Great games. Shockingly lazy presentation.

Castlevania Requiem Review -- CLS Side Quest

In bringing Rondo of Blood and its beloved sequel Symphony of the Night to PlayStation 4, Castlevania Requiem deserves praise. But Konami’s blatantly lazy approach to actually making its collection pop is certainly a head-scratcher. Sure: 2D Castlevania is almost always a good thing. But in a world where Konami’s rival Capcom is putting lots of love and attention into its retro collections, Castlevania Requiem ultimately feels inadequate. All footage in this video review was captured by CLS off of a PS4 Pro. The copy of Castlevania Requiem used in this review was purchased by CLS from the PlayStation Store. Watching right now. I gotta get into castlevaina. I watched my wife get past through the first two levels on NES with no issues... it was super hot

Rejoice, ye sweet creeping evils and lavish decadent souls of the nocturnal depths of Hell.. the legend of Long Island has given us the scroll of truth!! Let us discover what lies in wait.. MuahahahahaHAA!!

Brock Thomas Walsh

Excellent coverage as always. A shame it is lacking some TLC, but I am looking forward to giving Rondo of Blood a try and finally playing SotN. With the pre order bonus on PSN, I don't feel like $15.99 or whatever it was is an unreasonable price of entry

LastStandMedia

LOL. The original is great! Also ramps up an incredible amount in difficulty. Can be beaten in 20 minutes by someone with experience, though. =)

Marc Boggio

Rondo of Blood is kind of kicking my ass. I spent the weekend in Toronto for Halloween and having my laptop with me, played through all of both normal and nightmare modes of Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon. Assuming my traditional Castlevania skills would be sharp from that, I fired up Rondo of Blood when I got home last night... and can’t seem to get through the second stage 😕 It seems patience will certainly be required for this one.

My first castlevania game was 4 on the SNES and the thing I liked most about it was that the whip was aimable. Why isn't this the case for rondo of blood despite it coming after?

Justin Marxer

C'mon, we're talking about Konami. Post Kojima, how much effort do you think they put into their properties? I mean unwrap that damn copy of Metal Gear Survive and you'll get it, Colin. Still SOTN is my favorite game of all time and won't hesitate to buy it for any platform (and haven't) since it released.

Owen

Is there save states?

Owen

Well ain’t that some bullshit. That is fuckin lazy.

Marius Skarsem Pedersen

Great review! I think I’ll just stick with the 360 version which is backwards compatible on Xbox One, though. Also, what’s a rondo?

Phillip Guglielmo

I'm playing SOTN for the first time! Hearing you speaking in tongues about this game really motivated me to give it a go, and I'm absolutely blown away at how beautiful it is. Every time I peer into the backgrounds I spot something new.

Luke Farinella

I think this was just timing with the netflix season 2

Azzan

Sweet trophies though.

Chris B

Two awesome games. I’m wondering if it will be worth it for someone like me who already has both games on PSTV (not saying how I got Rondo on there lol).

LastStandMedia

It's a tough game. The knockback (!) is rough, you can barely take any damage... I do find it a bit easier as Maria, though she can take even less damage, so...

LastStandMedia

There's something intriguing about Metal Gear Survive... like... I'm probably gonna like it if I ever get around to playing it. LOL.

Justin Marxer

Let's just say this, the map is a total rehash of the Africa map from Phantom Pain and the survival mechanics are kinda silly, buuuuut, there is a rather hypnotic flow to the game, so you may end up enjoying it (if you ever open it).

LastStandMedia

"A musical form with a recurring leading theme, often found in the final movement of a sonata or concerto."

LastStandMedia

Could be... but with so much plot emphasis (seemingly) on the original trilogy, you'd think they'd port the NES games instead...

I’ve never played a castlevania game but I’ll think I’ll give it a go. The castlevania series on Netflix got me interested along with your joy of it

Joey Rawlings

I'm in the same boat; I don't recall ever going near Castlevania as a kid (I'm the same age as Colin), but I'd rather spend a bit of money on the Requiem game and give it a shot since I also enjoyed the Netflix series. Who knows, I might just say that #ColinWasRight once again. :)

John Lynch

Colin, just Curious what you thought of Lament Of Innocence for PS2? I never played that one and honestly I just wish Konami would put out every castlevania game again. I’d buy them all at full price lol. I just don’t really have the space or means to go out and start buying retro consoles

LastStandMedia

I remember liking it, but that was a very long time ago. Haven't played it since college-ish.

Marc Boggio

Alright, I have git’n gud and I beat Rondo of Blood with Richter (proof can be found on my YouTube channel, YouTube.com/marcboggio) - I was never given the option to play as Maria. I have a feeling I missed a secret. ...this isn’t over, is it? 😔 (I also may have fired up my retrofreak console and played a bit of Castlevania III and Super Castlevania IV, because man... once this series sinks its teeth in... whoooooo boy 😕. It may also be because weed is legal in Canada now and 8/16bit pixel art just works in that state... it works so nicely ☺️)

After saving Grant, I wasn’t sure if I was doing the right thing heading back down the clock tower. I googled it and the first thing that came up was a Gamefaq you wrote in 2002. I made it to the bottom of the tower thanks to young Colin 👍
