Beware Evil Villain Xbox... - Four Bethesda Studios SHUT DOWN! | Defining Duke, Episode 175

A nightmare year for Xbox continues. The latest chapter in this story is Xbox's shuttering of four Bethesda studios in Tango Gameworks, Arkane Austin, Roundhouse Studios, and Alpha Dog Games. The message is clear that the experimenting days of Xbox are done as the strategy deployed by its leaders continues to fail. The focus is Call Of Duty, Fallout, DOOM, and other high profile titles while the future of surrounding creative studios like Obsidian, Compulsion, Ninja Theory, and others have uncertainty beginning to cloud them. It serves as yet another powder keg moment for the brand where fan patience has run out. Is it time for the Phil Spencer era to end? How is Hi Fi Rush considered a hit yet its studio is shutdown? Why is the leash so short for teams like Arkane Austin while 343 and The Initiative can afford to waste precious resources? Is it even possible for Xbox to restore the faith at this point? You have many questions, so do we, and one thing is for sure: Xbox is still finding out the answers to all of them. Im confused as to why Cog is still so defensive and expands it to be an industry-wide issue when Microsoft is the company that has the least justification to be closing studios, particularly ones they’ve just recently bought and didn’t give a proper chance to. Yeah Sony and Embracer and EA are all doing layoffs and closures, but each of their situations are materially different, whilst also not touting the idea that the acquisitions are explicitly to assure job security and allow creativity to run free

I mean denying it’s an industry wide issue is ignorance. Companies whether mega rich or less rich all operate the same when they’re publically traded.

I just think the whole environment has evolved in the wrong way for Xbox. If game pass exists, and I can get game X on it, then it will never make Microsoft the money they want and thus it effectively signs the death warrant for that small to medium dev. In other words, if the outrage over these, and future, studio closures is real, then surely there needs to be a frank conversation about the future of game pass. Surely day and date, at least, has to go. There is no way the masses are going to pay even $50 for HellBlade if its on a subscription service. We may as well confirm Ninja Theorys closure within the next 12 months. It's all so sad because no developer wants this outcome - but it is the environment Microsoft/Xbox themselves created.

Ghost Wire was released as a one year exclusive for PS5 but the game was made before tango was baught. Not trying to be mean but we would have gotten it no matter what. Cog said would we have gotten ghostwire. I think maybe hi fi rush would not have been released. Same thing happen with deathloop.

Cogs fanboy argument is disingenuous. The bag was so big they couldn’t say no, same thing as a gun to their head. Bethesda would be better off not having been acquired. Period
