The buzz around cryptocurrency is growing louder with each passing day, which is incredible since the buzz has been audible for awhile now. But it's a confusing and unusual world, one I don't quite understand. So I invited Reilly Smith onto the show to explain his craft to me. Mr. Smith works for LBRY, a crypto company with an interesting directive. I think you'll learn a lot listening to this episode of Fireside Chats. I sure did.

When I first saw this episode I thought, "Oh no, another person trying to get me to invest in cryptocurrency." But your discussion with Reilly made cryptocurrency sound enticing for the first time. I found the discussion fascinating and even paused the episode halfway through to make my first cryptocurrency purchase. Whether I lose the money, or it turns into millions of dollars decades from now, thanks for a great episode! :)

Great episode. I would greatly encourage downloading coinbase app on your phone. I have been using it for a bit now. (bought LTC at 130). It really is easy to use.

Thank you! I'm attempted to make a purchase, too, but I need a little more time to think about it. =) Glad the show resonated!

Thank you! Yeah, I have much to learn about all of this. Need to continue to wrap my head around all of it.

It's a bird! No, it's a plane! No, it's... cryptocurrency! Hahahahaha! Hur? I don't think I understood half of the discussion in this episode...but at least I'm getting excited.

Someone I know very well just got into bitcoin - on a small scale - recently. It’s a lot daunting to me. Actually, it scares me to death because I truly don’t understand it. This helped to begin to explain things. Reilly seems to know what he’s talking about. But, like you, Col, I’m not a gambler. I like to know where my money lies. If this is the wave of the future, I better start wrapping my head around it. 🤔😬

I think a common misconception is that it is confusing to start and/or that it takes a substantial initial investment to start. As someone who just invested for the first time yesterday due to this podcast, I was astonished to discover that Coinbase is as easy to sign up for and start using as any modern web site and that you can make a very small investment. I always assumed that one was required to purchase whole bitcoins meaning that the initial investment required would be around $10k. But I discovered you can buy fractions of a bitcoin meaning if you want to just dip your toe in to see how it works you could purchase $100 or even $10 worth of bitcoin. Quite a small barrier to entry if you just want to check it out and see if it's something that would interest you further.

Hitting the play button right now, going in knowing nearly nothing of what cryptocurrency actually is or how it works. Can't wait.

BTC/USD -9.58% 8,280.00 USD this is crazy price influx.

All I can say is that I certainly understand things a lot better now than I did a few weeks ago!

I think it's the Blockchain -- and not necessarily Bitcoin itself -- that people really need to start understanding. Because that's the secret ingredient.

LastStandMedia

This is what scares me. I guess I can afford to take a risk, but I dunno. Still trying to get comfortable with the whole idea.

I'm not too proud to admit that I can't wrap my head around any of this.

Alex Gates

I'm right there with ya, Jeff... I tried to take it in but nope... In one ear and out the other. Haha.

Greatly informative and entertaining episode! It was cool hearing your guest using the network topology layers termonology to describe the cryptocurrency technology. Also, the email analogy is very apt-- I remember the chaos of upper and lower case letters in email addresses. :)

First Tiana Lowe, now this episode. Colin you are knocking it out of the park. Keep rolling!
