Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon Review -- CLS Side Quest

Konami doesn’t care about Castlevania, but former franchise producer and writer Koji Igarashi sure does. With Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon -- the prelude to the Metroidvania Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night launching later this year -- IGA and the team at Inti Creates deliver an 8-bit Castlevania clone in the spirit of Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse. And by in the spirit of, I mean it’s basically Castlevania III. Which is awesome. (I was provided a Switch copy of Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon by Inti Creates right around launch; however, I primarily played a PS4 copy of the game I purchased. Additionally, I have a working relationship with Koji Igarashi and the staff at Inti Creates; I hosted the livestream that revealed the game, and I was privy to the game's existence and IGA's and Inti Creates' plans before they were made public.) IGA is amazing

Erik Peterson

Whoa had no idea this came out. Christmas in May for Colin?

Marc Boggio

I picked it up on Steam, then found out it was on Switch, so I double dipped for portability 😂 My fault for not doing my research, but considering I didn’t back the main game’s Kickstarter (after Mighty No. 9 I decided “never again”), I guess Iga got some sheckles out of me anyway. Admittedly it does feel better to pay money for a good product, then it does to pay money for a future product that may not be good.

Unlike Inafune with Mighty No. 9, most indications are Bloodstained is gonna pan out. So why not give the man his due?

Currently playing Curse of the Moon and absolutely loving it. It always strikes me when you say how these games aren't extremely difficult to experienced Castlevania players, because I've been playing Castelvania since I was 4 (in 1994) and apparently I'm still dog shit, hahaha. This episode was excellent, Colin. And I'm really hoping that your reach does this game some favors. None of my friends even knew it existed.

BettyAnn Moriarty

I lI’ve listening to you. Always. But when you speak of games, they make sense, even to me - admitting the worst video game player of all time. Bring back frogger , would ya?! 😉❤️

Marius Skarsem Pedersen

This is really cool! The game sounds fantastic. And, the game basically being Castlevania is ok, since we’re not getting those games for some unknown reason. Maybe if this, and the full Bloodstained does really well, we’ll get another Castlevania, but I won’t hold my breath for that.

Anthony Stewart

holy shit didnt know this was coming out. Just bought it!!!!

Kc Wright

Curse of the Moon is fantastic got it for Vita and Ps4 might also buy it for Switch

Thanks, ma! INTERESTINGLY, you bought me Castlevania III after one of Dana's indoor soccer games. You came home with it (Dagan was watching me), and when I saw it from afar, I was afraid you bought Track and Field (all of Konami's games had the same silver outline on the box). But I was wrong. And Dagan and I fell in love with a new game! So, thanks! <3

I wonder what Konami will do, what with the popularity of Curse of the Moon and the inevitable upcoming popularity of Ritual of the Night. Surely they realize that they're sitting on something potentially big, so long as they assemble the proper team...

Buying now. Thanks!

Owen

So as someone who sucked at Castlevania as a kid. Is this one a little more accessible difficulty wise?

jbakes25

Makes me want more Castlevania games and Simon Belmont in the new Smash Bros game. Also excited for season 2 of the anime. Glad you gave this game a spotlight Colin.

There were so few reviews for it, and so little coverage, that I figured I need to do my part, since I like it so much. =)

Peter Campbell

Enjoyed the review, and have passed it onto a friend who is a big castlevania fan.. This is a game I probably will buy, and then fail horribly at.

Keith A. Lewis

Awesome to hear you like it. I just wish I could actually play it as backers on for console versions still haven't received our codes. :(

Phillip Guglielmo

Wow, I had no idea this was such a love letter to Castlevania III! Thanks so much for shining some light on this game - I have $15 just sitting in my Switch e-shop that I was going to put towards Octopath, but I'm about to go buy this now. I hope to see more Side Quests reviews on little gems like this!

Brent Lindquist

I’ve beaten two stages, and I’m loving this game. Watching your review video, however, is a nice reminder that I need to finally play the Castlevania games. Also, I picked up Curse of the Moon on my 3DS, and I think it’s rad that they released it on 3DS despite having no plans to bring Ritual of the Night to the system.

Brock Thomas Walsh

Excellent review. Will be grabbing for my Switch this week

Bobby Bell

Awesome review dude. I'm glad you put this on my radar. I will be getting it as soon as I'm done typing this complimentary comment :)

I really appreciate the direct comparisons. I would not have known these things myself, having never played Castlevania III

Alexander Dean

I don’t know how you’re claiming this game to be easy. I can’t get past the 2nd boss.

Andrew Tamagni

Class game and love the review and comparisons...personally my GOTY so far! Just beaten it and going back in for the nightmare and ultimate runs. Loads of people will disagree, but this places ahead of God of War and the Shadow of the Colossus remaster in 2018. Curse of the Moon is so pure in it's execution and focus. To those saying it's hard, it's just a game you have to be patient with and the secondary weapon placements are nearly always well placed to help you tackle the upcoming sections...just take your time and prepare and it becomes pretty straight forward. Maybe it's because I'm also on a bit of a retro trip right now after playing a few NES (Mega Man 2 and The Legend of Zelda...both great too) games given I started out on the SNES...next up though is Symphony of the Night on my trip down memory lane. Never played it...can't wait and also more interested in Ritual of the Night after this! Just wish there was more time for games...I want to play Hollow Knight when it hits Switch, Mega Man 11, The Messenger and also see how the last Shovel Knight campaign plays out.

Good review bud! I snagged SotN a few years ago after you talked about it but it’s like 2d blood borne for me. It’s slow, you need to be methodical, patient and I just keep dying repeatedly so it’s not exactly fun for me. Just got an SNES classic so maybe Castlevania with that rewind “cheating” can be a good place to start? I want in on Castlevania but I truly suck at it.

LastStandMedia

You're in for a treat. I wanna play Hollow Knight, but I don't think it's on PS4 yet. As for Curse of the Moon, it's my GotY runner up to Detroit.

LastStandMedia

I don't find it Bloodborne hard, BUT I'd argue that my "talent" as a gamer is 2D sidescrollers, so I think I just bring a different skillset there. Super Castlevania IV on SNES isn't a great place to start. All three NES Castlevanias are better. If you have access to NES Classic, I'd try the original Castlevania.
