When the British Burned Washington D.C. to the Ground -- Colin's Last Stand (Episode 20)

Fed up with British abuse and encroachment, the US declared war on Great Britain in 1812. Two years later, Washington D.C. was left in smoldering ruins, nearly bringing the American government to its knees. You really made history come alive in this video Colin. I love the narrative of Dolly Madison set against the significant historic event. Great video!

Another super fascinating tale, I really enjoy the focus on these particular events. I was particularly hooked with the stories about Dolly Madison and James Monroe. On a more technical note, I find the camera positioning a bit odd. Usually (at least for me) it's always better when you can't see the legs and especially the crotch area. I guess "unprofessional" is the best way I can describe it, not that I want the show to be too serious or anything but I think it would look better and more polished with a different camera postioning (maybe raising the camera and/or the angle could do it). Apart from this I'm enjoying CLS even more than I expected, keep it up!

Joey Finelli

I would love to see a Korean War piece when you have time.

Wait there's a real Brit named Rear Admiral George CockBurn. You can't make this stuff up. Great Episode!

Brad Russell [Toukz]

Khalil Sadi

Ah, history. I love thee. My dad grew up in Tecumseh, Ontario. Interesting to know what the name actually means and who it was named after.

George Newton

Colin I love all your videos my man but this one and all your history videos are top notch , more we cry more !!!! So many details within this that I never knew about fantastic , thank you

Yeah, BOI! I am glad we are still friends after all the bloodshed and fighting.

Owen

I know this has nothing to do with this, but when you said we're gonna go back to the year 1814 - makes me think of the song "Battle of New Orleans" - In 1814 we took a little trip, Along with Colonel Jackson down the mighty Mississippi We took a little bacon and we took a little beans And we caught the bloody British in the town of New Orleans" - I digress --- Really love when we talk a little war related history. Since we're discussing wars that aren't as spoken of as often, have you considered doing anything on Teddy and the Spanish American war?

Owen

and 2 hours later the song is still stuck in my head.

The shot looks great Colin!

Cory Fowler

With the exception of the moon base episode, this was my favorite video yet!

John Quinn

I enjoy all the videos, but history ones like this, the moon base one, and the nixon one are my favorites. They've really gotten me back into learning about history, which I really enjoy. Thanks Colin.

Josh Squires

Loved this episode Colin! The War of 1812, though a more niche corner of American history, holds a special place for me as I consider a report I wrote on the subject back in elementary school, to be the origin of my love of history. Some of these more intimate stories really help to bring this event into perspective.

Ivan Greenspan

I enjoy how you often highlight the pride and courage of various individuals . Human beings can be awful and it easier to talk about the negatives, thanks for highlighting the cool people in history while providing some of the dirty reality.

The speaking style and flow of this episode was very good. It was really showing that you were enjoying yourself with a subject you knew well. History do indeed rock !

I can't fathom how much these stolen items would go for in an auction today,

Hey Colin -- I've been a District resident for 13 years now. We proudly fly the D.C. flag outside our home. Really appreciated this video highlighting a lesser known tale in our nation's history. Come visit again soon!

Josh in Tampa

Great episode about a hugely interesting point in history. Thanks Colin

Anthony Wright

Thunderstorm that Saved D.C. (part of The Weather Channel program) During the War of 1812 British troops occupy Washington DC after defeating an American army on the outskirts of the capitol. As night falls the invading troops destroy the seat of American Government. The Capitol, Treasury and White House are all set alight. But the occupation is short-lived. The following day a violent thunderstorm hits the city. It spawns a deadly tornado that destroys buildings spared by the British. But the storm also helps save the city; it prevents British troops from wreaking further havoc and the accompanying torrential rain helps douse the flames. Thirty British troops are killed in the storm and once the storm has passed the British quietly retreat from the city. Washington is saved by its weather. Historians Dr Ralph Eshelman and James Kochan recount the event and Meteorologist Eric Fisher demonstrates the awesome power of a tornado using an air cannon and high speed video. https://weather.com/tv/shows/weather-that-changed-the-world/news/wtctw-episodes-20130517

First, as a Canadian, sorry about the White House eh! But just a small clarification, Toronto (then York) was in *Upper* Canada, not Lower Canada. I know it's counterintuitive because "lower" connotes south, but it's a named for being further up (Upper) the St. Lawrence River to the colonists coming over from Europe. Keep up the good work!

LastStandMedia

Everything is a work in progress! The camera is where it is because I'm struggling mightily to get it to focus properly from any other distance or angle.

LastStandMedia

Maybe one day! Would love to give it a little distance from the North Korea video I did before I left San Francisco, at the very least.

LastStandMedia

That's great to hear. I'll keep the history episodes coming as much as I can! Got one brewing as we speak.

LastStandMedia

I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I've long been fascinated by the War of 1812. It's such a strange conflict.

Anthony Wright

I am all over trying to figure out how to message you personally and we will do that!

Thanks for the show. Patreon supporter. I was just thinking two great failures of the american economy is high priced health insurance and people willing to work but not enough jobs available. Is there a solution in my life time - age 40 - 50. Regardless love the show - #colin was right
