It's time to wrap up our three-episode run of Breaking Bad analysis with a deep dive into the beloved series' final season, as well as its surprise epilogue movie that came some six years later. The culmination of Walt's journey dominates Season 5, yet in El Camino, we finally get to see what happened with Jesse, too. There's much to discuss here: Madrigal, Todd, the Aryan Brotherhood, the fate of Hank and Gomez, and much, much more. But at the heart of it all lies Walt and Jesse, on a bullet train toward disaster. Obviously, we can't look away.

You know, it's unfortunate when somebody fundamentally disagrees with the perceived quality of something that you love so much. Breaking Bad is my favorite TV show of all time and it bums me out that Colin can't get into it the way I did, at the very least I can say I'm happy that Dagan enjoyed it for the most part.

Been frantically trying to finish up the show and El Camino in time for this as it's my first time viewing as well . I'm happy to say I finished El Camino last night. Can't wait to hear what you guys have to say :)

Kenneth Oms

Finally a doze of los hermanos moriarty before the long weekend!

Really enjoyed that you guys broke the series up into bite sized chunks. You were able to give each season the necessary amount of attention. Looking forward to when you guys eventually go back to redo The Sopranos with this method. Will be listening soon and am looking forward to hearing your opinions on El Camino. As a huge fan of BB and BCS, it was a huge letdown for me. Since it was Vince's first movie, the pacing seemed odd. Also, the gunfight at the end seemed so ridiculously unbelievable. Maybe I was just expecting too much? And no. Fat Todd didn't weigh in (zing) on this opinion.

Kenneth Oms

Aw dude if you do Jericho I’ll buy my brother a membership so he can listen since he loves it

Watching El Camino made it very clear that the show should’ve continued with Jesse as the main character. Still was cool to see his epilogue, even though it wasn’t really needed.

Hey Colin, with respect I think the reason a lot of people assume you hate thjngs when you don't is I think you spend a lot more time talking about the negatives and not much about what you liked. Over the years whenever I've heard you talk about Breaking Bad, it was always negatively. I don't think I ever heard you say a positive thing about it (before these episodes) even when you out out the disclaimer that you don't hate it. So that's what I usually took away from those conversations. I think that's also why people got the same impression about Ghost, before the spoilercast, you only brought up the negatives on the various SS episodes. Even on the Last of us Spoilercast I didn't hear too much about what you loved in the game, just that you really loved it and how much it resonated with you. Now I'm not here to tell you how to talk about things, I'm just giving you some first hand insight into why I personally assumed you dislike things more than you really do. I still absolutely love to hear you talk about everything you love or hate, so please don't take this as an insult or even a criticism.

Colin my bro...It always irks me hearing this take on LOST and how the ending was what everyone thought from S1, which is “they were dead the whole time” which is not even true! The only time anyone was “dead” in that entire show, was during select scenes in season 6. ALL of s1, 2,3,4,5 happened, everyone was alive. People bounced out of that show and came back for the finale and didn’t understand this. I’m not saying you did that, but man, I love all of Lost, and it’s sad that so many people misunderstand the ending. And I’m totally content with how much of the mythology was explained. I think any deeper you would get into midichlorian territory ridiculousness. Sorry this has nothing to do with BB I just heard you say that and I had to defend my Lost.

Miles Williams

The dinner with Walt, Jesse, and Skyler might be my favorite scene from of the entire show. It's hilarious!

Bogey Zero

I really think Lost fell off, I really didn't enjoy those last few seasons. But it's maddening how many people think the ending of Lost implies they were dead the entire time or that they were in limbo the whole time.

Bogey Zero

I really don't see how you can say Walt didn't give a shit about Jesse. He clearly does. In season 3 he threw away his safe million dollar a month job when he killed those 2 guys to save Jesse. Straight up told Gus if he kills Jesse, he'll never cook for him which obviously means death for Walt. In the finale he went into the Aryan gang's hideout to sacrifice himself and get Jesse out of there. Was Walt an absolute monster to Jesse? Absolutely. But I think it's false to say he doesn't give a shit about him. I think that's what makes that relationship so interesting. It honestly reminds me a lot of Tony Soprano and Christopher's relationship. Tony obviously cared for Chris, but he treated him like shit but in the end he killed him. And I love both of those characters just like I love both Walt and Jesse.

Hey Colin, you are entitled to your opinions but why do this topic? Breaking Bad is revered because it succeeds in every aspects, writing, acting, and setting, hearing Dagan try to see your points really bums me out, idk what your problem with this show is exactly but I really don’t get it, just this guys opinion. Will still subscribe because your content is great, take care bro!

Miles Williams

Walt was wearing a bald cap in El Camino. It looks so weird! Haha.

DoritosAllDay

My favorite part of explaining to people who're mad because they misunderstood the ending, is that then people go "Oh but even if they weren't in purgatory the whole time, they still did a purgatory!1234:@#/!" like that's at all the same thing.

Kenneth thomas

Well without relistening atm, I believe you implied it was poo and then said something like "it ended up being what everyone thought it was gonna be from season 1" which among the viewers was generally that theory that they were dead the whole time, unless you meant something different. So okay, you didn't exactly say it and I apologize if I misquoted. But what I heard sounded a lot like the "dead the whole time" implication

Zach

I have to agree with Henry. Walt no longer had a need for Jesse once he started cooking for Gus. That should have been the end of their relationship if Walt didn't care for the boy. I found it strange in these podcasts how much love was given to Jesse and how much shit Walt got. Yes, Walt did some messed up things. Jesse did too. Jesse was constantly using his friends Badger, Skinny Pete, and Combo. Combo is killed slinging crystal for Jesse. Jesse leaves Badger in the Arizona desert with no way of getting home after they fight when Jesse keeps dumping the crystal he thinks isn't pure enough. He could have given that to Badger to sell seeing as Badger was the one that supplied all the psuedo for those cooks. Jesse was stealing crystal from Gus which could've have gotten both him and Walt killed. He then slings said stolen crystal at an addicts support group for Christ sake with Badger and Skinny Pete being the voice of reason toward the end of that run. Jesse also berates the support group at one time when they had been nothing but nice to him. I just don't understand the love for Jesse. I also think you guys royally got the relationship between Jesse and his parents wrong. Especially the kicking him out of his aunt's house. The whole point of that was the parents did indeed own the house. When Jesse's mom finds the meth lab at the house that would make them liable for the crimes being committed inside. He is lucky they didn't call the authorites right then and there. He then uses the meth lab to blackmail them into getting the house back at a very low price. I can't think of a bigger POS move than that. I mean how much lower can you sink than blackmailing your own parents with the crimes your choosing to commit. There was no redemption for Jesse in my eyes after he pulled that. I kinda got off topic, but I started re-watching the show after hearing these podcasts. I had to be sure I hadn't missed something between Walt and Jesse. I don't think I did. The biggest thing that stuck out to me in the "Does Walt care for Jesse?" question is this. Hank interviews Jesse's mom in season 2 when they are trying to find Walt after his "disappearance". She has this to say about Walt "Mr. White must have seen some potential in Jesse. He really tried to motivate him. He was one of the few teachers that cared." One of the few who cared.

My main issue with this show is how did all of this take place within in a YEAR! I always thought this show spanned 3 years at least

NeO JD

Hope the elliptical is working for you again Colin. Personally, I’ve been trying to eat less recently and just that alone has made me lose 20 pounds. Into the Spiderverse is the best Spidey film there is. Can’t wait for you to see it. Lastly, the way you pronounce Ozymandias kills me. Have you never seen Watchmen? 😅

LastStandMedia

Thanks! I'm on Day 19 in a row of working out. Still eating the same, but hoping to shed a few pounds without being obsessive about literal weight. We'll see how it all turns out. =)

Andrew

Yes, why speak your opinion if it’s out of the mainstream. I don’t get your comment, David.

Andrew

Hi Colin and Dagan, great show!!! Thank you :)

Tyler Cumerford

Nah there's the scenes where Gretchen tries to give him money and they sit at the diner and he tells her she's an idiot n stuff. Member? Lol

Tyler Cumerford

Sorry I'm at the part where you're saying there wasn't any scenes with Gretchen and Elliott.

Tyler Cumerford

Something else that's funny is that "Alaska" at the end is really just about 20 min from Walters house outside of ABQ. I go there all the time. Haha

Dominick Petrello

Hey Colin long time listener and never comment, but since I love Lost, I feel like I must say whatever you’re saying about people’s prediction since the beginning being true was definitely NOT true. They were not dead the entire time, everything that ever happened on that island actually happened in the real world. The “flashbacks” in season 6 were the only thing that wasn’t “real” in the sense of it being in the real world. I think upon a rewatch (which I hope will be a great KB episode), you’ll see what I mean. Love this show and all your others and I hope you’re well.

Joey

Loved all three of these episodes. Keep it up Colin and Dagan KnockBack is awesome.

Hi5 Music

I’m absolutely in the camp that El Camino was unnecessary. Not just that, but it’s boring, and half of it is flashbacks that I didn’t care about. It takes 2 hours to say very little. It was also made too late. Everyone looks different. It ultimately tainted the the whole show which was until that point an iconic experience. I actually made my own edit of the movie which books it down to the essentials and comes out to just an hour.

LastStandMedia

I would argue that the lateness hurts it, for sure. Still, if I were a bigger fan, I would have been stoked to return to the universe.
