I think as evolved multicelled organisms we still have some instincts from our single-celled ancestors.  It makes us aware of the micro-biological world on some level.  This picture tries to bring those subconcious thoughts onto a concious level.  We may sometimes think of and imagine the sperm we cannot see with the naked eye during a sexual act.  Making the sperm big increases the erotic factor in many ways.  It makes them more tangible.  Humans like tangibility.  We want to touch things even if we can see them.  We want to see things that are hard to see.
