Bungie Magic, But Low on MP | Sacred Symbols+, Episode 398

While Sony's $3.6 billion purchase of renowned developer Bungie was contentious in some corners from the get-go (including here on Sacred Symbols), it's also true that the deal came loaded with a ton of potential. But only two years later, it's become increasingly obvious that Sony, well, got got. With a significantly lowered headcount, cancelled projects, a spin-out incubation team, lost personnel to SIE, and more, there's a lot to go through above and beyond what we'd ever cover on Sacred Symbols proper. Thus, I (Colin) convened three Bungie Enjoyers from our ranks -- Chris Ray Gun, as well as Punching Up's Gene Park and Summon Sign's Brad Ellis -- to help me get into the weeds. Will Marathon succeed? Could Destiny 2 survive? Should Pete Parsons go? Was Destiny spin-off Payback a good idea? Does Project Gummybears have a shot as a first party title? Is there even such a thing as "Bungie Magic" anymore?

It's crazy to me that Microsoft looked into buying Bungie before Sony did, and their accountants red-flagged the studio's high cash burn rate, so Microsoft passed. Are Sony's accountants that much worse than Microsoft's and if not, was Sony management just blinded by the idea of having a big-name Live Service studio under their umbrella?

I think it's the latter that you mentioned. Bad move by Sony, short sighted in its attempt to kick start their GaaS initiatives

Don’t have anything substantial to say about Bungie but I had to share that I had 2 kids (18 & 19) show up and talk to me, while I was in the car listening, wanting to share the word of God. Halo developers + God’s children = Irony * this isn’t any kind of disrespect on religion, so don’t jump at me. I just thought the timing was uncanny. 😃

Also, look at you Chris, bulking up like a MFer. Keep it up! I’ve found that the healthier I am the happier I am. Exercise can definitely suck but it is also quite therapeutic.

Mat Piscatella revealed some interesting things on twitter today. The Last of Us Factions (PS4) is #81 on PSN most active games for the week ending Aug 3rd! Not bad for a 10 year old community! Compared to Part 1 (PS5) being 170! Also, Concord was "Top #30" (so in upper 20s), No Man Sky at #50 and Rivals was #20! Interesting stuff! Seems as long as you're top 100 you'll never have to worry about matchmaking!

Factions was so good. I jumped back on for the 1st time in years like 6months ago or so, no prob finding a match. I wish they would have just did factions 2.0, with TLOU2's engine, new maps, modes. Much less ambitious compared to the cancelled one, but it would have obv done well, since there's a resurgance in the OG. Here's to hoping a new factions in being discussed as a standalone, or with the eventual TLOU3

I actually was thankful for Colin's remark about the cars and 2m dollars. Finally, a word of sense. While I unsubscribed from Second Wind after they titled their content just with that headline. That some communist shit, telling people what they should and not should with the money someone paid him or his company made.

Haha Gene doesn't know how IT/gamedev companies work. Fruit Tuesdays. Pizza Fridays. Free lunch money. Dude. It was so funny how you guys have no idea how tech companies work :D
