Movies *can* be more special than the usual TV shows. First, many of them have more budget than a TV series and can spend it on 90 to 120 minutes, instead of on 12/13 or 24 episodes, so the technical aspects (good animation, less "off" characters etc.) are much better. Also, it is of course a much denser experience. Instead of stretching a story over a whole series, with 1-3 episodes of introduction and then a whole story arc over 9-10 episodes to the climax of the story, you get all that in one movie, so you get concentrated awesomeness in one evening's watching. The disadvantage is of course that the story cannot be as detailed. I think that a well made series (say, Fate/Zero or UBW) is, for me, still better than a single movie, because I like loooong stories. But for introducing friends to anime, a good movie to watch together with them is probably the best choice. Definitely better than asking them to watch a complete series as their first anime experience and telling them "keep watching, it really gets good from episode 5 onwards!".
