Two hours in and I don't want to stop.

Hey colin, are you reviewing Castlevania Requiem?

Ryan B.

Thanks for your work on this Colin. Excellent review but the game seems remarkably unremarkable to me... pretty, but a boring snooze fest of the same tropes as the first. I, too, am interested in the period depicted and what might have been sacrificed collectively in the transition to late modernity, but I’d rather read Cormac McCarthy’s border trilogy for that type of anti enlightenment sentiment. Still, having absolutely zero interest in the game, I always thoroughly enjoy your reviews.

I can appreciate that. I'm truly of the mind that this sort of game isn't for everyone. Not even all open world fans. It's slow and deliberate, which I like a great deal.

I like the slow burn when a) I’m in the mood for it and b) I’m somewhat convinced the payoff will be worth it. I thought the first one, which I played through in its entirety, just wasn’t very fun. At least not enough to justify this kind of time investment (I’m 36 and work full time as well as graduate school). And like you, I was pretty disappointed with GTA V on the whole... As an older gamer, what attracts me most to the medium usually has to do with the opportunity to actively participate in a compelling narrative. I’m sure Red Dead 2 has its moments, but I feel like the first one telegraphed all its essential story beats by the end of the first act and whatever followed was generally either anti climactic or clichéd af. Still, love the content Colin. You are hands down the best reviewer I’ve come across and I’ve been eagerly anticipating your thoughts on games for the better part of the last decade. My generally negative disposition towards the game has nothing to do with you. I particularly enjoyed your discussion of horse bonding (my girlfriend rides) and it instantly recalled John Grady.

This is the kind of game I could get lost in for several months, and I feel that's a testament to how they put so much thought into it. Just a few hours in, but I feel like I'm watching a very good western which is a genre of film that I'm not even a fan of, but the acting is too superb not to get sucked in.

Dusted off my PS4 for this. I still want to play gow4 but it was this game that piqued my interest enough to play again. I have just played a little of it and it’s really something. I love how raw it is. The characters feel authentic if not stylized after westerns of old. It’s amazing what can happen when a studio has total artistic freedom and enough f-you money to back it up.

The Fuck You Money is key, I think. They can take their time, throw 1,000+ people at the project over six or seven years, and voila! Amazing game. Then they made $750 million in three days, more than recouping the entire cost of development and marketing. Must be nice. =)
