I felt a little depressed that the people at the bomb shelter did not trust me enough to follow me, but there was nothing I could do about that. Maybe after delivering food a few times, these people will change their minds.

I found a shady spot to sit down against a tree that had seen better days as I looked up at the hazy sky. I pulled out a com that connected to the one person I wanted to speak to at all times. “Jen….”

“Ai? Ai, what’s wrong?” Jen’s voice filled my ears making me smile. “Just slightly depressed is all. This world. Our world. Is ruined. I do not know what it will look like in the future but if things go on like this the world itself will not be able to take it.”

“I know… But if we strive for it, we may be able to see what is to come.” Jen replied, her voice soft.

“I hope we can live that long. I myself only lived for ten years. In another few years, the second wave will hit. Robots the size of buildings will roam the streets and wipe out any army that tries to fight them. We have to be ready for everything. The weather is also not something that is helping humanity.

“Unlike my past life, we will not be able to find food easily once we run out. If I had not made preparations we would not be able to continue sustaining ourselves. I have seen maybe three animals since I have been roaming around and each one looked starved. Jen, we have to do more. We have to figure out a method to allow our bodies to adapt better. I think we will need to start looking at genetic enhancement. One where we can use the air to fuel our bodies for a few days at a time without food or water to cut down on consumption and still not starve ourselves.

“We humans need to evolve and quickly or we will all die out at this rate. When the cold hits after the heat, the lives of us humans will once more be put to the test. I am afraid for our future.” I truly was. The future of humans was bleak. It was much worse than before. Even the military could not hold out for too long if things kept going like this.

Previously we had a few human bases that housed many people and had a large perimeter but now… how could they make such bases? This heat would stop anyone from being able to stay above ground. Just walking in the sun would burn one’s skin and cook them alive. To sustain a base that had cooling would take a lot of electricity and an infinite source would not be found for a few more years only I have such a generator.

“Ai, you can not hold the world on your shoulders. You are already doing what you can. You are already doing more than anyone could ask for. Just keep doing what you can. Save those you can. Build up a place for humanity to restart in. Leave the other things to us. M0-Mom is also here listening. She said she would start working on a method to make humans need less food. Your father will work on ways to make crops produce more each harvest. We will work things out one step at a time.” Jen’s voice soothed my soul, and her cute stutter when calling my mom, mom made me smile.

“Hehe…. Then ask Mom to figure out a way for me to impregnate you.” I said teasingly.

“Sh-She said she would….” Jen’s voice was low. I could tell her face was probably beat red. But I was surprised my small joke was being taken seriously.

I stood up feeling refreshed. I now knew what I needed to do. “Jen, I love you. I will contact you again soon. I will do as you said. I will try to help who I can and leave the other worries to you all. And thank you. You helped me greatly.”

“I love you too…. Come home soon. Michell and I both miss you a lot.” Jen seemed to have taken a big liking to Michell. I might not have kids but it seemed I have adopted one without notice.

“Mmm… In a few days, I will return. At that time, I will read both of you stories.” After hearing Jen say goodbye, I closed the com and stared off into the distance. The hazy visage of a town could be seen through the dried up trees that no longer had leaves. “Let’s take a look!”

I made my way through what I am guessing used to be a park of some kind and onto the main road of a small town. The were no tall buildings here only houses and a small town center with stores. It was pretty much what could be considered a country town.

I scanned for signs of any cool spots and surprisingly found quite a few, along with many spiders as well. There was nothing like free experience, but I would prefer to store them away for the time being.

“Let’s clear the spiders first and then I will check out the cool spots. They might be storm shelters. If they are I might find some survivors.”

Kill.Me = Killian Merphy

One of the hardest obstacles I had to overcome and learn from as both a Combat and a Para-medic... was myself... You are only one person... you can't... and will never be able to... save everyone... and no matter how much care you provide... they can... and will... still die... And that's OKAY... YOU ARE ONLY ONE PERSON... YOU ARE NOT A HERO... AND THAT'S OKAY... But always remember that motto... These things I do... That others may live...
