Dragon Quest XI: The Return of the (Truly) Traditional JRPG -- CLS Let's Play

For many of us, Dragon Quest -- or Dragon Warrior, as we once knew it -- was our very first taste of a genre we'd come to love. But mainline releases in the popular JRPG franchise are few and far between, making the upcoming release of Dragon Quest XI in the west so special. Not since PS2's Dragon Quest VIII, which launched outside of Japan in 2005, have we received a traditional console iteration, and it's been eight years since we even had a western entrant in the series at all. So let's take a look at a small slice of DQXI about 13 hours into the 100+ hour adventure, and show you what the combat, the menus, and the systems are all about. All footage was captured by CLS on a PlayStation 4 (1080p60). Erk-Prime

Isn't there a non turn based battle system???

Cole Britt

Is this your review also?

Cole Britt

Awesome. Can’t wait to check it out this afternoon!

Erk-Prime

Like an Active battle system in the options? Where you dont select attacks? Was I imagining this watching another Square video?

Craig Carter

I love your let’s plays because you actually explain the game instead of yelling or forcing stupid shit to try and be funny. I’m very ready for this game, can’t wait to get to grinding those levels. Hope you’re well and having a good day Colin!

I've only played DQV and IX, I'm looking forward to this!

I have heard so much about this game, both you and several of the Easy Allies guys are hotly anticipating it, but your in depth look here told me what I need to know. I think it looks great, graphically, and while I am intrigued, there's just too much to catch up on/too much on the horizon for me to give this a shot. Maybe somewhere down the line. Thanks for the detailed look, Colin. Also, with two unscripted SQs in a row, can we expect a return to the usual format next time out? I enjoy them all, just wondering!

It's a huge game, and it's honestly perfect for a long break or a lull in games. I wouldn't necessarily play it this year. But, hell, next summer? It's a great game to sink time into.

So I know DQ is typically a long game, and I'm not worried about that. What I am curious about is if it falls into a problem I've noticed that JRPG makers seem reluctant to evolve from, and that is the slow start. Example Xenoblade chronicles 2 started out so slow I actually stopped playing the game completely. -- So how do you feel about the pacing of the beginning of the game and is the game well paced so far? -- I love JRPGs and I've been wanting a good one to get into, but I feel like they need to evolve on the slow beginnings.

Cole Britt

I love all your videos, but there’s something about your unscripted stuff that is my favorite content ie. Podcasts, let’s plays etc. I like to hear you off the cuff

Thank you! If you reduce CLS content to four or five hours a week, only a small fraction (maybe 10 or 15 minutes) is scripted. So you're in luck!

As a long time Dragon Quest fan, I'm happy to see this game getting stellar reviews. Suck me in for 100hrs please!

I've never played a Dragon Quest. This one is coming out to PC, so i will have to check it out.

I want to play this so bad but I have no way to play a 100 hour game I work 65-70 hours a week 😭

Pedro Escobar

for someone who played and was let down by Ni No Kuni 2, would you say DQ11 is a better game to scratch my RPG itch? never played the other games, but very tempted to give this one a try after i plow through spiderman later this month

LastStandMedia

That's hard to say. It's really a matter of what you're looking for. DQXI is very, very traditional. If you didn't like NNK2, I'm not sure you'd like DQXI.
