Throughout the '80s, the Indiana Jones trilogy riveted moviegoers around the world with its tale of a cunning, adventurous archaeologist traveling the planet in search of priceless relics. Today's episode of KnockBack jumps into what makes Indiana Jones so beloved and so well-remembered, with specific sections of the show dedicated to each of the core Indy movies: Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Temple of Doom, and The Last Crusade. So grab your whip, and maybe your pistol, too. It's time to get historical.

Great episode guys! I really love using the patreon audio system for ease of use, but I gave issue with the episode periodically stopping. And when I press play it starts from the beginning. I could just download, but I'm curious if anyone else has this issue or if it's my service on my phone. Once again great ep! Love hearing Dagan talk more over the seasons! He really is a great podcaster now. Cheers!

LastStandMedia

Hey Ryan, Have you experienced this issue before? Is it anything you could have been doing on your end? Let me know, 'cause if there's an issue, I'd be happy to escalate it to Patreon's engineering team. Thanks for listening!

Lucas Gremista

By the way, I have to be one of the 6 fans here that says... I actually enjoyed Crystal Skull :)

Ryan and Lucas (and anyone else experiencing similar problems): Patreon got back to me, and they're curious if you could answer the following questions. So as to not clutter up this thread, I ask that you respond to this posting, and not the thread itself. - What episode did this happen to? - When did they pause? (timestamp) - Did they leave the player for a time, switch to a new app, and then come back? (Listening flow) - What device type are they using? - What app version are they using?

Lucas Gremista

- All of them - Random times - I usually turn off the screen and listen. The issue happens after a while after screen is off - Android, shitty Samsung Galaxy J7 - Version 3.6.4 (was updating apps overnight automatically though, may be new)

Man I gotta rewatch these. It must be 15 years since I’ve seen them.

Will Caldwell

Apologies if this is a dumb question, was their a way to listen to these episodes through podcast services early or just limited to patreon initially?

LastStandMedia

Yeah, they go through podcast services a week after they launch here on Patreon. (You can also use the Patreon RSS feed to get them via third party app.)

Ah, creativity and originality. #ayearwithoutsequels (Love this idea, wish they’d do it)

LastStandMedia

I would also love a year where no new games came out, so that people are forced to play what already exists. Not economically viable, but an idea nonetheless. =)

Colin, I see where you’re coming from with your frustration of Hollywood constantly “going back to the well”. I actually agree, but please believe me when I say that the new Blade Runner is phenomenal. The director of “Arrival” made it and I actually think it’s better than the original. I really think you’d like it.

Benjamin

Loved this episode. The Von Trapp reference and singing were hilarious.

Peter Campbell

Enjoyed the episode. Agree on the the first two are the best. Recently showed my nephew raiders, and he was amazed by it. Didn't want to tell him that after the first two, in some ways its kind of all over. Definately agree with you that there are way too many sequels/remakes, and how it takes away from the thrill of the new. It gets pretty dull. I do think Marvel are the best at it as they seem easily bored and try to avoid repetition film to film, which is why they are so successful. But they are that anomoly. Even with the same people involved, moving the magic of one film to the next is nearly impossible. The ones that work always try something new. That's why its amazing we got two great indy films rather than one. But new properties are more difficult and prone to failure so people take the lazy option. Its always been that way with fiction, in chasing the hit. I don't see it changing anytime soon.

Made me laugh too. Good thing Dana wasn’t with you or you would have heard her entire rendition of songs like... The sound of music ’ . That would have been awesome! 😉❤️😂

BettyAnn Moriarty

Oh I loved this! I think we may have taken you to all the movies when they came out. Because I remember seeing them all- and further, we never seemed to see a movie without you guys coming along. Eg Star Wars, Indiana Jones.) the other Inappropriate 🎥 you saw - I made sure you saw them at the house. 😐🙄😬 Oh boy... 😘😘

LastStandMedia

Marvel seems to be immune to market forces, but I truly believe it can't last forever. What's more staggering to me is how quickly the market seems to be turning on Star Wars.

@ that rant at the end. I agree in principle, I do think that many IPs are being milked into soulless husks, but I also think you're being a little reductive, especially with MCU. Implying that Disney is risk-averse with the Marvel movies seems a little misguided to me. They keep putting complete and utter C-, if not D-listers (that 99% of moviegoers have never heard of but still end up falling in love with) into the spotlight and breathing life into them, when even A-listers are barely earning their paycheck in the actual comics. Marvel has decades of fantastic creativity in its backlog and if it wasn’t for these movies, it would all just die a slow death. Most importantly though, people working on the movies obviously care deeply about the source material, there is a capable producer steering the ship, and most of those movies actually do have a soul, imo, unlike – say – Transformers. Drawing comparisons between Michael Bay and Kevin Feige is *definitely* reductive. I honestly believe that MCU still has a good couple of years ahead of itself before it gets tiresome to the masses – and even then they could just shift gears.

LastStandMedia

I think you're missing my point: They're doing it for the love of coin, not for the love of storytelling, or world-building, or character development. They are a business. I don't begrudge them their choices. But that people act like they're doing Marvel this huge favor is so strange to me. Disney is running everything into the ground, and time will be up one way or another, at some time in the future.

Ok I haven't yet finished listening to this podcast but I wanna get this out before I forget lol. So I think The Temple of Doom doesn't get the credit it deserves for two large reasons. The first is due to how the general american populace felt about the bible and just general faith at that time in the 80's. Religion played are far bigger role in American culture back them. I can remember as a kid my mom and my friends parents didn't like The Temple of Doom because yes it was dark, but more so that the darkness revolved around basically as they saw the occult, and witchcraft. Something completely the opposite of Raiders, which they felt and hoped would continue to be this somewhat christian, or even Jewish, fun and uplifting religious adventure. They had no problem with the violence including the face melting in Raiders because it was somewhat righteous, or in the end a judgement from god against the evil Nazis. However the Temple of Doom was the flip. It was pretty much demonic in their eyes. To make matters worse it was way more oriented toward children. As a kid I loved Doom because it had a kid sidekick I could relate to whom was facing off against evil kids. Add to that there was a child king. "OMG how COOL would it to be the KING right now!!!" I thought. My mom and other parents hated Doom for pulling kids into this occult themed movie. I think with this, this is why they went back to a bible themed storyline in The Last Crusade. But that was divisive due to Jews not liking the Jesus Christ focused grail, and christians hating the use of Yahweh in it. But I digress. Anyways, yeah that is my thoughts and memory on it. Btw, if they wanna continue the Indy movies, it should follow an adult short round. Indys true protege.

Shout-out to Dagan for giving Anime the respect it deserves! I can't wait to hear you guys talk about Attack on Titan. Season 3 next month! I think Dagan at least would really like My Hero Academia, I'd like to hear what he thinks of it. Also Colin, you should give Blade Runner 2049 a chance, I really enjoyed it and thought it felt very true to the original (just my opinion).

Patrick A Crone

It’s funny that one of the issues you had with Last Crusade was how all of Indy’s origins are crammed into the opening with River Phoenix. It was one of the things that ruined Solo for me. Within a week’s time, Han met Chewie, met Lando, made the Kessell Run and won the Falcon in a card game. Why set up the film for a sequel if you’re going to cover everything in one movie?

Jonathan Broussard

"It belongs in a museum!" Great podcast as always guys. I have to agree with Colin Temple of Doom was my favorite, easily. Last Crusade was a close second but mainly due to Sean Connery.

Eric S

I have to say really enjoyed this episode guys. Indiana Jones holds a special place for me. I liked Dagan’s ideas for the next Indy project or film a Pixar animated film would be awesome. I have been hoping that it will be a good pass the torch movie where an aged Harrison Ford as Indiana passes the torch to the next figure who will carry the franchise on into the future and that character for me would be played by Chris Pratt. I really think he could embody the role well.

LastStandMedia

We will get to Attack on Titan as soon as the show/manga ends, I promise. Dagan is super keen to do it, but we won't touch anything that's not done yet.

LastStandMedia

Thank you! I like Dagan's idea, too. There's a lot of cool stuff to explore in that universe apart from the limited ways in which they've done so far.

Great Episode.. you say about TLC that they dont find the Holy Grail... Doesnt the Holy Grail ultimately HEAL Henry.. a nitpick maybe. Also LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE the ending discussion about the rehash mentality... 100% truth!
