Toys are an integral part of childhood, but for quite a few of us, they remain relevant in some way, shape, or form long after they probably should. Then again, that's what's so fun about toys as we get older: They're plastic encapsulations of a simpler time, before bills, relationships, jobs, and reality took over. Today's guest, Kenny Koepnick, works at a toy and collectible shop in Ohio, and not only does he get to live in a world of nostalgia, but he knows a whole lot about what makes that world tick. How are old toys and collectibles priced? What products are in demand, and what others have no value at all? How do collecting trends materialize and dissipate, and how is it similar or different from other completionist-type hobbies? Turns out we've much to discuss.

The best fireside chat all season, bravo to the both of you. I am glad I can now hand down all of my old 3.5 inch star wars toys without regret, obviously besides Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker and Wicket!

Way cool topic. This one is super relevant to my interests as I've always been a toy collector. I was on the ground floor in the 90's when people were speculating everything: toys, comics, cards, the era of variant covers and variant figures. Looking back it really sucked. In 2000, I lost everything to a house fire and never really got back into collecting in the same way. Nowadays, I only collect the stuff that really means something to me that I don't plan on selling. Some would even argue that I'm destroying my collection because I bought 30 or 40 12" Star Wars figures that I'm in the process of customizing. I alter them to make them more screen accurate. So I guess all that to say my collecting is far more personal and less about money than it used to be. (If anyone is interested in seeing some of my figures, just look up "jbatsolo" on Instagram.) Thanks guys for this awesome episode!

This episode was so much fun! Thanks Kenny for talking about this. Also I love Funko Pops, I only have a couple but I'm willing to bet if I show you one you could tell me who it was, they're not that identical lol. (To Kenny) I actually watch Curt and Zack's show so I would love to know which episodes is your store?

I don’t know jack shit about toys, and I have no desire to be a collector, but I could listen to you two talk about toys once a week. It would be dope as hell to hear Kenny and Dagan talk too...

I think the way you collect is a more satisfying endeavor. Do something for yourself, at your pace, because you like it. Sounds kinda perfect.

Kenneth Koepnick

Man, I love seeing the response to this already! I was super nervous I was gonna come across sounding like an ass. It was a ton of fun... thanks again, Colin. Can’t wait to share it with my people.

Kenneth Koepnick

I really wanna chat with Dagan about toys, too. Every time they talk toys on the show I wanna jump through & join in. I’d love to get them at the shop sometime, even.

Kenneth Koepnick

Thanks! The Toy Department is our episode. The one where Zach sees the unproduced LJN Slaughter & gets goosebumps

Great episode Colin! Thank you. My parents are coming to visit and they’re bringing boxes of my old crap. Not that it’s worth anything but like you said, nostalgia is powerful. Thank you for what you do!

I love the small business themed fireside chats. Great to hear that a bricks and mortar store can really add value. As an aside, I’ve always wanted to start collecting Lego but my favourite sets are just too expensive to justify it.

Great podcast! Kenneth you did a good job! I live in Cincinnati and will be visiting your store soon!

I was going to skip this episode of Fireside Chats because I've never had any interest in toys or toy collecting, even when I was a child. I was more into sports, reading and video games. I listened to it though, last night, because I was caught up on everything else and I'm so glad that I did. It was such an interesting episode. One of my favourites to date and it got me intrigued enough to watch the first season of The Toys That Made Us on Netflix today.
