term "indie" in games ,as many people use it is a marketing term that larger (yet independently financed) studios like Supermassive manipulate because of the mostly positive brand associations it grants them within this community. But it really is just that; a marketing ploy. I've always found the conversation about "where are all the AA, A, and B games?" discussion perplexing. They're hiding in plain sight, masquerading as "Indie" titles. Meanwhile, literal 2-person teams like Lillymo, ironically probably suffer from the larger "indie" developers, such as SuperMassive, which has the capital and brand recognition to influence consumer understanding and expectations for what an "indie game" is. I wouldn't be pissed at Sony for not knowing or giving a fuck either - if Supermassive wants to call itself an Indie developer and spend $50k/month in ad placements on their platform, and then sell 6 million copies on the Sony Storefront - KEWL lol this question about what Sony "owes" indie devs can be answered most succinctly by what former Disney CEO Michael Eisner said of Disney, which I believe is a window into how any international corporation operates: "We have no obligation to make history. We have no obligation to make art. We have no obligation to make a statement. To make money is our only objective. But to make money, it is often important to make history, art, a statement, or all three.”

MysticMase

Why did Colin not want to play FF7 Remake PS5 version and/dlc, was it the instant double platinum pop? Or just the idea that the new DLC is only PS5 and not PS4? I don't mind the $10 upgrade for PS5 version for Ghost because it will just run better, instant loads, Dualsense support, stability and graphics boost and new trophy listing which I like. I'm not speaking to the principal of it, it is dumb to charge more, I'm just saying I personally will pony up to play that version instead of the PS4 version on my PS5 if given the choice.

Correction: Casey Hudson was never head of Xbox or head of Xbox Game Studios. While he was with Microsoft (from mid 2015 - 17) he had the title of "creative director." As far as I know he was working with hardware (VR) in some capacity.

Liam Mcnulty

Yes! Been feeling down, so I'm so happy to have the new PlayStation podcast released today! Podcast: "Your pet will die, you'll die, and there's nothing you can do about it" 😂

Zack Fair

I dont believe the news presenters would of said 17 degrees in Europe Colin, I'm from the uk and what they probably would've said is 17 °C. Also we in the uk use both metric and imperial

Hear me out.. I feel the "indie" moniker has some similarities to the vegan one. "Indie" generally refers to smaller studios when being talked about with gamers , even though it means "independent" . Similar to vegan and vegetarian. Indie - smaller studio/budget venture/game (lilymo/sadcat) not owned by a big name/publisher Independent - someone not owned by a big name/publisher Vegetarian - no eating animals Vegan no eating animals or animal products I don't know why I thought if this and it makes sense to me at this very moment, but I think it's just a change of name meaning?

I’m pumped to mow my grass tomorrow. Thank you last stand media

How can you think a fight between a grown man a3 year old and a 9 year old would last one min two adults have a hard time going that long lol it would last probably 2 seconds lmao

LastStandMedia

I actually think the term comes from indie music, with the rise of that format in the post-Napster, MySpace years where the term comes from to begin with.

I know colin i was speaking about the answer chris gave keep up the good work

I had no idea Control was made for only $25 million! In that case, the entire industry should take note; Remedy implemented the best destructibility and great ray tracing (two techniques that can crater performance) while maintaining a high graphical fidelity for 50% or even 25% of other games. It was a AAA game for a AA price, and a lot of other studios should strive for that model.

DocGreen

I thought the gamepass stuff was funny at first but than became quite corny and counter productive. People literally who have been or currently being paid on twitter by ms making joke s about ms paying them to promote gamespass is just provin certain people's point. Especially since that whole machinema debacle which people actually got in trouble for. And the fact that you yourself colin told us to not trust these paid hosts for these events. Like yeah people think GP is a great value sure but lets not act like people aren't getting paid to by certain companies to promote said product when that has been proven in the past

DocGreen

The Frozen wilds was great dlc in worth going back to because it not only explains one glaring plotpoint in the og game. smarter more agressive machines. New and better weapons. Way improved voice acting and mocap and just overall visuals. Also the final boss really makes up for the disappointing final boss from the main game.

I’m pretty sure that Xbox and Remedy have a strained relationship. The CrossfireX deal seems like one made after the fact. Phil Spencer was vocal about his skepticism of single player experiences prior to Game Pass and after Quantum Break flopped. That game left a bad taste in both parties’ mouths. You can even find some snide comments about Xbox from Control’s director as well as Sam Lake here and there, but Remedy has since been playing nice after the CrossfireX partnership was in place. I don’t think they’re interested in selling nor does Xbox want to buy them. That’s on top of how many hands Remedy has in other publishers’ cookie jars like Epic and 505. Makes the deal too complicated while also being a publicly traded company to boot.

Just a bit of a correction to Colin, Nixxes helped Guerrilla Games to finish Killzone Shadow Fall in 2013. That's for the correction. Here a bit of a theory: They'll probably function as a port studio but maybe they also help to finalize games with internal assistance just like XDev. Or maybe XDev wants to make their own game and Nixxes takes place as the internal support studio of XDev.

Patreon needs the ability to upload images so we can make memes such as... Me when Colin says "Is two hours too long for you guys?" when SS is in it's first year (show: person smiling) vs Me when the upload length is regularly 4 hours (show: gravestone)

Kaleb

Colin you should watch Tom Hendersons video, the article you read off doesn't contain all the details he leaked it seems. Tom absolutely confirms there's a single player story and that there will be multiple protagonists again including a woman. Jason Schrier just backed him this morning saying everything he said lines up with what he's heard as well.

i feel like colin is really hitting his stride with all the success.. great to see.

LastStandMedia

Yup, they've been surprisingly open about its budget, largely because I think they're bragging. =)

Leo Sanchez

Wooo! My question got read in the show! Looking forward to your thoughts on Doki Doki :)

Zack Fair

I wonder if it's Resitance games as I'm sure Insominiac tweeted a while back about Resitance and wonder if they had the knowledge of Bluepoint joining the family and PlayStation spoke to insomniac about Bluepoint doing a Remake??

Zack Apuzzo

Definitely wasn't expecting to get seduced by that new outro but here we are. Damn col

LastStandMedia

It would be really nice to get the first three. A remake of the original would be divine. =)

I still enjoy the show but what happened to the notion of respecting our time? It’s tough to get through three or four hours every week. I’m getting 60 - 90 minutes in every week and then not coming back and I feel like my understanding of what’s happening on PlayStation is not what it was when the show was 90 minutes long.

Devilman84

What the hell is the deal with YouTube and the 30 ads I thought we got it ad free

Tony Rivera

HA! I love the hilarious Easter egg at the end LOL good job Dustin.. the zoom in of Chris cracked me up ROFL

Last week you mentioned that Ratchet PS4 was a better game overall than Ps5 I thought that you were wrong. But I am 5-6 hours into Ratchet PS5 and quite frankly....I’m bored. The first 3-4 missions were really awesome but I just have no desire to play it. The dimension shifting is cool but the rift warp seems so artificial like “oh let’s put a rift warp here and here.” I think you are right. I bought a Series S because I can’t stick around hoping for another Ps5 game anytime soon. I’m playing Desparados 3 on game pass have you played it Colin?

Kaz Redclaw

I'm personally not much into Gamepass for the same reason I'm burned out on Netflix and Hulu. It's another service that I'm going to forget that I have, and I'll be giving them $15 per month and not even touching anything on the service. Because of that I've basically dropped every streaming service aside from Amazon Prime and Youtube Premium. When I subscribe to a service now, It's specifically to binge something, then I'll watch a few other things, and unsubscribe after that month. I'm also not someone who plays brand new games most of the time. Most of the time, I'm playing a game that's years old rather than something new, and with Gamepass, those games will have dropped off the service and I wouldn't be able to access them anymore. Even if I were going to pay $15/mo to play brand new games, I'd probably go with Gamefly instead, because then I would have access to Nintendo and Playstation games as well, and then I could also rent some out of print games that are going for more than $60 on ebay. As for the annoyance with Playstation and indies, that's basically why I'm mostly getting indie games on Switch Lite these days. It's not quite as nice as the Vita, but after August it's the best thing we have left on portables getting new games without going to something like an Aya Neo.

Big Boss Games

Just listened to this episode. Fantastic episode (again). I now realize Colin, Dustin and Chris are the perfect trio. They all have there special input. I feel like they're in a very good place right now! Really awesome! Keep up the great work!

David Kramme

Hey Chris, Metro fan and started Exodus when it first launched but bounced off, always meant to go back and after listening picked it up and finished it last weekend, best in the series, just wanted to say thanks, gorgeous on the PS5 for real, it’s an amazing version

BlindRiot

Top drawer episode boys! Colin, I’m with you 100% on Blu rejuicing some moist gems. J&D would make the world a better place.

BlindRiot

To Chris’s point, I agree PlayStation is not the system I go to for fun. Will Sony ever be fun again? Furthermore to Colins point, will PlayStation become likable again? If so when?

Jack M

“Why take Vice City outta the 80s, it’s just miami- who gives a shit?” …wtf guy? Weak point compared to, and considering the likes of, GTA V’s setting (LA) and liberty city. Not mention how insulting of a statement that is bucko

BlindRiot

I’d like to give major props to Ben Smith, show’s always clean, tight, and smooth. We appreciate you.

LastStandMedia

Use the timestamps, Nick! Adding a third person is going to necessarily make the show much longer. That's the tradeoff.

LastStandMedia

You get the audio ad-free, and the video version has no YouTube ads for the duration of its time behind the paywall.

LastStandMedia

It's a fair point. I'm trying to be really mindful of what I'm subscribed too, and even then I feel like I've been totally lax. I finally got rid of HBO and Showtime a while ago, I need to get rid of AppleTV next.

LastStandMedia

Nothing against Miami, but it was Miami in the '80s that made Vice City the game it was, not Miami. It was a spoof on well-worn tropes of that era, and obviously the name speaks to the ultimate show of that era in South Florida. They should go to Liberty City if they're gonna do contemporary. Or just stick with San Andreas.
