I love hockey. It's my favorite sport, and -- having grown up playing it -- it's the one I relate to the most. You also may have noticed that I love Japan. So when it comes to today's episode of Fireside Chats, you'll have to indulge me. Meet Chase Matteo. Chase is a college kid from Maine, and he's a talented collegiate hockey player, too. But he doesn't play for UMaine, or UNH, or even my beloved Northeastern University. Instead, he plays for Waseda University in Tokyo, Japan, and he's the only westerner on the team. Today's episode is about his journey from west to east, about what it's like to live and go to school in Japan as a westerner, and about hockey as a growing sport in parts of the world you may never have thought possible.

This sounds like a fascinating topic. It must be such a joy to do this podcast because of all the different people you get to talk to and things you get to learn.

As a fellow hockey lover and Japanophile this excites me!

Go Leafs Go! ;)

Really enjoyed this episode. Hockey has been my favorite sport since I was a kid. As a fan in AZ, I always enjoy hearing different perspectives on the game as it is different here too. Long live the kachina coyote!

Great episode! Glad to see another foreigner’s perspective living in Japan and I appreciated the shout out from my time on Fireside Chats :) Even though we’re the same age, Chase definitely comes from a different world than me and I really found it interesting hearing what it’s like playing hockey for a Japanese team. I wish him the best whether he decides to stay in Japan or ends up working in the States.

This is a topic that if it were any other show, I’d skip it. But having just finished it, the streak continues: I’ve never heard a bad/boring episode of Fireside Chats. Chase did a great job, and Colin, it’s always great listening to you speak on a topic you love.

This episode just makes me want a weekly NHL podcast from Colin :( I know he isn’t very busy, so might as well add a new show to the agenda..

This was a super cool episode! I have a similar yet so incredibly different experience. I grew up playing hockey (Toronto boy, GO LEAFS GO) and stopped in high school. After university i started teaching ESL in South Korea, and discovered the Korean hockey scene! I got back into hockey while living in Korea! I am back home, and playing with the equipment i purchased while living there. Anyways, great episode yet again!!

Growing up in Michigan during the 90’s I was a huge fan of the Red Wings. I remember playing hockey a bunch growing up but then just kinda lost interest later as I got into basketball. Listening to this episode brought back a lot of those memories and makes me want to start watching and caring about the NHL again. Too bad the season is about over now... 😕

Guess I’ll settle for Islanders-centric tweets in that case. Really looking forward to it come playoffs. Let’s go blues :D

Trent Miller

Maybe I’ll cheer for the Islanders as the Wings are eliminated from the playoffs 😆

Hey Colin! Thanks again for the opportunity to record with you! Can’t tell you how much I appreciate it. Glad to hear people enjoyed the topic =) Ive been back in Japan a little over a month now playing Hockey and my classes just started back up again yesterday. P.S. I have the Bruins meeting the Islanders in the conference finals in my bracket! #LeafsReallyDoSuck

Greetings from Buffalo, NY. I'm a huge fan of all your podcasts and your YouTube channel. My absolute favorite podcast is Knockback with you and Dagan. But anyways this is a hockey podcast. I'm a huge Buffalo Sabres fan (we have sucked recently), but I will be rooting for your Islanders in the playoffs this year. Matthew Barzal is one of my favorite players in the league. So underrated. My favorite player of all time started with the Islanders, Pat Lafontaine. Thanks for your awesome content. Go Isles

Good episode, I enjoyed the insight into hockey even though I barely know anything about it to start with. Although the costs to entry seem very high versus say soccer where you literally only need a ball and a few sweaters to make goalposts (one of the main reasons it’s the worlds most popular sports). My only criticism was that I would have liked to hear more about Chase’s life in Japan and interactions with all things Japanese. I love all things Japanese though so I’m biased.

LastStandMedia

Well, hopefully we can have him back on and he can tell us how life is outside of the rink. =)

Chase Wriston Matteo

I'll be back in LA in 2020 and if the opprutunity presents itself I would be ecstatic to come back on the show and talk more about the nitty gritty of Japan etc. I hope you give hockey a shot Jeremiah! Right now the best hockey of the year is being played so you should throw it on one night if you get the chance!

Thanks Chase, I’ll give it a watch on tv at the very least (not very prominent on the tv schedule in Ireland though). Best of luck with your final college season.
