Castlevania Anniversary Collection Review -- CLS Side Quest

Spanning eight games released across five pieces of hardware over a nearly decade (including a spinoff never launched in the west), the Castlevania Anniversary Collection delivers the goods when it comes to high quality retro content, with far more attention paid to frills and extras when compared to Castlevania Requiem. But where's the Platinum Trophy?! All footage in this video review was captured by CLS off of a PS4 Pro at 1080p60. The copy of Castlevania Anniversary Collection utilized for this review was provided to CLS by Konami free of charge and ahead of release. I'm definitely buying this. I can't wait till I get to Death so I can break my TV after chucking my controller because of those damn scythes

Marius Skarsem Pedersen

Bought it the other day, but haven't had time to play yet. Never finished any of these games, but really enjoyed what I've played here and there over the years. The music is my favorite part of these games, I think. And the creepy atmosphere they made, even with the primitive graphics.

I found it to be not to difficult with the cross. Just let them fly and attack him. Wasn’t as hard as I remembered it, Dracula was tougher than I remember

John Lynch

Excellent review Colin. I’m with you on the platinum, it makes zero sense especially when you consider the arcade classics had one. You mentioned you don’t remember the game big ones being as difficult as you found them to be, but what about quality? I typically remember Castlevania Adventure to be considered absolute trash although as a kid I remember enjoying it

Ryan Murdoch

Gonna get this this weekend. Disappointed in the trophies though, there are save srates ?

Joshua McGee

Absolutely love this. Already almost finished with Super Castlevania IV, then next is bloodlines. Much like you Colin, I know I finished bloodlines as a child but I vaguely remember it. Pretty sure I haven’t even played it since finishing it on Genesis 😱

So this collection includes all nes, snes, Genesis and the gameboy games?

Bobby Bell

Got it Friday! I am having a blast on my spare time. I hear ya on the Platinum gripe though. I was looking forward to that challenge.

LastStandMedia

It's not great, and I likewise remember it being much better. But it's a launch-era Game Boy game, and since the sequel runs so much better and is so much more thoughtful, I imagine they figured it out the second time around.

LastStandMedia

I actually found brand new copies of Bloodlines at Toys 'R' Us in the summer of 2000, and that was the first time I ever played the game. I remember thinking it was good, but after playing it here, it's really very, very good. Great, even.

LastStandMedia

Almost all of them, but not quite. SNES' Dracula X isn't in this collection, nor Game Boy's Castlevania Legends.

Ryan Murdoch

Cool. Cheers for the speedy reply Col. Loping forward to kid drac, and my personal favourite, simons quest.

GameSimp

I’m a baby (19 years old) and I’m so excited to play this

Nate McKinney

Looking forward to playing Blodlines again, it was the only Castlevania game I played before SOTN. (I had a Genesis growing up.) What I'd really love is a collection of the GBA/DS Metroidvania games from the 2000's. Think it'll ever happen?

tejotl

Happy for Castlevania fans - I personally have no connection with this series but I do hope this opens up a path for more Konami collections and maybe remakes (MGS!)

West Seneca Savage

Loving the collection. Is using save states cheating? I’m only using them at the beginning of a new stage. Is this acceptable or am I a dirty cheater???

LastStandMedia

I started using them too, particularly in the Game Boy games. I don't think there's any shame in it. I'm not 8 or 10 years old anymore. I can't dedicate my entire day to a four stage platformer.

LastStandMedia

Well, we get Contra this summer, and then hopefully more from there. Not only MGS, but the original Metal Gear games would also be fun to have.

Brandon Soto

Terrible trophy list. Beat hard game 1 - Bronze. Beat hard game 2 - Bronze. 🤦🏽‍♂️
