After the last fight, I took a second to refit and rearm completely.
Meaning that I had one machine flown out secretly, while hopping into another.
If I can use a fresh war machine without any stress in a fight, I would. Overpowered? Busted? Terrifying? Whatever you call it, I call it being reasonably proactive when it comes to staying alive. I ran through the checks for the machine, while Ideal went ahead and settled into the new slot. His blue eye shone as he completed syncing completely with the machine.
I think he said something about loading this one up with some better sensors?
“I’ve located them.”
“Nice. Where are they?”
“The Prince and his group are readying a set of armors with the help of non-student individuals, presumably from the faction that supported his rebellion. They are arming themselves with high-power weaponry and Armors which seem more advanced than what Holfort has.”
“Take pictures and recordings. We’ll use whatever we can to get this place under our thumb.”
“More my ‘thumb’ than yours, but I suppose I have a need for a human face whilst dealing with these vermin.”
“Hey, if you can fight off all the apocalypses yourself and just leave me and my territory alone, go ahead. I’ll just help you from the back and stay safe.”
“…No, you wouldn’t. The moment I did something you dislike…”
“Yeah, tree go boom.”
“Bastard.”
Ideal grunted, and the feeds from his sensors and drones compiled on one of the screens in the piloting pod. The sight was exactly as he said, which wasn’t a problem, but the person I was looking for wasn’t present.
“Olivia’s nowhere to be seen.”
“She may be the protagonist of this story, but by your own admission she should be no match for us.”
“She shouldn’t be. There’s not enough time, but in real life things aren’t constrained by limited actions or stupid rules. She can train, she can read, and she can raid Dungeon more easily than she could in the game.” During the duel, she’d helped the Crown Prince and extended the fight past the three rounds he should’ve survived. “With the right gear, with equipment bought by the love interests instead of farming, she could be… pretty damn strong. I don’t want to have to deal with any of the debuffs or charm she could use, y’know?”
“I see. I will search more extensively for her. We need her alive, correct?”
“To stop a giant monster that can regenerate endlessly and smash massive islands with ease, yeah. The Fanoss and Holfort war too, I guess.” Holfort had some pretty good people, but most of its people were just… gross. It felt pretty disturbing and disgusting to live over her. Alzer had plenty of problems, but I was going to work on that once things calmed down here. Needed to deal with one apocalypse at a time. The whole Sacred Crest system needed to go, and some of the tree’s powers were just freaky. “Holfort and Fanoss could duke it out in my opinion, but that might lead to a lot of wars happening all over the place, and that’ll make stopping the world from ending five times in a row really, really hard.”
“Well, if all of New Humanity was just gone, then they wouldn’t be problems. War or not.”
“Yeah, let’s not become another apocalypse to pre-empt everyone else. We’ll end up getting murdered by all the protagonists, probably.”
I finished checking all the weapons and made sure that the things really were loaded with non-lethal weapons, by firing into a wall a few times, and then… took flight.
I aimed myself right at their location.
Some would say I should let them get armed and armored before jumping in, in order to give them a fair fight.
My argument is that they’re going to get their asses beat whether they were well-armed or not, so why bother?
That was my plan, at least, until I found my armored suit bouncing off a massive, golden shield that wasn’t present until I crashed into it.
Damn.
She’s got Light Bastion?
That meant that she had the Church on her side and had the staff.

Interlude: Marie
…
“Marie, Lady Redgrave and Lady Clarice are present outside. Shall I have them escorted in?”
Eh!? Why are those two over here? No. That’s a stupid question!
“Bring them in. They need to be kept safe. Leon’s already getting into lots of trouble, already!” We’d watched as Leon made his way through the Academy. Even though no one was allowed in, rumors were abounding about the Lost Item that he had and was using to overcome the current rebellion. Lots of people in Holdfort wanted to get a hold of him for loads of reasons, and lots of them were in power and could make life really, really bad. “Hurry, hurry! We need to start doing damage control yesterday!”
“Indeed, a wise choice.”
Luxion floated away, leaving me in the room with all the projections of what was going on in the Academy, and soon enough both Clarice and Angelica were here.
“What is this place—
They were dumbstruck by the multiple holographic screens and high tech from the AI, but I cut through the situation.
“We need your help! Please help! If this keeps going, Leon’s going to make both our lives hell!” I knew that he was acting like this was his last hurrah around the Academy. The problem was that he was attracting way too much attention. “At this rate, the whole world’s going to be after him and I’ll never know a day of peace in my life!”
I knew that I shouldn’t have trusted this guy! Like all guys, the moment he has something cool, he goes ahead and uses it without thinking about consequences! Sure, he’s the best boss I’ve had, but that didn’t make him different from all the other overgrown boys out there! It’s like his IQ disappears when he’s in a giant robot with lots of guns or something!
“I… I can see that. Many will take into account all that he’s done and his fame will spread across the world. These Armors are top of the line and he’s dispatching them with ease.” Angelica muttered and moved forward. She was in all white with a yellow cardigan over her shoulders. I was tempted to hand her a helmet and some protection. How could girls walk around a place like this without protection? Don’t you know how dangerous shrapnel is? “I’ll send a message to my father as soon as possible. We have a few ships above us now ready to clean things up.”
“M-my father has a few ships here, too. They don’t have many soldiers on them, but there’s lots of people with airbikes that can get there quickly.” Clarice raised up her hand and searched through the screens. It didn’t take a genius to put two and two together. “Leon! He’s okay, thank the Saint!”
Why wouldn’t he be okay? He’s in an overpowered piece of equipment straight out of the cash shop? No. The problem is that’s he’s too okay!
“Of course, he’s strong as heck! The problem is that everyone else will find out, because he’s not thinking about holding back, since we’re going to Alzer!”
That got their attention.
“Going back to Alzer?”
“Oh, of course. If he remains here, then he will be a constant thorn in the side of the of the heirs—
“Do you really think they’ll still be heirs after all that they’ve done!?” Clarice was usually calm, but now she looked downright desperate. She almost rushed towards the screen, like Leon would somehow hear her, but she stopped herself. Oh, man. Having Leon seduce these girls was a bad idea. “Why… why does he have to leave for doing the right thing?”
Lady, I know they’re crazy and messed up in the head, but they’re still the future leaders of your country, you know?
“He is looking to indebt Holfort to Alzer, or more specifically: his household. A grand action which will catapult his household well beyond their peers, given Holfort’s size and influence.” Angelica was more controlled, but I could tell her thoughts were centered around Leon. I mean, he was her knight in shining armor, so I couldn’t fault her. He’d helped her the moment she couldn’t help herself and won. “Marie has the right of it, Clarice, we need to help Leon now. Then, we can have our families send us over to Alzer for the sake of deepening ties with his household.”
Okay, I didn’t expect the villainess to go ahead and abandon Holfort, but I guess after her treatment it was inevitable.
“R-right, you’re right. We can stay with him. Um, he invited us both over, too.” From near-hysterical to blushing maiden in ten seconds flat. I forgot how crazy girls were while we’re young. I should really stay clear of these two. “Um, Marie-san, if you could order some of Leon’s soldiers to contact our people…”
“Done! Thank you both very much for your help, I’ll be sure to tell Leon that you’re both great!” That earned blushes from the two. Yes, pay attention to him and not to me. I’m just a background character he picked up. Please, keep me out of whatever’s going to happen between the three of you. I can smell the crazy. “Yes, I’ll go right away to tell the captain of the guards!”
I left them in the command room, the safest place in the island, and Luxion de-cloaked and approached me.
“Luxion, please get the message to their people right away. We have a mess to clean up. A very big mess.”
“Indeed.”
I let loose a sigh of relief.
At the very least, I could rely on Luxion’s help, while Ideal and Leon went off and used way, way too much firepower to solve problems.
You two could at least fake the damage on your armor, y’know!?
…
“I’ve always wanted to fire upon the New Humans from orbit.”
“Please, keep your inner thoughts to yourself. And you’re sure that it’s going to be invisible?”
“Their sensors are garbage. They won’t have the ability to detect this attack.”
“Good, we don’t want any more attention than we already have.” All the damage I did was ‘just’ on the level of an extremely skilled person in an incredible piece of lost technology. A noteworthy person in history. A whole ship from ancient times that can bombard islands higher than anything else on the planet can reach? That would cause a lot of problems. “In-game, the shield can be chunked down with AoE attacks, so this is our best bet.”
“Firing.”
“W-wait, I’m out of the blast zone, ri—
The only sigh of Ideal’s attack was the skies parting above us. He told me that this was a way of creating a vacuum for laser beams and other energized attacks to go through while in-atmosphere. It was ‘just’ a heat beam that was meant to preclude a real weapon, and also create a channel for the real attack to travel through.
Still, when overcharged, it worked as a powerful in-atmosphere heat ray with a large radius.
Nothing that can harm even Knight Armors of the kingdom, let alone armored ships, even when overcharged.
However, against an energy barrier that needed to be maintained… it was an invisible, constant hammer that Ideal and I were using to circumvent the Protagonist’s powerful defenses.
I mean, I tried waiting it out first, but it seemed like it was going to last more than a couple of turns.
So, well.
Orbital strikes with a weapon that wasn’t going to burn up the whole Academy was my answer.
I couldn’t see it, since it was just invisible thermal energy pounding into the golden dome, but the effects were pretty quick. Plants shriveled up and died all around the dome. Paint peeled and began to sweat. Some dry pieces of twigs and leaves here and there came alight. From the readings in my machine, the temperature was steady and vaporizing air constantly. A person could die in a few minutes in the heat, boiled alive slowly, and that was enough damage to crack the shield and break through.
After that, though, the heat stopped… and out came the love interests in their souped-up armors and with supporting armors at their back.
“Rault, I should’ve known that you were the one to come here. I knew that you’d never stop, until Olivia was yours.” Julius lead the group… and spouted off some lines that had me questioning if something was wrong with my ears. What the hell made him think that I wanted Olivia? Didn’t I literally just bust through her shields? That would’ve caused some serious fatigue. “You and your damned country things that it can take whatever it wants through force, but I’m here to prove you wrong. Holfort will never fall to Alzer.”
Someone was feeding a heaping shovelful of bullshit into the Crown Princes’ throat, and he was gobbling it up, apparently.
For a prince, this guy sure could be easily deluded.
I mean, his mental strength was such that he fell in love with the girl who slapped him the moment they met, so I guess it’s not a surprise.
“Cool story. Props to whoever fed it to you, but this is happening because your country can’t exactly put down this rebellion of yours without being shamed across the entire planet. I’m just helping out.” I readied my weapons. Shoulder-mounted, self-articulating cannons. Missile pods on the back. Built-in machine guns. Two more handheld-cannons. With the checks completed, and the targets locked on and ready to fire at with a press of a trigger, I activated the shielding. “I’ll prove it to you, too. I’m leaving for Alzer and never coming back here, ever. I don’t want to ever step a foot in this detestable country ever again.”
That… seemed to make the prince take a step back in surprise.
“W-what… no… you’re lying—
I didn’t let him finish.
It wasn’t like anyone present here would ever back me up and provide truthful testimony.
No point at all in explaining myself in them.
So, I pulled the trigger and unleashed an army’s worth of a first salvo at the gathered force.
I had no doubt that the love interests would still be standing at the end of it, but in every boss fight, you always need to deal with the adds first.
