Oprah For President Is a Bad Idea -- Colin's Last Stand (Episode 60)

Oprah Winfrey is a smart, savvy, successful woman. That doesn’t mean she should be President of the United States, though. Haven’t we learned anything? Anything at all?! Why can't America have nice things again?

Owen

Out of curiosity, what do you think about the idea of Mark Cuban running as an independent in 2020? - completely agree that the idea of Oprah in 2020 is a not a good idea.

LastStandMedia

I'm doing my best to keep my scripts on-topic and not let them stray too much, but I was going to touch on this and decided not to. I have no issue with rich, famous people running independent. It's really when they get involved in the party apparatus that I take issue, because it's breaking the system down.

Owen

I figured as much, which is why I asked as a follow-up question. I agree. Especially because Trump is not a Republican... he's also not a Democrat. He just is...

Bravo you articulate bastard. Loved it and could not agree more. Also that photo of Hillary was perfect lol.

Peter Campbell

Liked the video. Another celebrity president seems like not learning from your mistake. I was surprised when you looked at celebrity presidents that Reagan was never brought up. He was the "actor" president and had jokes made about his senility. While different in many ways from Trump (and with long-standing political experience) he was one of those presidents that was mocked by many as a joke at the expense of the office. Obviously that was a politically-motivated caricature but the joke travelled far around the world, with the "Bedtime for bozo" jokes. I hope the Oprah thing is over in a few weeks. America desperately needs a serious opponent.

BettyAnn Moriarty

As always, you articulately bring to light many salient points that we, as a nation, really need to seriously think about. God help us if we keep going down 'this path'. Thank you, bud. Loved this episode. 😉😘❤️

I agree. Our reverence for celebrities is ridiculous. Reality shows being so popular shows that there is something fundamentally wrong. Your comment about the two of them being different sides of the same coin is basically the sum of what I was feeling on Monday.

LastStandMedia

Reagan came to mind -- as it's a somewhat literal comparison -- but it didn't resonate with me, because before he became president, he was Governor of California, and ran against Ford in the '76 primary and lost. So, he wasn't really new to all of it.

LastStandMedia

I'm glad I could encapsulate your thoughts! It seems like an apt comparison to me, too.

Smokey Joh

Im not American so I have no horse in the race, so to speak, but I do know common sense when I see it and this is on the money. Less about who is popular at the moment and more about who is the most qualified for the position. Less about how every individual is feeling and more about the educated using facts to govern. That's just my 2c.

LiquidEnder

I agree wholeheartedly Colin.

James Galos

What do you think of a politician taking on a celebrity as a VP? It can be a mostly powerless position depending on how the administration chooses to use the VP. Low info voters seem to rule the day and I don’t see that trend changing with social media killing real conversation.

Eric S

Can’t agree with you any more on this subject Colin. Oprah is a great media mogul and someone we can look up to for all her accomplishments but as a Presidential candidate she would not be a good choice at all at least in my opinion. I think for one great speech we are going a little overboard here.

LastStandMedia

I'm pretty cynical of the VP slot generally, but it's a good way to regionally and ideologically balance your ticket. You can't make it a distraction. Anyone who takes oxygen from the nominee is a mistake; that's what a celebrity at VP would do.

LastStandMedia

Yes! Let's give her her due for what she's accomplished, and learn from her story. But she doesn't need to be POTUS!
