Some Advice I heard when I was student. (Patreon)
Content
Recently, I got some questions about artistic advice from art student.
I could't give direct advice about someone's painting,
because never have been teach someone and don't have good teaching skill /interested about it. (Doing something well and Explaining it well is clearly a different skill.)
Instead, I'll share my experience here.
Ten years ago, when I was 20s, I was a very passionate student.
I used to went to a presentation of famous and successful Korean artist from hollywood.
Also visited a professor at another university.
I carried my portfolio around and asked them for personal advice.
Now that I look back,
I feel super sorry for bothering them so much 😂
Anyway,
I have a common tip from them,
In fact, it is simple information that can be easily found anywhere on the Internet.
But if I saw this information just on the social media..
I guess I'll just click the "like" button and forget it forever.
But I could keep it in mind, because I personally spent a lot of time and money to get this information😆
1. How to make good portfolio
Many picture is useless.
There should be four very high-quality, original paintings that will catch the client at a glance and place them on the first page.
2. How to draw well?
Just draw a lot.
3. How to develop originality?
Keep study a lot.
4. How to get succeed carrier?
To do very well than others is the basic principle.
You should always be prepared to catch the chance.
Other than that, it depends on luck.
It's really simple, isn't it?
As you know, I don't have a successful commercial career or draw very well, so it's not my story at all.
But I think this is the secret of the well-drawners.
The technical thing is... There may be a shortcut.
A short cut for drawing the body well, for example, is to understand the structure of bones and muscles.
However, to do it naturally, you have to draw a lot.
So, Actually there is no shortcut Indeed.
It's just have to work hard and DRAW A LOT.
Here's another advice about art teq.
There was a famous artist who had the very good human drawing technique in here. He published many tutorial book.
When I met him, I showed my portfolio,
I once asked a question about how to draw so well.
And he said this.
"I have no characteristics other than good drawing.
But drawing better and better is meaningless.
As time goes by, there are more and more people who draw..
My price is getting higher and higher, and young and cheap price but well-draw artist will overtake me.
Maybe there is no more good job for me in the future, and now I am thinking about how to survive.
You have at least a favorite art theme and purpose to draw. I envy this.
To get a job, you have to be able to draw everything you want or not. But keep remembering what you like, and keep it well as an artist."
Others said this.
"You're too young to know the reality.
Technic, Talent is nothing. Working for a big company is not that happy thing that you think.
How long does you can survive in this place with your art, that's all."
I remember this for a long time because it was shocking.
I didn't fully understand it at the time.
As time goes by, I can understand more..
I post the WIP, I hope you guys watch it just for fun.
It maybe can technical reference, but I also want to show you the thinking process of why I drew this picture rather than technique.
So there are many repetitive, maybe not helpful abstract stories.😅
I also wrote down the questions I sometimes get.
1. How can I find something I like?
Hey, there's no one else who can find what you like instead of you!
To be honest, I hope you like Corydoras catfish the best in the world, but that fish's nice beard may not be your cup of tea.
There must be a lot of things you like already.
Keep thinking!
2. How do I keep drawing?
It's like waking up and going to the bathroom before going to bed
It's like locking the door when you back home.
Make it as your habit.
So, we are bound to do this without questioning why we usually do this.
Like breathing, Painting and studying will become natural.
This is how successful national athletes think of their practice.
This is just a personal opinion from my experience.
There is a lot of other information in the world.
Someone's advice may not be best for everyone.
Please consult the opinions of many people. Don't trust one person's opinion 100%. Keep doubting it.
Did you know that Patreon recently had a post-searching function?
So if you search keywords, you can see what I wrote in the past.
Thank you!
