Harakiri (I may have spelled that wrong) was the punishment/honorable way to die if you had committed an unforgivable act against your tribe/community. This practice of disembowelment wasn't banned until the 90s. Crazy huh? Seppuku (sp) was considered a merciful ritual to behead the person preforming harakiri. Preventing a longer, more painful death. I noticed in the movie that they fully cut the head off but, if my memory is correct, they're supposed to stop before the person is completely beheaded, which takes great skill and it was an honor to be selected to perform this ritual.

Not to take away from the movie but around 1:59:00 when Tom Cruise is getting of his horse, that horse kicks the extra next to it in the umm man parts. He was seriously injured but they kept the scene going as not many noticed the kick while shooting.

Nathan was the one that killed her husband at the beginning with the flag pole when he stabbed him under the chin before being captured. That's why the dynamic between Nathan and the Japanese woman Taka was so awkward.

SO THE SCENE WHERE UJIO HAD TO BEAT HIM SENSELESS WITH THE BAMBOO STICKS, I ONCE HEARD THAT WAS VERY MEANINGFUL, EVIDENTLY IN THEIR CULTURE, HONOR COMES FROM BEING HUMBLE AND ACCEPTING DEFEAT AS THEY KEPT ELUDING TO THROUGHOUT THE FILM... just responding to Asia @1:08, he did kill her husband. The husband was the samurai in the red armor, who said He is Mine, when the captain was surrounded by 6 warriors. The red samurai tried to stab him when he was down and the captain ran his broken spear through the red samurai's neck. So basically he killed her husband and now she is forced to take care of him and have her kids be around the man who killed her husband.

I know this is late but I’m just now getting around to it. Probably no one will see it. Just a little detail: the bamboo sticks aren’t bamboo. They’re called bokken (not shinai, which are the bamboo ones) and they are pretty heavy. They’re usually made of oak or some other dense hardwood and they HURT. Not just sting like bamboo. Swung with force they can break a bone and could probably kill a person
