I climbed to the top of the staircase, placed my hand on the wooden banister made of oak, and turned around. “Right father… Be sure to pay me back for the tuition fees you have paid out from my family’s expenses. I will not ask for them now but I do hope you will have a check ready by the time they graduate.”

I flashed him my best smile before turning once more and walking toward my room. I had pushed my plans forward quite a bit, but that was fine as well. I do find it highly amusing how quickly Weston Thatcher is willing to submit. He really tosses everything aside in order to reach his goal. But I now have a feeling that that bastard was cheating on my mother the entire time they were together. While the kids were born before he met her, to actually bring home that woman so quickly proved he was not the person my mother believed him to be.

“I should try to investigate her death as well…” I will need to do some tests, but I think that maybe my mother’s death was not so simple.

In a large office with walls covered in bookshelves filled to the brim with books of all kinds, two people sat on black leather couches that had a single glass coffee table in between. Just behind the couches on the far wall with the window was a polished cedar wood desk and a comfortable-looking leather chair. On the desk and plastered on the walls were images of a young girl showing a toothy smile.

The older of the two men in the room looked to be in his late thirties going on forty. He had a clean-cut hairstyle with a large scar over his right eye and a neatly shaven goatee and wore a white collared shirt with black dress pants.

The other of the two men was a younger version of the older man, wearing the same clothes. He was in his early twenties and had a crew cut with a clean-shaven face, which revealed a scar on the left side of his chin.

Both men were very handsome and had decent builds showing that they took very good care of their bodies. The thing that stood out the most was the aura that surrounded them. They had an aura that could cause a child to cry just by walking by them.

In a long hallway filled with pictures hanging up on the walls and vases with various plants potted in them sitting upon hand-crafted pedestals, a young girl with brown hair that bobbed up and down with each step had a happy smile on her face as she made her way to the end of the hall.

With a light push, the door opened, and the girl peeked in as if she was trying to be stealthy. When she saw that it was just the two men she pushed the door all the way open and ran up and hugged the younger of the two inside. “Brother!”

“Sophia! How was school?” The young man asked with a doting look in his eyes. He had always treasured this little sister of his. And it was not just him but also their father who was currently glaring at the young man.

“It was good! I hope you don’t mind but I took Ronnie and the guys out to play tag.” Sophia let her brother go before walking over and sitting on the couch, ignoring the older man who had opened his arms, awaiting his precious daughter’s embrace.

“How could I mind? Ronnie and the others should feel privileged to play tag with you.” Sophia’s brother already knew what happened but he did not call his sister out on it. As long as she was happy, that was all that mattered.

“Ah! Right, Brother!” Sophia slapped her head as she turned to her brother with a pleading look. Her lower lip pouted ever so slightly as her eyes became watery. “Can you transfer me into my new best friend’s class? I don’t want to be separated from her.”

“Of course, I can! Who would refuse to let me transfer you? There is no way anyone would reject anything you wanted.” Sophia’s brother smiled so brightly that if it was any girl besides Sophia who saw it, they would probably have screamed and passed out due to how dazzling he looked.

“Thanks Brother! I knew you were the best!” While Sophia showered her brother with praise, the older man just stared at his son as if he was his mortal enemy.

“Nicolas, it seems I might need to send you over seas for a while. You can help with some of the dealings over there.” Sophia’s father finally spoke up. He was filled with jealousy! His precious baby girl was not giving him any attention!

“Dad, don’t be jealous just because Sophia likes me more. Maybe if you didn’t put her pictures up all over your office and restrict her movements so much she would rely on you more.”

“Yeah! Brother is right!” Sophia nodded her head, agreeing with her brother. “You need to give me more freedom! I finally found someone I can be friends with so if you ruin this for me I will hate you!”

“Ha… Hate!? Sophia! How can you say you will hate daddy!? Daddy won’t do anything to ruin your friendship! Daddy will be sure to treat your new friend very well!”

“Isn’t that what you said last time!? What happened then? The girl was scared so badly by you she peed her pants and cried to her mom. She ended up changing schools!”

“That… I… she said she loved you though!” The older man, who seemed like he could kill a man with a single glare, now looked like a puppy who was just told he was bad.

“That doesn’t mean you had to threaten her! Girls say that kind of thing all the time! Its a form of friendship! Anyway, I will say this now, you dare to scare my new friend away I will never talk to you again! Humph! I am going to bed!” With that, Sophia stood up and gave her brother a hug and kiss on the cheek before sticking her tongue out at her father and running off.

As soon as she left the room was awkwardly quiet. Nicolas, Sophia’s brother, kept his head lowered. “Umm, Dad?”

“Get ready to go to Africa tomorrow. You will spend a month there making sure our supply lines are secure.” The stern tone and a look that could kill caused Nicolas to let out a sigh. He really wondered when his father would stop being such a big baby when it came to his daughter!

Nicolas did not seem to realize he was his father’s son and doted way too much on his own sister as well.
