Journalism is broken, full-stop. Not just enthusiast press; journalism, generally. The evidence is all around us. What's interesting, though, is that its breakdown may have at least partially begun in our very own industry, and that's perhaps why today's games media is completely unrecognizable when compared to five years ago, no less 10 or 20. To talk through what's happening out there, I (Colin!) invited Nick Calandra on the show. Nick is the newest Editor-in-Chief of The Escapist, a website that's trying to make its way in a world where a never-ending game of musical chairs gives those who can succeed fewer and fewer places to sit. So, let's discuss the decay, its provenance, and what (if anything) can be done to fix what's so obviously in staggering disrepair.

Looking forward to this one!

Going to be a spicy one! Can't wait.

Kenneth Oms

Great episode so far! It sounds like his website In 2016 got hit by the final google update to its penguin algorithm. So if it had a lot of spammy backlinks he got hit with a penalty.

htr0ns

Sounds very interesting. Love this direction you're going w LSM content +guests!

DeucesBruh

IGNS coverage of 6 Days in Fallujah is bizarre. 3 of their 6 huge cover stories absolutely shit on the game and it’s creators, yet they have the exclusive first look gameplay trailer as well.

Jack Doheny

That was a great listen. thanks Colin :)

Ambitious Casual

Keep it up Colin! Whenever a new show posts, I stop what I’m doing and listen! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

Great episode Colin! Can't wait for the next one like this. Now I'll go follow The Escapist

This was a great episode! Been following for a long time and really appreciate your candor and want for better journalism and morality and truth in the industry

James Galos

Great conversation! I want to hear different opinions about games so I know the truth about a game. I came to CLS day one because Colin's interest match my own and I find how he feels about a game usually ends up matching the same way I do at the end. Adding all the new voices on here I have learned about more games I have come to enjoy and tried some games that I thought sucked, but guess what I survived listening to a different opinion about a video game.

Great discussion. It’s certainly interesting to see the mob turning on writers that actually know what they’re doing like Ryan McCaffrey. Would love to listen to him here sometime again.

Jake Z

Were you talking about Rising with Krystal and Saagar, Colin? I wouldn't call it a socialist show. Saagar certainly isn't a socialist. They identify as populists, which has some overlap with socialism, but is distinct.

Brilliant episode Colin. Thank you.

Magister Obscura

This was really enlightening, but also incredibly frustrating. At this point I'm not sure if the game journalist side of this should survive.

Chris

Whoa, Marty Sliva was mentioned. He would be an A+ guest. They silently ousted him and the whole thing was bizarre, I was happy to see him pop back up on the escapist. It’d be cool to get him on SS+, even if he doesn’t want to talk about that stuff, he was always a good podcaster

I really enjoyed this episode.

Colin, I don’t know how I disagree with you on SO MANY THINGS yet like you so much! Anyway, great conversation with Nick! Keep ‘em coming!

FluffyNeko

It's always great to see another Kansas Citian

Will Hahn

Colin, what a great episode! Nick seems like a great guy. I’m gonna follow him on Twitter and look into the escapist!

Manuel Nascimento

PSA for @Colin: if you want a new chair, probably a gaming one isn’t the best. Don’t get fooled by the “gaming” marketing hype, check this out and treat yourself to something more comfortable and healthier to the body: https://youtu.be/9Yhc6mmdJC4

Bogey Zero

Because disagreeing with someone and liking someone shouldn’t be mutually exclusive.

Great episode, this is why I gladly pay to listen

This guy seems like a genuine dude. Glad I listened to this.

"Infamous alt right gamergaters Colin Moriarty and Nick Calandra push wild conspiracy theory's about games journalism" -Probably Kotaku

I mostly just lurk here and enjoy what is always fantastic content but I had to comment on this! This was an absolutely superb interview and conversation. Really enjoyed it from beginning to end, I hope to hear you guys have many further conversations down the line! Thanks for another top drawer podcast.

Ian (616Entertainment)

Colin, I love these recent episodes with outside guests. Colin with the LSM crew and Colin with an outsider are two completely different conversations, and I mean that in a good way. More of these, please.

Anonymous

What a fantastic conversation! Yet again TRUTH! You two really nailed it and am looking forward to the next (if there is one) podcast of the same ilk. Colin, my boy, keeping saying what needs to be said you are killing it!

Brian Rudolph

I always hear the term gamergate but never looked into it. Is there a good video or article explaining what exactly it is?

Nick Jones

There's no point in reading big "journalism" sites anymore. None of the content is useful for anything but adding fuel to the fire. They just want to generate heat for clicks... I just wanna keep developing and playing games, and I'm doing just fine not reading Bloomberg, Kotaku, and Rami Assmail tweets.

Marc Cairney

No it'll send you around in circles. Just picture the Spider-Man meme where they stand pointing at each other. Thats "Gamergate". Hopefully saved you some time :)
