You may know today's guest, Lauren Chen, by her digital pen-name (of sorts): Roaming Millennial. Lauren was born in Hong Kong, moved to Canada as a kid, and heavily engages in politics both at home and in the United States, primarily through her YouTube channel and through her work on CRTV. So naturally, I invited her for a Fireside Chat all about the political climate in The Age of Trump. As a Christian and a social conservative, Lauren and I come down on the opposite side of quite a few issues, but we also found plenty of agreement. In discussing her faith, women's choice, transgender rights, and more, we investigated quite a few interesting topics of note, and prove that conservatism does indeed come in many shapes and sizes.

I know it wasn’t a political debate and more of just a discussion. But I wish that you had pressed her a bit more on her answers to abortion and gay marriage. Saying I wish abortions didn’t happen and that the government shouldn’t be involved in marriage, while I agree would make a better society, isn’t the reality we live in. I felt like they were a bit of non-answers. Overall excellent episode, and even though I didn’t agree with everything said I love listening to this show to be exposed to new ideas and interesting intelligent people.

I would be interested in seeing a conversation between you and Matt Christiansen. You might reach out to him. You have both spoken with Michael Autery.

Domenico Smarto

Great episode Colin, I noticed Ben Shapiro comes up quite a bit when you have political episodes. I know he’s a very busy person, but have you ever reached out to him to come on for a fire side chat episode? I would love to hear you two have a discussion.

LastStandMedia

I'm not really interested in grilling my guests. I told her I disagreed with a number of her stances, but I don't need to go crazy with it. I'm glad you enjoyed the episode, though. Thanks for listening!

LastStandMedia

I'll look into it! I have a few more Fireside Chat recordings booked for this year, but then I'm taking the rest of the year off. I'm sitting on a bunch of 'em.

Adam Niksch

Love these types of fireside chats. They’re always very entertaining from my perspective, plus I am one of those who does miss the history and political videos from CLS prime (though I totally understand why they had to go as this is a business for you in the end). Any chance we’ll get a special fireside chat about the midterm results after they occur?

LastStandMedia

Maybe. Tiana got a job in Washington, but maybe I'll have her back if she's still around. Or perhaps Jeff.

I've said it before, but these episodes really scratch the itch that was left when CLS Prime went away. I think you're at your best with a guest, and even more so when you don't necessarily agree with your guest on everything. Fireside Chats continues to be your best product IMO, keep it up.

Colin should come over to Louder with Crowder #ChangeMyMind

Her use of Advil gets an official Canadian Army Medic seal of approval 👍 The only things left to do are hydrate and change socks. Good episode, Lauren is great

I listened to this episode last night at work and I loved hearing it. This is my first exposure to Lauren Chen and a lot of my family share the same political views as her. Almost everyone in my family is socially conservative and while I'm socially liberal, I still get along with everyone. My dad is one of the most conservative men that I know, but we never let our politics get in the way. I don't understand why more people can't have peaceful and candid conversations with others of opposing political views. This is one of the many reasons why I like you, Colin, and why I have followed you from IGN circa 2011 to Kinda Funny to CLS. Keep doing you and now I'll go check out Lauren's Youtube channel. Have a great day!

I'm so pleased that you're enjoying Fireside Chats. I'm having a blast doing it. Thank you for listening!

LastStandMedia

He actually invited me right when I left KF, and I couldn't make scheduling work, and then I never heard back from him. LOL.

LastStandMedia

Thanks, James! I'm glad our conversation resonated with you. It was great to chat with Lauren, and I hope to have her back on the show again soon.

tejotl

Would you be interested in getting on his show now? Can imagine it would be a drag to go again through the KF story - would rather see you guys have a conversation about civil discourse and media in general tbh

Peter Campbell

Really enjoyed this conversation. I have seen her talk to a few other people I pay attention to. While I'm on the other side I am pretty interested in hearing a different view.

I enjoyed the podcast as always! Well, i greatly disagreed with Lacey, and now i greatly disagree with Lauren lol. I guess I'm just a centrist lol. A couple things though: 1. I keep hearing that Democrats are going socialist, but I look at Seattle, one of the most liberal cities in the union and socialist agendas are being widely defeated. Bernie Sanders was/is a niche politician i feel. He has hardcore supporters but they aren't anywhere close to a Democrat majority. 2. I feel like so many people are missing the boat on why Trump won and why barring something dramatic won't win again. Voter turnout. Specifically left leaning voters. Soooo many people hated Hilary. Going from Obama to Hilary was a naseaus thought for tons of people. Voting for Trump was a non-starter. So they flat out didn't vote. I can't tell you how many people i know didn't vote at all out of protest or disgust of their options, figuring Hillary would easily win without their vote. These same people now fully regret making that choice and can't wait to vote in 2020 to get Trump out. This is literally half my office. I just don't understand the rights arrogance on Trump. He literally won around %26 of the registered voting populace. On top of that only %30 of Americans are registered voters. My point is, there is a lot of regret out there. In 2008 Obama got alot of newcomers voting out of excitement. I sincerely believe in 2020 Trump turn out the vote due to pure vitriol. Also, her statement that we live in a post-racial era is naive at best. Obama's election showed how far we have come. Charlottesville, what just happened in Pennsylvania and more shows how far we have to go. That said, i'm sure as shit not on the anti-white bandwagon. Anyways, great show. Your awesome. Keep up all the great work and i hope the entire family is well! Now I'm on to listen to KnockBack 😁. The crown jewel of my week.

LastStandMedia

There's no denying that a civil war is brewing in the Democratic party. I'm not convinced the moderates will win. I'm glad you're more confident. I'm of the mind that Trump simply can't win reelection, and so he won't try. But we'll see how it plays out!

strawhatninja

As a fellow Christian and Conservative myself, I really enjoyed hearing you two discuss things that you mostly would disagree on. I think I am in the minority saying that I love hearing/discussing things like this with people who don't agree with me. I always try and have an open mind and even if I disagree with someone you have to show respect to them and their opinion.

LastStandMedia

I'm glad you're liking this episode. Boy oh boy are you gonna like the one I recorded today... though it likely won't go live 'til December.

Tyson Williams

My views on transgender issues have probably fluctuated more than any of my other views, that and abortion, I really feel like my stance on abortion changes every minute lol

Tyson Williams

I just realized she went to BYU around the same time as my sister Edit: oh shit I’m interested to see the episode with the guy to talk about Mormonism, I’m ex-mormon but it’s kinda idk weird how most people know very little about the religion I was raised in or what they know isn’t accurate

Barrett Boswell

I greatly appreciate the hard work you put in and the guests you have on the show. You and I agree on most of the fiscal and economical views. We differ on quite a few of the social stances but I truly enjoy hearing your viewpoint and why you have them. I haven't checked if you have a guest specializing in environmental sciences in the past but I would be intrigued from such a discussion in the future. In my opinion in reading of articles, I believe it is happening but I don't believe enough time/data is there to determine how much of it is caused by humans. Now I am not naive enough to think we have no effect on it but based on the accurateness/completeness of historical data, I don't buy into that we are killing ourselves quickly. You have said it's an important issue to address and I agree. Our world has limited resources so we need to find effective and efficient ways to replace them with more self sustaining/cleaner models. My biggest issue is the doomsday talk that comes along with global warming and I believe you have said in previous podcasts that kind of alarmist attitude too is uncalled for. Hopefully we get to hear this fleshed out more in the future by you and possibly another guest. Thanks again for all your hard work on this and your other podcasts Colin. It does not go unappreciated.

Tyler Bello

Hey Colin! Just wanted to let you know that Ben Shapiro has since sort of gone back on his stance on transgender, I remember the clip your talking about with him calling the trans woman "sir". Since then he has said that if he is out to lunch with a transgender person he uses their preferred pronoun.

LastStandMedia

I'd love to talk environmentalism, peak oil, green energy, etc. on the show. I just need to find someone to do it with me, or for someone from the community who is an authority on such issues to step up. I'm of a similar mind as you, I think: These are issues that need to be solved with some urgency, but it's not the end of the world... yet.

Barrett Boswell

Apologies, I didn't sound that clear in when I read my post again. Yes, we are of similar mind as that we should have cleaner replacements for historical energy sources. I guess where we may differ is I'm not sure what percentage of the warming is man-made and what is just nature itself. To some degree, I think we're going to have a major climate shift sometime in the near future and it will be regardless of what we as Earth residents do as part of our warming output but that doesn't mean we shouldn't keep trying to change in ways to keep nature looking pristine as possible.

William Sisto

Great episode! But I'm surprised that Lauren was so surprised with the homeless in Santa Monica. I lived in Hong Kong and the amount of homeless there is a little bit less then say New York City, where I live now.

LastStandMedia

To be fair, it can be a bit jarring if you don't live here. Santa Monica is beautiful, pristine, on the water... and you wouldn't expect it to have the homeless problem it does.
