The Game Devs That Could Save Star Wars -- CLS Side Quest

Under EA's guidance, Star Wars video games have been a collective disappointment, and the world-famous IP deserves better, especially in the wake of some tepidly-received films. Thing is, we have a collective need to think big, think blockbuster, and think expensive when it comes to Star Wars. But what if the Star Wars Games Universe explored the entire gamut of genres, studio sizes, budgets, and experiences? To get our minds running, here are seven studios that could make seven unique Star Wars experiences -- a fighting game, a stealth game, an arcade game, and the like -- to enrich a fictional universe that could desperately use some TLC. Very solid list. I hope someone at Disney catches wind of this and looks into at least one of these proposals. And then adequately thanks you, of course.

I'd like to see Microsoft's initiative studio do a Star Wars RPG like KOTOR, just with better combat. Give players the ability to play whoever/however they want in a really tight single player experience like kotor. The worlds you visit don't have to be huge either, just put meaningful content/exploration/dungeons. While I know BioWares MMO can give me just that, I have played it since launch, and the mmo part holds it back because it doesn't deliver on the multiplayer part very well, so you're paying monthly for a faux mmo.

A Star Wars game made like Detroit sign me up!

Damnit, I really want to listen to this episode, but I don't want to listen to this episode. There is a such a deep history of awesome Star Wars games (I think Jedi Knight is a top 10 all time PC game) and they have just refused to do anything with the IP. It actually gets me upset just talking about it.

Peter Campbell

Really enjoyed this (even though I am pretty sure I didn't vote for it.) All the games you suggest sound interesting and I agree that going smaller and into specifics rather than crazy wide is a better option. But man, still hung up on The last jedi? (I think you secretly love it)

What about a space sim, it's been a while since we had one of those....

Christopher Toffolo

Would love to see any of these projects made. Something you said rang true: "Star Wars is going for the least common denominator" (or something like that). I don't know if I have the evidence, but it feels like that's what they are going for. There's not too much weird or niche things happening in the franchise now. Would like to see more of it, and I think your suggestions here would get at that. Great job!

BM

Man the only one I could agree with you on is metro guys making a star wars fps. I would add divinity orginal sin guys making a star wars rpg.

tejotl

I have zero attachment to Star Wars movies or franchise in general apart from both KotOR games which I found to be absolutely fantastic. So from my side I'm open for an off-the-beat game that doesn't really focus on movies etc but just creates a unique story in that universe

LastStandMedia

You've got to assume The Initiative is gonna be Microsoft's Naughty Dog. Or, that's the idea, at least. So... third person action-adventure seems more likely...?

LastStandMedia

That'd be cool! I was trying to just think of some things that have never really been done... or scarcely so.

Kenneth Oms

I can accept that as a good alternative, if its like a better Jedi Knight Academy!

Christopher Toffolo

That it will! Follow up question: Do you think, moving forward, the overall meaning and power of Star Wars will diminish as it moves from a story of mythic proportions to more of a brand? Sure, we will always have the OT, but overtime it will become just a part of a bigger thing. Classic stories like The Odyssey or even stories like Frankenstein, are told and retold in different ways through different mediums. Disney has made adaptations of Cinderella, but it's just an adaptation. I think for myself: I can always separate the power of the OT with whatever else is added to the story. Going forward, I wonder if that will be the case. In 200 years, will it still be with us as a meaningful story?

David Kramme

The way Larian (Divinity 2 dev.) handles emergent game play and branching stories/side quests/ability combinations would be a dream no doubt, it is painful that it'll never happen, KOTOR boat, bounced off MMO, great video Colin, play Divinity Sin 2 already, or start a let's play through it with Chris, I'd up my pledge for that, take care and thanks for all you do!

Marc Boggio

I want to play that 4A Empire defector mercenary game so badly, that it hurts my heart 😔 (Love the Metro games, Survival Ranger difficulty is the way to play if you haven’t tried it)

Bryan Creagh

I would like to see a Star Wars fighting game but more like the heroes vs villains in Battle Front 2. Where players could play out epic battles as their favorite characters. I would like to see a whole game built around this mode.

Kevin Sullivan

Do you think Disney would allow developers to make games without concern for cannon? It would seem impossible for the to watch over development of all games behind the scenes at different studios to avoid contradictions in the universe or timeline.

LastStandMedia

No, but that's not what I'm really pitching. What I'm pitching is thinking smaller in terms of canon. A Resogun-like Star Wars game, for instance, could simply be a one-off side story, like a chapter in a book.
