Onimusha: Warlords Review (2019 Re-Release) -- CLS Side Quest

Back in early 2001, Capcom’s Onimusha: Warlords was a welcome addition to a PlayStation 2 launch window library that had a lot of choices, but not many great (or even good) ones. By melding Resident Evil-like vibes, hack-and-slash gameplay, light RPG elements, and alternate Japanese history, Onimusha was impressive for its time, and now that it’s been re-released on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, it seems appropriate to reassess the game from a critical perspective. Indeed, Onimusha’s reemergence on the scene -- even if only in the form of a slightly retouched port -- is a healthy reminder that tastes and expectations steadily change. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. All Onimusha: Wardlords footage in this video review was captured by CLS off of a PS4 Pro. The copy of Onimusha: Warlords played for this review was provided by Capcom to CLS free of charge and ahead of its release date. PRETENTIEUX

Great review Colin. I loved this game when it came out. I never got around to the re-release.

I ended up getting the Genma Edition from Japan through PlayAsia. Can't wait!

Watching this has made me realize I’ve really gotta get back to Nioh 😕 88 hours in and Monster Hunter World totally derailed me. Nioh seems like in a lot of ways, to be the delivery of Onimusha’s original promises. It’s been a while since I’ve played Onimusha (when it launched on PS2... as I’m sure every kid our age did), but I remember Nobunaga Oda being the villain and while he’s not the main villain in Nioh, he is A villain. Both games weave Japanese history, with Japanese mythology and have a similar mix of grounded samurai-weapons based combat and magic. The main difference being tight, modern Team Ninja combat, a controllable camera, a massive spike in difficulty and a focus on gear grinding. I can only imagine that Nioh is harder and significantly longer- as I can’t imagine even the most skilled speed runner getting through Nioh’s grind in 4 hours.

I’m kinda fine with it only being 4 hours long. That means I can beat it before RE2

I'm excited to have play Onimusha again and enjoyed the half hour I played last night, but I'm so bummed the original music is tied up in legal nonsense.

desperateLuck

Ooo, I like the easy trophy list

If you need any boss strategies, just look up “Marc Souls” on the Side Quest Facebook page - over half the game is in the bag in video format (and I hardly ever use the block button, so everything you learn from me will be timing 😂)

Yeah read about the "Japanese Beethoven" for an interesting story if you get a few minutes.

What I loved about this series is that it was the perfect combination of traditional Resident Evil and Devil May Cry. Great blend of survival horror and action. I'm glad that Capcom is testing the waters with this series because I really do want it to come back. With that being said, I would love to have seen this game get the "Resident Evil: REmake" treatment. Here's hoping for more Onimusha in the near future!

Loved this game so much.... scared to go back and tarnish the memory.

Onimusha is definitely a missing link, in a way, between Devil May Cry and Resident Evil, though Devil May Cry was originally supposed to be a Resident Evil game, so... maybe there's no missing link at all. What I love is Inafune's subtle influence on Onimusha, specifically with the weapons, and using them in different ways and on different enemies.

You know, I agree with your sentiment that the nature of this port reminds you of Castlevania Requiem. With that said, do you feel that the barebones treatment on Onimusha is less glaring since this game/franchise has not been made as available to us as much as SOTN has? Man, playing through this makes me want to play through 2 and Dawn of Dreams again.. (played the hell out of 3 in college).

LastStandMedia

Yeah, in a way it's more understandable. It's certainly common for games of its era to be released as-is.

Joeystick

I never really got to play this, but I like the resident evil style camera. I think this game is better suited for the Switch

John Fazio

This was a very insightful and informative video about a game I missed the first time around, thanks

Joeystick

Only downfall is that there are no trophies or achievements 😭

Tyson Williams

Even though there may be some ps2 clunk I really enjoy filling my gaming history gaps so I’ll definitely check it out hopefully soon

LastStandMedia

It doesn't require a big time investment, so it's definitely worth playing from that perspective.
