We've stayed apart long enough, don't you think? In a (rather smart) attempt to allow Defining Duke (our Xbox podcast) to grow its own identity without me (Colin), I've stayed far away. But that doesn't mean I can't corral one of those guys every once in a while, right?! Thus, for the first time ever, welcome MrMattyPlays to Sacred Symbols+. Today's episode is all about one thing: Bethesda and Xbox. What're things looking like from the Xbox side of the fence? I had the same thought as well. I think there’s potential for that to happen in the future on PS with a Fallout 3 for example.

I feel like Xbox trying to win by buying a big publisher is kind of shitty. I know Sony bought a couple of studios like Insomniac, but that didnt really affect Xbox because Insomniac was always a 2nd party to Sony anyways. Sony just invested in the new studio Haven and I think Xbox has proven they are not capable of cultivating a in house studio from the ground up. I dont think the Bethesda deal is too much of a hit to Sony, but if Microsoft buys another big publisher than that's a real problem for Sony.

Not sure why it's a big surprise that Microsoft is buying big names. Pretty much every Game franchise they have was bought from someone else. Bungie with Halo. Epic with Gears. Minecraft with Mojang. They bought Rare. This wasn't surprising.

I think its shock more than surprise. Those companies and games you reference never had a presence on Playstation. Microsoft just took a catalog of franchises away that many people have played on Playstation for many years. Whenever a move like this is made there will be lasting ripple effects that we probably will not clearly see until several years down the road. I just wish Xbox added their own pieces to the playing field instead of taking them away.

So Xbox has 3 podcasts this week, why couldn't this of been done on one the Xbox podcasts? I'm not trying to come across as rude but I thought you wanted to keep your PlayStation and Xbox separate and now I'm paying for 3 xbox podcasts this week and only one of PlayStation

I think the reason Phil had to do the "word soup" with regards to exclusivity is because there's so much he literally can't talk about because of contractual reasons and red tape. I really think it is that simple. I'm also thinking the next mmo from the ESO team would make a lot of sense to go to all platforms...

Microsoft and the worlds biggest game with over 200 million sold, Minecraft released a spin-off with Minecraft Dungeons on everywhere. I don’t know how this plays into this conversation, but Microsoft has put their IP, their biggest game IP ever on PlayStation. They bought Mojang (a single studio) for $2.5 billion; a third of what they bought Bethesda for (7 studios I believe?). Mojang is worth more than one or two or maybe even three of these studios combined if Microsoft bought them for that much. I can’t see Microsoft putting all or most Bethesda games as exclusive if they didn’t do it with Mojang. Am I wrong in this assumption?
