So a quick question when it comes to elements. If mages have an affinity towards a certain element- like Luvia towards earth then does that mean they can't use any other elements or will they just have a harder time using it compared to those without said affinity?

Pretty sure they can use it, but they might have a harder time. The output might not be as great.

I think this is true. There's a notable exception - Shiro. His element AND origin both are Sword, and that oddity makes it so, as he says when invoking his reality marble at the end of UBW, "the only magic allowed to [him]." Conversely, in the UBW anime (and presumably Realta Nua), when Rin does the crest transfer, she mentions that the surgery is something Kotomine is renowned and masterful at when stating that nothing went wrong while embarrassed. Thus, either there are magics like spiritual surgery that are non-elemental in nature or mages can learn other elements (or both) with proper training.
