Oh no, you skipped the intro! One of the best intros ever lol. The Sopranos changed the history of television. It's just as important and influential as shows like I Love Lucy, MASH, Cheers, etc. The Sopranos helped (almost) kill the sitcom format. Prior to the Sopranos, you could only see such extreme violence, sex, and other content on PPV. It blew everyone's mind at the time and opened the door for future TV shows like Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, etc. Those shows wouldn't exist without the Sopranos breaking that barrier and showing studio execs that an episodic mature TV series could be successful. HBO really made a gamble, and it paid off in a big way. Its massive success also helped HBO fund future TV shows of a similar nature. You should also know that the actress who plays Dr. Melfie in the Sopranos is also a major character in Goodfellas - one of the films you're considering next and one I highly recommend. This casting choice in the Sopranos was quite a shocker at the time. The fans of the Sopranos who enjoy mafia films loved it because they were very familiar with her from Goodfellas and loved her as an actress for her role in Goodfellas. For fans of these kinds of films, it felt like the producers of The Sopranos really "got us" in their casting choice, if that makes sense. It showed tremendous self-awareness of what they were trying to do with the Sopranos, and it was a nod of respect to previous mafia films like Goodfellas.

I love the detail in the first episode how Tony takes his side piece to that restaurant, then when he comes with his wife the waiter says “where have you been we haven’t seen you in months” lol

The Sopranos ushered in the Golden Age of Television (according to many TV critics, and I absolutely agree with them).

This one is the OG as far as cable tv series as we know them today. Sopranos is so well-made. I think you guys are going to love it. Pauly Walnuts is my favorite character, he cracks me up every time he opens his mouth.

Omg yes yes yes!!!! I’m so excited y’all reacting to GOT and now Sopranos??!!! Wow what a treat. Asia. Tony can’t let it get out that he’s seeing a therapist, having anxiety attacks and taking depression meds cuz it’s a sign of weakness and he can’t talk to ANYONE about the biz or he’s considered a rat. Either will get him killed.

I keep forgetting that. I feel like Seinfeld and Friends were the first of the network “water-cooler” shows, the ones everyone watched and would be talking about around the water cooler at work the next day. The Sopranos was definitely the first of many that took that concept to a whole other level. I think a little bit of the genius of the show might be lost on people who’ve only known TV the way it is now. But it’s still undoubtedly an excellent show.

The actor playing Paulie was a real gangster in real life.

I'm super super late to the party on this one, but I have never seen the Sopranos before, so I'm stoked to be watching it with you guys. Also, since this is my first episode, and you guys have finished the series, I'm quite sure it has been recommended that you guys take a look at the movie Analyze This. It takes the whole mob boss in therapy thing to a different level and it's super funny as well.
