The World of Anime Fan Edits

Fan edits of popular films aren't exactly new. From the Star Wars Phantom Edit and Despecialized editions, fans of a work can greatly transform their experience using both basic and complex editing tools. Today, Dai-chan talks about fan edits specific to anime, ranging from removing filler from Naruto to making Deen's adaptation of Fate/Stay Night more accurate to the visual novel. This video is fair use under U.S. copyright law because it is (1) transformative in nature, the video is a journalistic commentary on popular media (2) uses no more of the original work than necessary for the video's purpose, the claimed duration is an edited clip for rhetoric, and (3) does not compete with the original work and could have no negative affect on its market. Speaking of people being shamed for basically making a version of themself in a property they really enjoy, Thumin (an artist on twitter got/ still gets) alot of racist hate over an image in which she drew herself in the world of Kiki's Delivery Service. she was accused of "blackwashing" Kiki, because apparently people thought she was making a black version of Kiki even though she had already clarified from the get go that she was doing herself and not redoing Kiki. (people then proceeded to "fix" her work by making racist caricatures of her character. I've come to become very wary of the term "fixing art" because of it. the artist did something she loved and got backlash over it and is still getting it.

Yeah, that's messed up. The only time I don't like seeing artists make "black versions" is when they personally harass artists for daring to make white versions, at least when it comes to fanart. There's a different debate to be had about racebending iconic characters for official works.
