If you're a fan of documentaries, then there's a good chance you've heard of Grey Gardens, the 1975 so-called "direct-cinema" documentary that investigates the lives of two women -- a mother and daughter -- who live in isolation and complete squalor on the eastern end of Long Island. Why is that notable? Well, two reasons: They live in the Hamptons, one of the most exclusive and expensive places to dwell in the entire country, and the occupants of Grey Gardens (their crumbling estate) happen to be the aunt and cousin of none other than Jacqueline Kennedy. This is a truly strange film, eclectic and alive and real... and it's an absolute must-watch. Let's jump in.

Underrated episode of Knockback

Only discovered this film after seeing the first episode of Documentary Now! which parodies this film (each episode does a different docu). Recommend watching it for a laugh! Incredibly niche stuff.

I personally enjoy documentaries and just finished watching this out of your recommendation. Thank you! It was quite a strange film with quirky characters that make you wonder what else is going on in their lives. Another documentary I recommend is Crumb. It features an interesting look into the life of the comic artist Robert Crumb.

I'm really glad you liked it. I'll look into your recommendation; I don't think I've ever heard of it.

Enjoyed this episode. I have had Grey Gardens on bluray for a while without watching it so hearing you were doing the podcast on it finally pushed me to watch it. It was terrific and very strange with the characters. I agree with Colin. It is a dark and tragic rather than a show of the love between mother and daughter. So many dark undertones between them that you have to interpret.

Good episode, going to check that out. Have you watched the last dance yet? It’s the Michael jorden documentary. Very good

Hey Colin, nice review of a deep cut. This film is actually quite well known in the lgbt community since little Edie was impersonated by Jinkx Monsoon, the winner of the reality show RuPauls drag race season 5. It’s pretty rare that my gaming hobby mixes with lgbt pop culture. A treat.
