2019 was an interesting year for games. While we eagerly await The Next Generation (no, not the Star Trek show, you godforsaken nerds), a litany of good, great, and even fantastic games hit our precious PlayStation 4 in recent months, and now that the last year is in the books, it's time to look back on some of the best titles '19 had to offer. Without further ado, here are our favorite games of the past 365 days or so, with a special Sacred Symbols twist: A bunch of completely made-up awards, some of which no developer would actually want to win. Alas! We simply couldn't help ourselves.

Oooo my balls are ready! Happy New Year, Colin!

Happy New Year, Colin! Excited to see these awards. I started listening to Giant Bomb's GOTY discussions and realized I missed out on so many games and really only played a handful this whole past year. Haven't been this excited to play games like this in a few years.

Well I just figured out my New Years resolution. Proof read all my comments for SS while sober. Happy New Year Gents!

I believe kojima said he wouldn’t do a sequel to death stranding. Maybe something in the same universe. I would say that whatever Kojima does, it’ll be in Space. He has a lot of Space imagery in stranding. From the astronaut keychain, to Mads telling you that going to the moon is a great achievement in one of those BB memories.

Barrett Boswell

Never thought about the "finishing till completion" interpretation when I made that comment on KH3 and now I really regret typing that when Chris brought that up lol. Not putting that again. Happy New Year to you both!

Snagged Control today for $39 Canadian. Great deal since we're paying $79 now. Eager to get going on it.

The return of Colin’s Bane impression!! Yesss!!!

Happy New Year! Thanks for being a part of my 2019.

The stealth in Plague Tale is appropriately difficult. It's not cheap. There's often only one stealth solution for the encounters early on, but it opens up later in the game when you get more upgrades. I am really astonished Colin hasn't given this game more of a chance considering he's such a huge Last of Us stan and a fan of historical fiction in general. The game is short and sweet too. It really is amazing what this small dev team was able to accomplish with this game.

LastStandMedia

I think 2019 was a bit of an underrated year for games, frankly, even in the holding pattern we find ourselves in!

Real Radec

Shout out to the MediEvil remake as well. Had so much fun getting the plat. Hopefully s remake of the sequel is xoming. I don't even need a 3rd game just remake the 2nd and my MediEvil needs will be fulfilled.

I was sitting on the couch listening to this episode and playing Fell Seal: Arbiters Mark as Colin announced it as his GOTY. I gotta agree that, while not my GOTY, it is an amazing game that really scratches an itch I’ve had for many years. While there are a lot of SRPGs out there, this one has a particular feel to it that is reminiscent of FFTactics without coming across as too derivative. I give my “Best Game to Play While Listening to a Podcast” award to Fell Seal: Arbiters Mark.

It's the closest thing we've gotten to Final Fantasy Tactics in a very, very long time. It's awesome.

Jeremy

I’m always surprised when people praise the Hordes in Days Gone. They were the worst part of the game to me. Other than them I quite enjoyed it.

I'm giving myself one more week to get my best of the year lists done. i will say some of my favorite games of the last year were DMC 5, RE 2 remake, slay the spire, super mario maker 2, FE Three houses, baba is you, Jedi fallen order. also i think i may include castlevania collection on there, it was awesome. it was a year of live service games for me. i finished the first division, played destiny 2 a lot, got through anthem. also i played through all of borderlands, borderlands 2 for the first time. currently i'm on the pre-sequel. love that series now

NeO JD

“Did you like The Batman movies?” Clearly Chris doesn’t know of Colin’s Bane. 😄 Best Unintentional Comedy isn’t Fallout 76?! TWD’s first season is its best season. The rest are ok but the series finale was disappointing. It’s interesting hearing you say you’re not as good at video games anymore when you can still play Mega Man like nothing and I’ll try it and die every time. lol

D'Ante Almo

Yes Colin, you were spot on with the pronunciation. Happy new year guys!!

Alan Ortega-Lopez

Ace Combat 7 VR missions with the flight stick were 👌👌👌

Biv

I will never understand the love for Death Stranding. It was soul crushingly boring. Fell Seal is amazing.

Any spoilers for in this show? Still have a couple 2019 games to finish

Anthony Longo

Not gonna lie Colin you are kind of out of touch with the “painless “moving comment. The fact that you thought paying $1200 to ship 12 boxes across the country was somehow painless lol. Most people would have drove them there for that amount of money. That’s an inordinate amount of money to ship some boxes. Don’t ever forget the price of milk Colin. Don’t become Hilary.

LastStandMedia

There's no need to put an arbitrary time limit on your GotY if you don't have to deliver the goods like we do. I say: Take your time!

LastStandMedia

I don't think we spoil anything here any more than we usually do on a standard show... which is not very much at all.

LastStandMedia

I shipped 750 pounds of stuff across the country for like $2,500. I think that's a pretty good deal, personally.

Are you ever going to do a political podcast?

To be honest: I was very disappointed with 2019. Every game I was excited for disappointed me. I can only think of 1 game off the top of my head that came out this year that i enjoyed. Granted, i did not play DMC 5, RE 2 remake and some others, so maybe i havent played my 2019 GOTY yet.

Joseph Tartaglia

Colin, waiting for a price drop on Untitled Goose Game? It’s already inexpensive and since you’re pulling 10G’s each month on Patreon, you can afford it hahaha

Hodge

My game of the year was Apex purely because I’ve been too busy to play any of these games. Putting in a quick half hour session when I can is easier than trying to start a 30 hour campaign 😭 I’ll get to Jedi, Death Stranding, and Control one day (hopefully). Also, Rise of Skywalker was fine. Better than Last Jedi

Kaz Redclaw

Days Gone was my game of the year, but I haven't played a ton of games from this year. Just Pic-a-Pix Pieces, the 3 Spyro remakes, Toejam and Earl: Back in the Groove, Borderlands 3 and Pictoquest.

Chase Blauvelt

You know, I watched the last Jedi recently and I have made peace. Still don't love it but I can at least mention it without vomiting profusely. For those who say it's worse than the prequels (specifically Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones) your arrogance blinds you. Seriously, no way is the last Jedi worse than episode 2.

Just to give an idea of how cheap Anthem has gotten, I was getting Rage 2 on Amazon UK on Black Friday and it was £18 on it's own or £10 when bundled with Anthem!

“what do you want me to do with Daffy Duck” front runner for quote of 2020

My game of the year is Dragon Quest Builders 2 for the switch

Daniel Schiffer

Darkwood! Yes! Great ep. Random awards are such an entertaining tradition.

I'm actually enjoying Days Gone quite a bit, its a bit rough but regardless I'm having a good time with it. I didn't have much hopes for it initially, but it was on sale for $26 on PSN and I was like ah what the heck, lets try it!

Anonymous

I beat RE2 and The Outer Worlds over Christmas break. Both were very good. I’m playing Control now and really liking it. You guys were right in terms of there being too much codex to read, but I think the narrative is good and combat is great.

Kaz Redclaw

I play tons of puzzle games, I'd run out of picross games if I only stuck to the Nintendo releases though, so Pic-a-pix fills the gaps between those.

Kevin Cooper

I can see why some Atari 2600 games may be painful to revisit, but to be honest a lot of Activision games on the console have some pretty fantastic gameplay loops. Frostbite, Crackpots, and Keystone Kapers are games that I revisit/enjoy regularly in short bursts, and often just to chase my own high scores. River Raid (as you mentioned) alongside Sea Quest and Chopper Command are another great batch of Activision games as well. None of these games would make me buy the upcoming Atari VCS, but each of them are fun in their own right.

For the love of God, please play Trails in the Sky FC and SC before Cold Steel. In simplest terms, Sky is to FFVI as Cold Steel is to FFX. If that doesnt do it Sky is a high stakes political thriller where all NPCs react to your decisions.
