--AN) The New Novel--

If I had one dream in life, it would be to become a great author that everyone knows about. To write a story that brings tears and smiles to those who read it. One that is remembered by all. As such, I have written my fair share of stories. It was just that… “Why are there so many negative comments!? What do you mean Shinji sounded like a robot!? How do words even sound like a robot!?”

I was once again sitting in my room staring at my phone, looking at all the bad comments being thrown at me left and right. While I might be yelling, it was nothing new. No matter the genre I try to write, whether it is fantasy, science fiction, romance, or even comedy, it always seems to flop.

Every story, every line… everything I write, I write with passion, hoping just one of my stories will one day be noticed in the sea of novels posted online every day. And every day, I sit and read the comments that tell me that I am nothing but dirt.

Most people would quit at this point. Even I wanted to quit when I first started since such words filled with hate were not something many new authors could take. Every day, I typed on my phone, trying to bring about a new chapter to a story that would hopefully catch the attention of a few people who would become my fans. While I was not the best author in the world, for me, this was all I had.

You can call me a kind of outcast. I have been this way since I was young. I rarely speak at school. It’s not because I can’t speak; it’s because I am too shy. I start to get nervous and end up lowering my head when people speak to me. If I do get any words out in response, they are normally an inaudible whisper or a jumbled mess of me stuttering away.

And since I am one not to care too much about fashion. My hair is normally in two messy pigtails, and my face is adorned with a pair of glasses. When not taking notes in class, I am normally writing in my notebook trying to come up with new plots and ideas for stories. I guess my only saving grace is my lack of presence, which allows me to stay out of sight of those who like to bully others.

Stories, for me, are what allow me to escape from the real world. I can dive into a new world where my thoughts and dreams can come true. This might be strange to those who live normal lives, but for me, this was what I loved to do the most. And as an author I can let my true fantasies come to light.

“I should go to bed…. It seems this story is another flop….” Living alone in a small apartment meant I had to manage my time correctly. I never stayed up past midnight, and I made sure to get up early enough to wash up some and grab a bite to eat from the convenience store. The convenience store is also where I get my lunch as well.

My alarm went off at its normal time. However, waking up every morning like this was a bit hard. I was not the best morning person in the world.

After forcing myself out of bed, I did my morning cleanup, which meant making my bed and quickly getting dressed. After washing my face, I grabbed my things and left the house as normal.

I lived by myself, so it was not strange that my parents were nowhere to be found. In fact, I kind of wish they would stop traveling the world since I haven’t seen them in person in two years. We still talk through video calls, but that is not the same as being there in person. Some kids my age would think that I had it made, but to me, it was kind of lonely at times.

“Today is our magic test….” I let out a small sigh. Seiryukan Gakuen, the most prestigious magic school in all of Tokyo. The school I worked so hard to get into since it was an escalator school. It even owned three dungeons that one could explore. Although, as a first year, I was unable to do such a thing. But it was a place that would allow me to get a good job if my writing ability did not improve.

Magic itself came into existence around fifty years ago. Each person is now born with the ability to use some kind of magic, whether it be one of the main elements like fire and water or a rare element like lightning; one could only use a single kind of magic. There were also special kinds of magic as well. Mine just so happened to be just that, and it was called word magic.

It is because of my magic that I am the way I am now. When I was younger, I caused all kinds of issues because I could not control my magic once it manifested. While saying one is born with the ability to use some kind of magic is true, it is also false at the same time. You have mana in your body from the day you are born. The kind of mana you have can give the baby's parents an idea of what kind of magic they will have in the future since trace elements can be found in their mana upon testing.

This was true for all elemental-type magics. But specialty magic was different. You had to wait for it to manifest, and that usually happened when a child turned five. As for me, I ended up destroying my room.

I had to wait until I could control my magic before I could go to school. It took me another five years before I was able to keep my words from casting any kind of spell. And even then I was still so nervous when at school, afraid that I would end up casting a spell by accident that I never talked.

And I guess because I never spoke much unless called upon by a teacher, I was seen as gloomy and left without friends. I spent the rest of my school years all the way to high school in this same state.

In a way, this worked out for me, who just wanted to think about my novels, so I was fine with being left alone. While I could hear the voices of those around some times saying things behind my back no one actually said anything to my face. Although I am not sure if this is a good thing or bad thing….

“That will be seven fifty.” The clerk behind the counter rattled off the same price I have heard every day this week. I paid what was due and took my bag before giving my thanks with a slight bow of my head. “Oh right…. Watanabe-san, good luck on your test.”

The woman behind the counter had become quite friendly with me since I started school. I gave her a half-hearted smile and said, “Th-Thanks…”
