Reflecting on Final Fantasy VII Remake | Sacred Symbols+, Episode 373

It's me, Colin. This episode was originally supposed to be a KnockBack; or, I should say, I replayed FFVIIR in preparation for that particular show. And maybe I over-prepared a bit, with 10 pages of typed notes amounting to 3,900 words. But here's the thing: Dagan doesn't have time to finish the game because he picked up a new animation gig, and yet, I don't want my unnecessarily thorough preparation to go to waste. So instead of KnockBack this week, you're getting a second Sacred+ episode, and I drafted three fellow Final Fantasy nerds to assist me. As such, please welcome Summon Sign's Brad Ellis, Punching Up's Gene Park, and LSM legal analyst Rick Hoeg for a three-plus hour convo all about 2020's Final Fantasy VII Remake. I'm now finally prepared to play Rebirth! (Please note: This podcast heavily spoils the original Final Fantasy VII, Crisis Core, Dirge of Cerberus, Advent Children, and Remake itself. It DOES NOT spoil Rebirth, which I [Colin] haven't even played at the time we're recording.)

I also think playing OG FF7 absolutely ruins Remake. Seeing the events of Midgar happen in 3 hours in the OG take 20 hours in Remake. You feel every ounce of padding and it ruins the game. I fell off it, halfway through, back when it came out on PS4 and couldn’t bring myself to get through it on PS5. But this game is easily the worst critically acclaimed game I’ve ever played. Simply cause of the pacing. But so far I’m halfway through Rebirth and it’s the best PS5 game I’ve played easily.

Is there some kind of technology issue with the live audio stream for recording LSM shows lately? I’ve noticed that everyone seems to talk over each other a lot lately. It was especially bad in this.

Not sure why they couldn't name more black characters besides Barret...there is also Rude, orphanage lady and one of Corneo's arena announcers, probably more side characters or random npcs too.

Hey guys, just wanted to address Hoeg. I feel like you're right on the money and verbalized exactly how I felt about it. The Remake name suggests a different product and therefore was disappointing when I was trying to figure out what it all meant after having finished it. Even though I liked the aesthetics and gameplay while playing it, the more I think about it's deeper message, the more it bothers me. WHY did my favorite game have to be remade with this meta-commentary towards remakes attached to it? The original game already had a great theme of environmentalism. Why add another theme that distracts from the original? In a way I feel extremely jealous of people that love Resident Evil because they get what I think we should have gotten. A faithful recreating of the game they loved with new visuals. Anyway... Rant Over. Great podcast! Thanks guys.
