I spent a chunk of my childhood outside the US and didn't really grow up hearing about racial stereotypes at all, so when I moved back for middle school and high-school and started hearing racist jokes I LEGITIMATELY didn't get the jokes, didn't know it was even about race and would ask people to explain. They would get so uncomfortable, then I'd be like "oh so it's just racist then? Huh, I don't get what's so funny." I didn't act offended, just as if they'd told a joke that didn't land. Even though I wasn't doing it on purpose it was so, so satisfying

Also love the “explain it to me/help me understand” approach and really don’t understand how people who say awful things then get so angry about someone else making THEM uncomfortable. Irony much?
