(Edit: It looks like everyone is still slightly confused who is going to be affected.  Research into this topic for yourself and don’t take my word as legal advice.)

For those of you who don’t know, YouTube was recently sued by the FTC and paid $170 million.  COPPA it’s called.  Because of this YouTube will (until further notice) change its rules to an extreme degree starting next year.  Any video that seems appealing to children 0-13 years old (or maybe it was 0-12), but is determined to be inappropriate for said children, will be punishable up to $42,000.  That fine is per video.

Even though my timelapse videos on Youtube are unlisted, I don’t want to take that chance.  In case I have to delete my YouTube channel by the deadline that these new rules go into effect, I recommend you save them if I can’t save them.  I will try to save them and move them to a different site, but there is a lot and I don’t have a lot of free time.  I cannot guarantee I can save all of the timelapse video.  They are ONLY hosted on YouTube.  I do not have any copies on my computer or devices.

The 2 animations I made are safe on my computer and will be uploaded to a different site.

Apparently it doesn’t matter if I age-restrict those video.  If a kid sees it on YouTube by faking their age, bypassing security or who knows what else, I can be fined up to $42,000.

While I am talking about this, consider signing the petition mentioned in the video above.  This new rule will all but destroy YouTube and set an extremely dangerous precedent for the entire internet.  If you enjoy literaly anything but it has a one or more factors that are inappropriate for kids, it will be taken off YouTube and the uploader will be fined up to $42,000 per video that violates  the many broad rules.  That means any violent video game, 99.999999% of anime, most cartoons and many other things/channels.  This will also end careers for many YouTubers if the FTC cannot be convinced to undo their decision.  Watch the video before signing the petition so that you are properly informed.  If passed, other websites may do the same thing!

This is also a heads-up to any of you (or anyone you know) who has a YouTube video or videos that may violate the new terms of service.  Did you review a model kit and use a swear word?  $42K.  Did you do a Let’s Play of Hyper Dimension Neptunia but didn’t swear?  $42K.  Do you have a flashy intro for your Call of Duty strategy tutorial like everybody does?  $42K.  Yes, having flashy graphics counts as kid-orientated content to these people.  And bright colors.  And the word “fun”, etc.

Watched the video, that is very concerning. Thanks for bringing attention to it. I will probably delete my Youtube content as well, just to be safe. Thankfully it's all up on other sites anyway.

Here is another video specifically informing animators. He says this law applies to every website, but I’m not sure how much safer you are on any other site than YouTube. Still not 100% sure how to obey this law. https://youtu.be/rMXGnqTPcCY
