Interesting news emerged in recent days: Sony is funding the creation of a new second party studio in Canada, and it'll be working on a brand new IP for PlayStation. But it's who's leading the team -- Jade Raymond -- that has people excited. But should that excitement be replaced with skepticism? Raymond hasn't released a game in years, and it's uncommon (as in, it virtually never happens) that an industry gets excited over a game producer, as opposed to someone who contributes more creatively. So what gives? Is there reason to be stoked, or is this studio and project nothing more than (for the time being) a figment of our imagination. Plus: More news! Sony has officially revealed PSVR's new controllers, Square Enix has given a proper name to Project Athia, Life is Strange is readying to show off its True Colors, Tiger Woods is now a 2K Sports game, PlayStation is getting generous with the giveaways, and much more! Then: Listener inquiries! Is Colin displaying gatekeeperish tendencies? Are scalpers holding onto their PlayStation 5 consoles? Is watching how long you played on PS5 the new Trophy hunt? Will the delivery man ever find Chris?

The latest Returnal trailer has me pumped as well, but I'm also having the same price tag issues that Dustin mentioned. I just recently got my PS5, and I told myself I'd get Demon's Souls, but even then I've told myself it will someday go on sale and I should just wait. Can't help but feel the same way about Returnal

D'Ante Almo

I secured a Ps5 and it’s getting delivered today. Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on all the news this week. Hype!!!

I think the talk on Jade Raymond went on a bit long. Seemed like Colin kept repeating the same thing towards the end.

Y’all thinking we want your penis sex toys? Naw we want the booty’s

Shawn Hayden

PSNow already gives you "800+ games" and has for a long while. Most first party ps3 games are on the service, many of which are downloadable via the ps4 remaster also being on the service. How and why nearly every talking head in gaming ignores this is baffling. The service by itself cost 1/3 of what game pass does. The value is already freaking there.

Jake Z

Colin, whatever happened to you playing Sackboy with Micah? Also, do you plan on playing It Takes Two with her? Josef Fares is pitching it as rom com game.

Matthew Two T's

Colin, I understand your point about a Sony Game Pass with only quality titles but the beauty of Xbox Game Pass is all the random games that I've discovered through GP. The Xbox Studios exclusives are just icing on the cake.

Anonymous

Man, I really hope Colin gives Disco Elysium a try. I’d love to hear his thoughts on it.

Brandon Soto

We need a full-fledged State of Play for Returnal. I think the game will bomb even if it’s good.

Shawn Hayden

I have this feeling as well. It just feels like no matter how the game turns out, it'll be overlooked by most gamers

TROTMAC96

If there was a fleshlight molded after Colin's anus, I'd definitely by it.

Chris

I just want to say I 100% agree with Colin's "gatekeeping" in most of these instances. FFVII Remake just assumes you played the original. If you don't, you're GOING to be confused. Yakuza is an ongoing story. Would you play Mass Effect 3 first, or watch Return of the Jedi without having experienced anything prior? You could, but you'd be hurting your own experience because, like FFVII Remake, they don't assume you're starting there. *PS Watch Dogs is basically like Final Fantasy in how the sequels relate to each other

Sumojoe118

I guess I'm one of those FF7 posers😂😂. I'm interested in the original but I just can't see myself playing through a 40-50 hour game with turn based combat and no voice acting. I also kind of want to stay blind in terms of major story elements. I will definitely go and play Crisis Core however either through emulation or hopefully a port as it seems like it won't be explored with its own remake.

TROTMAC96

Do you guys not watch the Ryder Cup when it's on? Or can you not handle us Europeans rolling you over nearly every time?

Anonymous

streaming games suck right now, maybe in 5 or 10 years it'll be better.

Dave Carsley

"Us Europeans"? Don't forget, we are the europeans who decided we didn't want to be europeans any more and booted the europeans who disagreed back across the ocean! Don't make us do it again!! :-)

Kaleb

I feel like Square can't win. Everyone makes fun of them for all their games having odd names and the second they give something a normal one word name.... it also gets insulted. I dont understand how Forspoken, a name that I've never seen used as a title before, is generic and bad when it describes the games setting well and is easy to remember.

Caleb Greer

Colin, I think your desire to play every game in a franchise before playing the current one in order to not feel like a poser is inextricably tied to your passion for history and your education in that regard. You can’t stand missing relevant historical context, even with games. :) And games in a franchise (or remakes) certainly don’t exist in a vacuum. Also, you said no Xbox exclusives come close to the top ten PS4 games, but you have yet to play Gears 5, which I would argue is on par. Go play it some time! It’s wayyyy better than the other Gears games.

Stop saying accoutrements please

I know he has a hang-up with the team being supposedly pro-Stalin but having played the game prior I had to chuckle as they must certainly be provocateurs. The game is an onion with many different layers to interpret and is a satire on many levels. Didn't get to finish it but I'd go back if I had a good chunk of time.

Mass Effect 3 is not a remake of Mass Effect 1. Same with Jedi. I was a huge Final Fantasy 7 fan growing up (my second JRPG after Chrono Trigger) - but I simply don't have time for the remake. So if I did have time and never played the original, I'd probably play the remake first - especially if I never grew up with turn-based RPGs. I agree with Dustin 100%. Thanks for calling out Colin. Someone needs to do it once in awhile. Adds a nice spice to the show. Love it!

Ivan Hornett

Waffle House does take out. You’re welcome.

Well done on throwing the challenge flag in there Dustin re FF7. I very much appreciated that moment. I've played FF7 many times but I have to say that Square Enix would have failed if they hadn't brought in any new fans with this remake. Now you would certainly get the most out of it having played the original but you still have to make sure the new game can stand on its own merit.

Anonymous

Dustin at the end ya dropped FACTS. Good show overall but yall did seem mean towards Jade lol

Michael Limauro

I agree with Colin that people should play ratchet 2016 before rift apart since it’s a more modern game and much shorter than the original FF 7. In 2021 it’s hard to want to go back to a very long game from 1997. I think that familiarizing yourself with the story of the original is sufficient. I’m really enjoying the remake with this approach and enjoyed Dustin’s take regarding FF7 remake since I was one of the people that haven’t beaten the original game. I love when you guys have opposite takes from time to time, makes for great entertainment!

Kendall Helmstetter Gelner

I really doubt scalpers are holding onto any consoles at all. That makes no sense, just from a profit standpoint - I've been watching eBay and the price although still high, is dropping slowly. The resale price on eBay is for sure not going anywhere but down over time so the longer scalpers wait to sell, the less they make. Scalpers get a PS5 and then flip it ASAP.

Luke Silletta

This Jade Raymond stuff would have been more impactful like 2 years from now at an E3 style event where she comes out and shows off the new game on a stage. The proof will be in the pudding at this point.

Jorge Sosa

Metal gear solid 3 was the first game I played in the series. I loved it and went back and played all the main games before it, including the msx games. One of my favorite series of all time.

Andrew

Dustin is a god damn nerd but I love that man

Piston Pants

I am really touched by all the people that seem to worry about others missing out on every nuance of a game by not playing all the games in a series. It is truly heart warming you want to see me and others live out every moment so I can seemingly have a better experience going forward. But to this I say don't worry about it. Me and the rest of the people who play the games in a certain order or miss certain games in a series will be fine because it doesn't matter. But it is sweet you care so much. Run along and play you little scamps.

Clint

So I play Avengers almost every day. The game gives me no reason to purchase the micro transactions. I would have paid $10-15 for both dlc packs.

LastStandMedia

We just got distracted. She's playing a lot of CoD; I'm jumping around. (And no, no plan for that.)

LastStandMedia

I guess? You don't have to either name your game PROJECT OCTOPATH TRAVELER or FORSPOKEN. There are other options!

Shawn Hayden

I played through the campaign when it came out but had no real reason to continue it past that, I went back to it this week with the ps5 version. The stuff they've added since launch is great content. It just seems like their rollout of content is way way way too slow. What's weird and sad about this game is that at it's core its a pretty great hack n slash rpg. It just needs better management.

Nigel Engel

Still playing avengers and it looks like it might be a lot better in the future. I at least have a bit more faith in the avengers being saved than anthem. Love the show and Dustin calm down a bit with the marvel hate and you better not be real about it being illegal.

Kenneth Oms

Forspoken looks like a tech demo to me. It’s just an empty open world saying hey look how pretty we can make environments

yosh_wah

It for sure looks to still be in the early stages. It is pretty looking, but understandably looks like a tech demo. I'm interested to know more about the story and the mission structure, as well as the leveling systems and if there will be any crafting or features of the like.

Shawn Hayden

I went back to it when they launched the next gen version after playing it at launch through the campaign. I can tell they've improved it somewhat and added quite a bit of content but they've got to keep the content coming to keep me hooked. It really is a great game being held back by a lack of content.

MikeLee

I get where Col's coming from w/ FF7 classic, but it sounds snobbish to say "Well you're a poser if you didn't do it that way." Like c'mon, that's some immature school yard stuff. And I'm w/ Chris, sometimes going backwards is very cool, I've done it w/ a few series like Metal Gear and Persona. Certainly didn't hurt my experience, or more accurately, it didn't bother me at start w/ the new and dig into the oldies afterwards. If anything, I think that gives you a more unique perspective.

Henry Morgan

I totally understand the obsession with wanting to play every game in a series and understand context, but when it comes to remakes like FFVII, if I want to experience the story for the first time I’m going to play the one with modernized gameplay and 2021 graphics instead of one that came out the year I was born. Especially if the remake is high quality. Then maybe go back and play the original to see where they differ!

NeO JD

Something about how Dustin said “in my tummy”, I was like oh yeah he’s a baby 😄 Didn’t expect Dustin to not like LIS 1, figured that’d connect with his young boy self. I bought FF7 on PS4, hated the battle system and hard quit, then played the demo for Remake, loved it and played the whole game. Am I still a poser? 😄😛

LastStandMedia

I don't even know what game you're talking about, which goes to show how shot I am. EDIT: Now I understand.

Henry Morgan

Just beat the final chapter of the remake, and I now know what you mean by the importance of playing the original first. 90% of the ending went entirely over my head. Colin was right
