Just when things seemed to be going swimmingly for Square Enix, bad news strikes: Not only has most of Final Fantasy XV's DLC been cancelled, but the game's director -- one of their most vital employees -- has left the company. Combined with a $33 million loss over the past six months, the famous Japanese publisher may not be in fighting shape. We discuss. Plus: Red Dead Redemption 2 keeps selling huge, Activision is disappointed with Destiny 2's performance, Supermassive Games is still in the PlayStation exclusive fold, and Colin wonders aloud if he's going senile. Oh, and should Twisted Metal go Battle Royale? That's just one of the many listener questions we answer, too. So come one, come all! Let's get nerdy.

Hey Colin - no side quest this week? Not sure if I missed any announcement.

Tyson Williams

Ya boi Colin M. still killin it with the titles

Cameron O'Neill

I think an extremely close relationship between Sony and Square Enix would benefit both companies because Square has the franchises and Sony has the development/management talent. Sony injects some cash and development talent while Square gives PlayStation exclusivity for maybe 10 years. I firmly believe that having an 9< game on just the PlayStation consoles is better than have a 7< game on every console both critically and finically.

Tetris Effect VR with headphones is a great way to "zone out". I haven't played the flat screen version for comparison, but this game makes Tetris fun again.

Zack E

You should implement a history segment into Sacred Symbols episodes. Maybe just quick 4-5 min dive into a topic related to PlayStation, or the industry in general. I really think the first 20 minutes or so of the PlayStation Knockback Episode, where you give a great lesson of the origins of PlayStation, is one of the best things you’ve done with CLS. Your short discussion of Tetris in this episode reminded me of that episode. I think it’d be very interesting if you could incorporate that sort of discussion into the Sacred Symbols format, as a specific dedicated reoccurring segment. I know you have Side Quest which occasionally does something like this, but I think you are best at this sort of thing when it’s a conversation with another individual.

Zack E

I believe he was originally planning on not having a Side Quest last week, but then the Blizzard Diablo fiasco happened, so he postponed the week off to this week and did an episode last week instead.

Justin Marxer

Be careful with that Tetris Effect. My wife and I downloaded it thinking we would drop maybe an hour into it; since I have clocked 11 hours and she has put down five.

Dave Carsley

I know it's hard to find time, but Chris should really make an effort to get back to Horizon: Zero Dawn. It's one of those few games which, once you get good at the combat, can make you feel like a total bad ass. Actually, Doom (2016) is one of them also. Many games strive, but few deliver, to give players that feeling where you always feel as if you've *barely* made it through a large encounter, and that less of an "amazing gamer" would not have; that feeling where the last enemy falls and you - alone in your living room - toss up your fist and yell "FUCK YEAH BITCH!!"... Doom and Horizon both nail this.

William

Just as an FYI to Android users, I've used the app "Pocket Casts" for about 6 years now and I absolutely love it. It's compatible with Android, IOS and Windows (and Mac I believe). It's a couple of bucks but it's well worth it. Great interface, great performance and has some cool features like syncing across all platforms, offline play, the ability to queue up podcasts and custom playlists. Check it out if Google Play has been giving you issues.

I am so upset about FF XV cancelling its DLC...It was really the last hope for me that the game could somehow become what I wanted, which would have been more inline with the original reveal trailer from 2006. Sadly, the game just never felt like that original reveal, and while it was a good game, it really missed the mark imo. anyways, I've been dreading hearing Colin's opinion on this lololol I know he's about to go IN on Square...and rightfully so lol Edit: No need to worry. he was characteristically chill about the whole thing. *phew*

LastStandMedia

Remember: Square Enix's biggest hit this year was a Nintendo exclusive. They'd never isolate themselves from any publisher.

LastStandMedia

Thank you for your feedback! While we have some sort of loose organization for the show, we don't have too many segments. I think keeping things organic and talking about things as, if, and when they come up makes the most sense.

Drew Sleezer

I love Discord, all my friends moved away after college and its a wonderful way for us to connect, hangout and play games together.

George

Omg, you are hilarious! Just got to "I have to confess to you: I don't know what Discord is" and I can't stop laughing.

Joey Finelli

Playstation All stars battle royale!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dave Carsley

For a long time, I've been really wanting a Revolutionary War game. But also and especially, I'd LOVE a Civil War game. Maybe nobody could touch these because one requires patriotism (which is apparently no longer cool) and one is fraught with race issues, but think about it: How amazing could someone like Rockstar be at telling the emotional, sad, destructive, brother-vs-brother story of the American Civil War??

Dan Parsons

I think this is my favorite episode yet, you two have a fantastic chemistry now - and long may it continue.

Korey Burns

Keep that Until Dawn love going! That was one of the original titles I saw on PS4 before I had one that made me super jealous. So happy I got to play it finally!

Brett Carlson

Colin Prima Games closing really hits home for me. I am an avid collector of collectors edition games along with their collectors edition strategy guides. I love the production value of these guides seeing as my profession for 5 years was in graphics. Prima makes a ton of the collectors guides so I wonder if this means collectors guides are going along with them.

Brett Carlson

Hey cloin wanted to know what you think about next gen? It stands to reason for some reason that as generation comes to a close and changes over that the loser swings to the winners spot. I think all these moves Microsoft is making are fantastic. Buy in reality what all these move do is bring Xbox on even footing in the future with what playstation is currently. With the top tier talent Sont has making AAA games and the seemingly quiet dominance of playstation now, I think next gen we are in for a true head to head showdown all generation long. A throwback to console wars of old. Nothing better for gamers then the 1 titans of the gaming industry both firing on all cylinders. Brace Yourself.

Matthew Clarkson

https://youtu.be/_fQtxKmgJC8 listening at work but had to stop and share this link the story of Tetris is really crazy you had most of it down but still thought I’d share lol

Glad to hear that my Vita made it to them. I hope they burn it real good.

Aaron Trahan @AaronMadeULaugh

I wonder if PlayStation Now’s monetary success could be tied to its price? Game Pass is only $10 per month and PlayStation Now is $20 per month, so Microsoft would have to have twice as many subscribers to make the same amount of money.

Phillip Guglielmo

I flew out of Australia safely 12 months ago, so I can assure you it's safe to travel here without fear of no return. Plus I've only had my face eaten by a spider twice in 28 years, so when you look at those numbers you can see it's reasonably safe overall!

Anonymous

PlayStation Now is truly awesome. It's such a convenient way to play games if you have the appropriate internet speed. It's been a slow burn but eventually, as more people try it I think they'll realize streaming is the way to go. The library is huge! Backward compatibility is not an issue obviously and playing games is quick and easy. Not having to wait for a game to install before I play it has changed my life. It's never been easier to catch up on old games. I can't wait until they give their full support and release all of their licensed games on the platform and make new games available on day one.

Brandon Soto

Final Fantasy 7 Remake was never real. It was all made up

bk200jj

I love when Colin goes off on taxes. It's infuriating to think about how many hands are in our pockets and we go to jail if we don't comply. It's insane and I can't understand how anyone can be okay with it.

Philip Andersen

Discord, your modern IRC with voice chat basically. It’s what I wished IRC always was.

Yuushin

Because I feel the game never gets enough love I need to mention Ffxiv. Fourteen has consistently growing since launch on ps4 and to Chris' thoughts on mmo and story does a unbelievable job. They way it handles the fact there is others is that you are the ultimate hero (the story is about you the warrior of light) and the other players are just gifted adventures but not you. To be honest Ffxiv has been story first, mmo second. Also Colin it is a medieval Final Fantasy game with "lack" of technology (the empire is more advanced and the lost Allagens had massive technology but they are gone)

Gavvyn

You didn’t mention me in the credits

Tyson Williams

I’m still down with the turkey for our national bird

LastStandMedia

There was some random Civil War shooter on Xbox 360 like 10 years ago. Can't think of the name of it. But yeah. The game idea I've actually carried with me for a very long time is Revolutionary War-themed. Maybe I'll get to make it one day. (Doubtful!)

LastStandMedia

I checked, and you're right! I used the October credits for some reason. (Well, the reason is that I'm constantly taking shit from the previous episode and copying it to the new timeline.) The new credits should be reflected in Fireside Chats, KnockBack, and Sacred Symbols moving forward (beginning with Friday's RDR2 episode). Thank you for your patience! It was a mistake on my end.

Kenneth Oms

Great episode as always. Col you should let Chris know that the last driver game which is just like GTA was set in the 70s and the Scarface game which is just like gta is set kinda in the same era as well

Rick Lewis

Hey Colin, you mention that you need a reason to get out your PSVR. It would include buying a peripheral, but FarPoint with the Aim controller is one of the best video game experiences I've ever had. The controller is absolutely perfect and it's a shame that it isn't used for more games. It's like having a light gun with VR, everything we could have wanted as kids, but it is barely even utilized beyond that game.

LastStandMedia

That game looks dope, but I don't know if I can have another peripheral in my life. I would probably just play with Move controllers (I assume you have to).

Jeremy Craves

Speaking of PS Now and Red Dead Redemption 1. I believe you could play it on PC through PS Now.

Jonathan Figueiredo

After a crappy day, hearing my last name butchered on this show was the best thing I could ask for to brighten it up. Thanks for reading my comment!

Great episode! Two quick thoughts: 1. Your talk on taxes got me thinking of the absurd, if the United States did away with taxes was instead funded by one central Patreon account, what do you think the most ridiculous tier name and its respective reward (for it's backers) would be? 2. Proof you're going senile -> posting the Episode 21 thread on a Wednesday ;P Take care and thank you for all the hard work you put into the most engaging Playstation podcast there is.

Anonymous

it's funny hearing colin mention vons rotisserie chicken. i work at one at the moment and i swear we sell that and french bread more than candy and soda. but its mostly old people that buy them. lol

LastStandMedia

Well, I'm an 80 year old man in a 34 year old man's body, so that makes perfect sense to me.

LastStandMedia

Yeah, I accidentally posted (then deleted!) the Episode 21 thread. Patreon is rolling out new publishing tools, and they have me all confused, 'cause I'm so used to doing things a certain way. C'est la vie.

James Galos

With all the Red Dead I’ve been playing and being from California I’d love to play a game during the Gold Rush. There is a wealth of stories and wild characters you can build off to make a great game with some historical accuracy

Jason Bolla

Glad to hear you guys aren't affected by the fires down there. We moved from Paradise just a couple months ago, but the smoke is insane up here. Looks like the place we lived actually survived though. Great episode as always!

Brett Carlson

Dont know if you have heard but Sony is skipping E3 for the foreseeable future and I think this news is a great sign. Shows that Sony is focused on the fans and the core gamer. Now PSX will be a community event where we can always expect massive announcements. Playstation has always felt like a community and Sony pulling away from the masses to focus on homegrown events that can be shared with the people who actually play the games is a refreshing take. As I predicted I think Next Gen Sony will double down on Top Tier carefully curated exclusives and that will be their brand and messaging. I know you always said exclusives dont sell hardware Colin, but as a lifelong Sony fan I can say that's why I play here. Xbox and PC can keep the cool multiplayer stuff. I come to playstation for the stories.

Tyler

Chris, shut your mouth about Twisted Metal! Just kidding. But seriously, that franchise is so good! Bring it back!

MeatSpin11

For real. So many great characters that just didn’t land an audience.

Jason Bolla

Yup. Most deadly and destructive fire in CA history and it's still going.

James Galos

Maybe in 2030 when I retire I can play that scenario in Red Dead 3

Brett Carlson

Colin, really puzzled by a lot of the response I have been seeing on Playstation backing out of E3. How is this viewed as a negative? They knew the announcement would grab headlines and get people talking, is it really that farfetched to think they have a plan? Lol. This generation is coming to a close. They have 4 huge first party games left to drop and already have deals with activion and Rockstar etc.. for 3rd party titles to carry the ps4 to the finish line. This move with E3 is all about setting us up for PS5. Would wager heavily PS5 is announced around E3 and shown off at a huge PSX event in the fall where they have the playstation fans in attendance and can speak directly to there consumers and show off the new hardware for a 2020 release. Horizon 2 will be a game shown off as a launch window game for PS5. Just my opinion

Andrew

I'm not surprised Sony won't be at E3... How many times can you show Days Gone etc? I feel like Sony is just in a holding pattern now. They've destroyed this gen, their main focus now is releasing all of the games they've announced already like Days Gone, Last of Us II while probably finalizing the PS5 and trying to determine what games that are in the pipeline will be ready for launch. That's my impression. It'd be stupid to hint at games or announce games now that may come out for the PS5 as well. I think they get more bang for their buck showing those games when they announce the PS5 because they can do the Xbox one x strategy and be like "this is how much better your games will look on the PS5" by having a side by side comparison. I'm rambling. Great podcast! Looking forward to the next one as always

MeatSpin11

Thanks for the battle royale reading! If Sony takes the idea just throw me in a #ColinWasRight Like I said, I think this kills two birds with one stone. TM fans get another game and Sony has a possible BR hit.

So this episode won't be coming on sound cloud and Google Podcasts ?

Evan Erickson

Not showing up for me on Google Podcast either. It's available on Google Play though which is usually the service I have not issues with. I prefer Google Podcasts so you can listen at faster than 1x

LastStandMedia

It all depends on your viewpoint, and how you view tactics versus strategy, which are two very different things. We'll get into it on the next episode.

LastStandMedia

The new RSS link isn't being read by some Google and Google-aligned modules. We've reached out to them, but there's nothing else we can really do about it. It worked immediately literally everywhere else, as of last week. It's fine on iTunes, Stitcher, and just about everywhere else you can imagine. But Google? Of course not. This is a pretty common problem, apparently, and you'd think they'd fix it, but I'm not holding my breath. I'm gonna send out a small MP3 this weekend through SoundCloud that will be picked up by anyone having issues that'll let 'em know that the show is still going, and they may need to find an alternate way to listen until Google cleans things up on their end. Sorry that there's no more I can do about it!

Jessica Gutiérrez

Are you no longer uploading to Soundcloud?

Andrew

one negative for the side by side comparison idea that I mentioned is, it can obviously piss off a certain portion of PS4 owners. Perhaps new owners of the console, or gamers that don't have a lot of disposable income and will feel "cheated" playing a game that doesn't potentially run as well, or look as good as the PS5 version. I remember people losing their minds over Assassin's Creed Black Flag, and I think Tomb Raider at the start of this gen because they were on both consoles...(I think Tomb Raider was. I know Black Flag was)

Haydyn

Couldn't agree more about games set during conflicts such as Afghanistan. A mate of mine is an Australian Afghanistan veteran and I've started writing short fiction loosely based on his experiences. There are thousands of stories begging to be told, I've always wanted a game where you play as an Afghani soldier fighting against the Taliban.

John Lynch

Another great episode. Touching off another patrons question. I really don’t think we will get another FF tactics. Not sure why, unless I’m mistaken even though the GBA titles weren’t what fans of the originals wanted they were good and I believe they sold well. I’d love to see a new one on switch because I don’t believe there’s any chance of something similar to the original

LastStandMedia

I think we'll definitely get another one. What I fear is that Square Enix makes it totally AAA, 3D, $100 million budget, and forgets what made the original so special to begin with.
