While Persona 4 Golden was arguably Vita's most beloved games, the series didn't hit true mainstream, western success until Persona 5 came to PS3 and PS4 several years ago. Now, with Persona 5 Royal -- 2020's best-received PS4 title, exclusive or otherwise -- developer P Studio and publisher Atlus have followed up P5 with a revised and expanded version of the game titled Persona 5 Royal. Royal holds a stunning score of 95 on Metacritic, and it features fresh social links, a new palace, dozens of quality-of-life changes, and even an entirely new ending, so there's a quite a bit to go over. Because we felt it wasn't right for us to ignore such a monumental PlayStation release just because the core Sacred Symbols cast hasn't played it, we tapped Dustin Furman (gaming podcaster and CLS' editor) and MrMattyPlays (gaming podcaster, YouTuber, and Side Quester) for this week's SS+. We hope you enjoy it. (For those that are interested in overall impressions of the game, the first part of the show is spoiler free! Spoilers begin at 0:19:11, so consider yourself warned!)

Mitch Krassin

Persona 5 came out on PS3 in the states

Kenneth Oms

Alright boys let’s roast these weebs! Just kidding excited for this one!

Loving it so far fellas 👌😁

So excited to hear about a game i will never touch but want to hear about! Thanks gentlemen for stepping in!

Sumojoe118

I have the original Persona 5 and I was loving it but I kind of got burnt out from the combat after 40 hours. I was a bigger fan of the all the character interaction stuff outside of the dungeons.

Anonymous

I hope this doesnt come off as rude but I believe the description is incorrect. Persona 5 was released on ps3 in north america as well. I actually own it.

Ryan Harvey

Had to play "So happy world" (3rd Trimester song) in the background at a low level for this one!

Jessica Gutiérrez

I just could not get into Persona 5, I tried, and I got it day 1, it was just so convoluted and boring that I couldn't bring myself to play it past the first 30 minutes. Haven't listened to the review yet, but hopefully this review shines a light on the difference because as a casual Persona person when I saw the name Persona 5 Royal I think "game of the year edition".

Anonymous

I can tell you the first 30 mins dont change much ('_>')

David Kramme

Much more than GOTY edition (having played both versions) but I totally understand, grab Royal and get through the first dungeon, maybe 3-4 hrs and you'll be hooked, amazing game, and btw you guys were great hosts, if you do a DOS2 episode Ill kick $50 + my reg $5 for that month, as I know Colin and Chris will never play that game either!

I've played the first 10 hours of this game multiple times and could never do anymore. I don't have time to play a game that feels like chores.

Anonymous

Never played a persona game and I most likely never will. It’s just not for me. With that being said, I loved the podcast. Hope to hear more from you guys!

Anonymous

Great episode! I hope you'll do another one in the future

Luke Douglas

Woah this was a great episode! Have these guys do a show again! They have good chemistry

Kyle Goodrich

I liked it guys. Not even a JRPG player but was fun to listen to. I think it'd be great if we heard more of Matty and Dustin on CLS!

Anonymous

Only got about 15 hours into persona 5, it wasn’t for me, but really enjoyed listening to you guy talk about the game. Well done guys. 👍👍

Anonymous

I’d love to get one of theses with Matty for Nioh 2. If he’d be interested??

Alan Ortega-Lopez

I'll give it a listen when I'm done with the game!

Dean Redinbaugh

Very well done fellas! I haven't consumed either y'all's content too much, but felt like I've been listening to you for years... Would definitely love a couple more episodes like this peppered in on subjects that Chris' and Colin aren't into. Maybe we could have a sacred symbols episode where all four of you debate what the most overhyped game franchises are :-)

Will Hahn

I gotta be honest, I could care less about the persona games and JRPGs in general, but Dustin has such a soothing voice, I’ll listen to it anyways. Lol.

Thoroughly enjoyed this. Can't wait for more!

Guys, just want to say awesome job! This was a great podcast, and I have been convinced to check the game out! I hope to see more of these podcasts in the future. Honestly, I am really enjoying seeing this brand grow, and hearing more and more opinions and voices in the company is very cool.

It's official. We need Dustin and Matty to make more podcasts for CLS! Thanks for the great spoilercast of P5!

Anonymous

I need a Dustin and Matty post-mortem of NieR: Automata, and a review/spoiler cast for NieR: Replicant. Great job all around!

Arnaldo Martin

Great job, Dust and Matty. #nierautomatatakeover. Colin and Chris, it was definitely a great choice to have 2 others, who are into games like Persona, do a game specific podcast. It makes the already great Sacred Symbols even more well rounded. Keep making everyday great!

Josh Correa

For someone who never played a Persona game ever. Is Persona 5 Royal Edition a good start? Or is Persona 4 Golden Edition a better starting point?

strawhatninja

I loved this guys! You had good chemistry and I thought you guys should really do a podcast together. It also helped that Persona is one of my favorite franchises.

LastStandMedia

That's how P4G felt to me. I liked so many aspects of it, but so many others were so... mundane. I didn't get how it all mixed together. I'm pretty open-minded and eclectic with the games I play, but there's something about it I just don't care for.

LastStandMedia

I'm really pleased with the positive response to this show, so you can bet we'll have these two do more.

LastStandMedia

Thank you! I thought it was the right choice too, but I didn't know for sure what you guys would think.

LastStandMedia

A lot of people say P5R is a great place to jump in, but I'm no series expert, so I'll let someone else chime in...

MrMattyPlays

It’s a lot, Josh. I’d say P4G is a bit more beginner friendly because P5R will slam you with tons and tons of options. It’s easier to manage, be more efficient, and feel like you can see everything when you’ve played Persona before Royal. Just my take, but Royal is more modernized, so it’s easier to get into :)

Jajcen Harris

I personally think P4 was a product of it's time and not a timeless product...I think if you love P5, then go back to P4 if you want more.

Zibi Majewski

I loved the spoilercast. As an owner of platinum 🏆 and sinking over 150hrs into this masterpiece, I'm just glad to expand my knowledge of how others have perceived this masterfully crafted story. There's a great dynamic between you too, you have my blessings to take over CLS for good. 😉 In all seriousness, I hope to hear from you again soon, now let's pressure Chris to will into existence P3 & 4 remaster.

This is an amazing episode. I'd love to see you guys come back for another show on CLS. Maybe like a monthly show about other JRPGs? Regardless, this was awesome. Keep up the great work!

Cash

I know your expectations got burned with Persona 4 Golden after being recommended it so often, but can you try out the first hour of Persona 5 Royal one day, maybe a let's play? I don't think it's one of the best JRPGs ever like some, but it's definitely the best feeling JRPG I've played.

Eduardo Banda

Great episode and i really hope to see Persona 4 Golden and Persona 3 Fes on ps4. Persona Q ganes are awesome too.
