E3 2018: PlayStation Press Conference Review -- CLS Side Quest

PlayStation's E3 2018 press conference was a tale of two shows, with incredibly weak pacing and presentation combined with a nice display of first and third party games. There were few surprises, though, and that may just disappoint more than anything (although you should have expected it!). Thank you for burning the midnight oil to get all your reaction videos out so quickly after the conferences.

Phillip Guglielmo

Honestly, I was in fits of laughter during the pre-Ghost musical presentation. After that frustrating intermission it caught me completely off guard, and between the absurdity of the whole set up and fans losing their minds in the comment sections, I just lost it.

The intermission wouldn’t have been so bad if it wasn’t for ‘the panel’ of Sony peope. I know Clements is a friend of yours but by god they were all so boring, glaringly obvious they were simply passing time. The games shown are great and just reinforce Sony’s commitment to lead the industry. Where was Days Gone? Colin thank you for bringing your opinion to E3, I always listened for your take on the conferences when your were at KF

Brogan Wassell

I thought ghosts of sushima and control were pretty awesome. Last of us was lackluster though.

Peter Campbell

Death stranding looks wonderfully odd. It does seem very culty. I know its a game for me but will it be a big seller? I think it's going a bit weird for that, unless it has some amazing gameplay. Even then the oddness might put people off.

Britton Dowers

I want commend you on getting all of these videos out. As one man band you have done an excellent job in your coverage. I can't imagine how many hours you've put in the last few days. I've enjoyed all of the recaps. Great work.

Drew Packard

I’m really impressed with how quickly and the quality in which these review videos have been released. I don’t even care about any E3 showing outside of Nintendo but you still have me interested in knowing what’s going on. Great job!

Tony Colton

I felt soooo tense during TLOU2... Holy shit that was so good! I had no interest in GOT but now I'm hyped for that. Love the style and visuals... Stunning! The intermission was very odd but overall don't think it took away from the conference as for me they nailed all the gameplay demos. And RE2.. hell yeah! For me it was nice to see someone trying a fresh approach to E3 presser and I give Sony kudos for trying something different but please replace that panel already... They always feel way too scripted. Thanks again for the great work you have pumped out Colin u really upped your game with these videos coming out so quickly. Stellar work!

Spider man is the game i am looking forward to most this year but damn am i excited to see what PS5 looks like.

I really sum this up as Sony losing the battle (E3 2018) but tactfully so to win the start of the next war (Next gen). Microsoft couldn't have another loss on their hands, that would make it nearly 5 years running. Sony only had to play their hand that they have already shown, finish this gen strong and ready up for next gen. Sony found themselves in a really strange situation this E3, Most of the big first parties are hard at work on next gen stuff, two big hitters have JUST come out, God of War and Detriot so they can't show those, Spiderman is right around the corner. By next E3 Sony will have literally shown everything and have everyone working on next-gen so their only really play is to announce PS5. Thoughts?

Jason Stafford

Great coverage Colin! I felt a little underwhelmed by Sony's showcase, not because of the games, but the presentation. The changing of venues and intermissions just seemed unnecessary to me. It kind of felt like they were straying from the original mission of "games, games, games" into fluff that didn't really add anything. This whole thing could have been a 30 minute Nintendo-style video and it would have been a-ok. Side note: I can hardly wait for the screams of "cultural appropriation" for the guy playing the flute before the Ghost preview. LOL.

Bobby Bell

Thank you for putting these recaps together. I can easily say I'm a proud patron of CLS!

James Galos

I would say that momentum is a big deal and that is all with Microsoft right now. If Sony makes a mistake and Microsoft just stays on the same path you could see everything flip and Microsoft will be on top for the next console cycle.

Stefan Catinella

I hope this isn't another sign of SONY getting arrogant again.

LastStandMedia

Maybe it would have been better to just show a package of some new trailers... but I don't think much of anything would have justified that stupid intermission.

LastStandMedia

You think so? The thing we have to remember about TLoU2 is that it'll never have the same resonance the first one did from an excitement, we've-never-seen-this-before standpoint.

LastStandMedia

It's super bizarre, though the rumors I've been reading about the plot have been tantalizing.

LastStandMedia

Thank you so much. I'm rendering the Nintendo video as I write this comment, and I am totally shot. Ready for bed.

LastStandMedia

I think it was wise not to announce anything new from the first party front (mostly because they have nothing new to announce on PS4), but from a presentational and showmanship point of view? No bueno.

Ross Arbour

The prolonged intermission after TLOU2 was painful. But remember, it could always be worse (giant enemy crab, ridge racer, 599 US dollars anyone?). All joking aside it was interesting to see opposing tacks Sony and Microsoft took. Xbox was like a games blitzkrieg.

Justin Matkowski

During the Ghosts of Tsushima musical interlude, I literally said outloud to myself "What the hot fuck is this...." The 4 Pillar titles (and certainly RE2) all look fantastic, which is what left me kind of confused about the "1/2 Mile Up Our Own Ass" approach Sony took. PS, I'm convinced that Death Stranding is basically Kojima cleared the chamber too hard one night and literally never came back. Great coverage, my dude. You've been hustling and we all notice! :)

Andrew OLoughlin

I think you're right that they held back, which is probably a good sign for next year and beyond. But I also think they may be stretching themselves a bit too thin between E3, PSX and Paris Games Week to not engage some of the third party devs like Microsoft did. In a perfect world, they would have locked down From Software again with Bloodborne 2 to headline their announcements this year, but it seems like they missed that chance at this point. I will say I'm pretty happy that we didn't have to sit through another stale CoD or Destiny 2 DLC showing. What would you predict will highlight their e3 2019 showing at this point? Horizon 2?

strawhatninja

I feel this would easily be the best conference(conference wise and game quality wise) if not for the horrid intermission after the Last of Us.

LastStandMedia

Yeah, next year will be huge. I'm not sure. It's entirely likely that Horizon 2 is a current-gen game, since they have the engine and middleware running to make that happen somewhat quickly. Then again, you'd have to think Guerrilla is working on a launch PS5 game, and while it could be Horizon 2, I wonder if it's actually Killzone. We shall see!

LastStandMedia

Possibly. I don't think it did enough to differentiate itself from Microsoft's strong showing.
